- Fishing at Lake Tyers and my new Daiwa Luvias fishing reel isn't quite the same after catching a big fish on a zman slim swimz soft plastic. Might need to look at upgrading already to a daiwa luvias 2021 so get ready for some estuary fishing reel screaming action. Lake tyers is a beautiful fishing destination within east Gippsland with crystal clear waters that offers exceptional fishing for big flathead, bream, tailor, poddy mullet and a lot more. Enjoy the video and dont forget to sub the channel

Having recently moved to Paynesville, I give an even more enthusiastic applause of these recent east gippsland videos. Epic stuff Alan.
Thank you so much. Yeah I have always been super keen to hit the road and spend some time around east gippsland. Our trip unfortunately was cut short due to extremely windy weather. We were also hoping to feature, gippsland lakes, lakes entrance, hollands landing and a few spots on the way back to Melb. Im hoping we can do this again in the not to distant future and cover a few more places. Especially as the channel grows. That whole area is so nice for fishing and just so scenic.
Wow! The quality improves every video mate. Starting to grow your channel into something big! Good luck to you Alan! Awesome work!
Thanks so much Lachlan, that's a huge complement, and I really appreciate it. years of hard work slowly coming together and exciting times ahead. Thanks for the encouragement.
@@fishingmad No problem mate. Keep bringing smiles to people’s faces. Good luck and cheers!
Thank you !! Will do. ive got some content coming over the next few weeks which im sure people will enjoy. Some ripping sessions
Finally got down to lakes Tyers and fished nearly the exact stretches of water on the yaks as you fished and had the same problem with the bream spooking due to how shallow the water was and the poddy mullet were everywhere, managing to get one only. Great video 👍
Thanks !! Yeah im glad to hear it wasn't just us that struggled. The water was so clear and the bream would spook so easily. I wonder if fishing further back in slightly deeper water and not hitting the banks may have helped. How good are those poddy mullet leaping out of the water.
That's a beast of a mullet LOL bet the small bream and flatties are spooked by that thing swimming around. Wow. Great catch 👍
Thanks 👍 Yeah it sure was a beat and they were plenty of big mullet jumping out of the water so you might be right. My bet is that we were fishing the banks and shallows and the fish could easily see us. Thanks heaps for the comment !!
@@fishingmad no worries mate, great video. Hope you'll stop at port welshpool also on your way back, that's my stomping ground, if your in need of some recon I have some videos on my channel of the area 👍👍👍👍 keep up the great work!!!!!
Awesome, ill check them out 100%. We had planned to spend another 5 days around Gippsland visiting Gippy Lakes, Hollands Landing, some of the rivers and on the way back near Wilsons prom and port welshpool. We had to cut the trip early as the weather had predicted 4 days straight over 50k winds. A real shame but hoping we can do it again in a few months time
Great video again . Love you set-up. off subject why do people give dislikes ,I imagine they have nothing better to do You go to alot of trouble to entertain us ...thanks mate
Thanks 👍 Kevin, its really appreciated. I go to a lot of effort every week to get the content out so thank you for appreciating it. ill never quite understand the dislikes, but ya just get used to it.
Great catch there Alan and the PA14 was certainly in its element there. I now have the Revo13 all loaded up for a quick session tomorrow morning.
Thank you, yeah it was a beautiful spot to take the PA14. Good luck tomorrow morning on the Revo13. Where are ya headed ?
@@fishingmad Seacliff/Marino Rocks area, metro Adelaide.
Fantastic, Good luck I hope you catch a few good ones out there
@@fishingmad Thanks mate, just got back and now have to head into work. Emailed you a couple of pics. Terry
brilliant, Thanks Terry. looked like an amazing spot with the car on the beach. Very envious here stuck at work. LOL
Sorry I'm late 😂 another great video mate! Mullet of the year!
All good Vinh, always good to have ya comments on the channel. Glad you enjoyed the vid yeah that mullet was pretty epic.
My experience with reels is if a brand name reel fails there s normally a production error with that model , go for a more reasonable priced model you do not need so expensive a reel to catch a simple fish seriously. Enjoy your videos cheers . 😉👍
Great work Al, what a great fight. I saw one up the Yarra once and couldn’t get it to take anything.
Thanks !! Yeah I was amazed at how you could put a soft plastic or lure literally cms away from them and they would just avoid it, even when they were schooling up. Only way i could entice them was a slim swimz with a bit of scent, they wouldnt have a bar of anything else. So much fun though. You right there are some big ones up in the Yarra, how far up the yarra were you ?
@@fishingmad Ive only ever seen one, it was up near Burnley harbour so pretty far up. 👍
Haven't seen a decent size bull mullet in years. As a kid I use to catch them in the creek below home near Newcastle, we either caught them on worms, dough (flour and water) or when in big schools jag hooks or spear.
Thanks, yeah i too hadnt come across them for some time. Lots of fun catching the big ones. Good tip on the bait choices
Well done Alan. I would take mullet of such size any day. Tight lines.
Thanks !!! Yeah 100% tangling with any fish of that size on light gear is awesome stuff. Thanks for watching and commenting
Haha that was intense fight man, felt like I was watching my team down by a point on the last minute in footy haha
LOL, cant get much of a bigger complement then missing the footy for this. Yeah that mullet on silly string and light gear was intense. Some good games on the footy this week. So nice that some decent sport action is back on.
@@fishingmad definitely a great change from this time last year
Didn’t know that flathead would live in Lakes Great video👍😎
Yeah its fascinating catching flathead in lakes. You can see them cruising around in the shallows and there are some big ones in there too
I live in The south part of the United States, i have never seen a mullet hit a lure or even heard of anyone catching any on any type of lures.. that is wild! Heard they put up a tremendous fight.
A great video indeed and a very informative one too with few very insightful comments. I was about to buy a Luvias Airity 2000 when I came across this video and after reading the comments, I will give it a second thought and would like to see a few more review. Thanks for the input mate. On the lighter side, I really think a reel of this price and repute should have done much better with a fish of this size. It's now around 11 months.... did you get the reel serviced? If not, how is it performing? Thanks for a great video again.
New subscriber here. Great content presented in a no bull or talking ya self up manner 👌
Looking forward to upcoming sessions & will check out your past vids.
Cheers 🥳🎣🍻
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for video
Thanks for watching !!
I have never caught a mullet on lure. Well done!
Thanks 👍 Yeah 100% the biggest mullet i have caught on a lure
Awesome Video Alan!!! My Dad used to use two Gold Daiwa GS9's for surf fishing and he always had problems with them being a bit crunchy, and not being smooth. And he looks after his fishing gear to yea, its not like he was full on submerging them in the salt water.
Thanks Jared. Yeah you make a really interesting point. Many of us love fishing and are happy to splurge some cash on nice reels. Its a real shame when there not as smooth as we hope or as durable. Especially when you do pay good money and treat them well. Plus with all the advertising these days of being sealed and protected from the elements much of it has become marketing. Which im a sucker for at times LOL
Yea exactly, it’s a real shame, things aren’t built like they used to be. In my Nunnus garage there are some old reels from maybe the 70s that haven’t been used since maybe 2006 and they still work really well
There prob collectors items. I have a few mates who love the old reels they travel around the country markets trying to find them. Might be fascinating what you find in there.
Yea I'll have to do a bit of research on what they are cause I have no idea to be honest.
who knows you might be sitting on a small fortune. I love seeing the old reels, and how far the technology has come.
Another great vid Alan, bugger about your Luvius Reel:( I hooked a mullet like yours on the Pambula River 3 weeks ago.....It straightened out a 30Lb Decoy egg clip that I had on my lure. Fight like crazy
Thanks David !! Yeah I'm sure ill get the reel serviced and it will be all OK. That's amazing about the mullet that you hooked which straightened at 30lb clip. Did you catch it or or did the clip completely give way. I lost a giant squid a few years back when the clip gave way to the pressure and have never used them since.
@@fishingmad yeah lost it Alan....and the Splash Prawn that was in the mullets gob :(
bugger, thats what motivates us to get out and fish more.
Hey mate! I live here and melbourne and the next step in my fishing experienve is kayak fishing. If you have some starter tips and maybe even a kayak you recommend for a beginner, that would be great.
Id be happy to help. First have a look at this as a good starting point on kayaks to look at fishingmad.com.au/article/fishing-kayak-buyers-guide-2021 it will really help with understanding the budgets and features. Also have a look at this one of my favourites and has plenty of good tips czcams.com/video/qGV18ZKzSCA/video.html if you have any questions dont hesitate to ask. Kayak fishing is an amazing sport but just need to make sure you cover all the safety and get the features that suits you.
@@fishingmad Thanks! Do you have any good spots you know about, around St kilda and black rock area, and do we use baits or lures there?
Both those spots are exceptional for kayak fishing. Great for pinkies, snapper, flathead, snook and more. Have a look at this which should be helpful fishingmad.com.au/locations cheers
Great video Alan 👍
Thanks 👍 Glad you enjoyed it.
It's been some time since I've been but I love it out there.
Good to hear, hopefully you'll get more fishing time soon. Maybe over Easter break
Yeah I hope so... you can never have enough fishing time lol
100% agreed, I hope you get some time out there and land a few fish. Sounds like you have deserved it.
Sorry about your reel! Awsome video! What connection knot do you use for your lighter setups?
Thanks David, im sure the reel will be A OK after a decent service. Generally ill go with either a double uni or FG knot. They rarely let me down. The new rods with really small guides an FG is excellent, but often when im retying leaders on my kayak i just do a double uni as an FG can be tricky to do on yak and i get a little inpatient.
Solid mullet GREAT FIGHT.
Thanks !! It sure was fun on the light stuff
Hi Alan, just wondering if you worked out what happened to the Daiwa Luvius ? I have one thats a few years old now and it's still smooth on the drag and the gearing . Mine was made in Japan but the newer ones are built in Thailand , the problem I found is many of the reels that come from Thailand are not greased properly on the main gears and I also found bearings that were bone dry. I love Daiwa reels but this is a quality control problem. The spin or baitcast reels are great as long as they are serviced before you even fish them , I strip them down grease and oil where it's needed , change out dellrin bushings and replace with bearings and they are good to go.
Thanks Evan really good explanation and some great suggestions. The 20 luvias is made in Japan. I bought it for 2 reasons the weight of 150g which really appealed to me and because it was a Japanese make. I was thinking of taking it apart and having a look but the volume of components on the new magsealed LT reels is insane so ill send it back for a service and hopefully that will do the trick
@@fishingmad I haven't pulled apart any of the mag sealed stuff yet unless I can get the magseal oil . It is available overseas but daiwa won't sell it here.. I would love to find out what went wrong , cheers mate.
Thats really interesting about the magseal oil. Ive had a few mates try taking the LT reels apart and they said to avoid it. ill send this one back and see if i can get some details on what was wrong with it.
The title is misleading. The reel shown in the video that died is the 2020 model not the 2021 model.
Love the way you are visiting iconic VIC locations.
Thanks Brad, yeah has been a real goal of mine to cover many of the great locations all around Victoria. ( Work gets in the way at times LOL ), our trip in Gippsland unfortunately was cut short due to extereme winds, otherwise we would have also covered gippsland lakes, hollands landing and lakes entrance. ill have to save those for another time.
Hi Alan, where did you launch from. i was going there in a couple of days. thanks
Just at the very end of the main car park
Great video, went here couple of weeks ago and the bites were really slow. Caught about 5 flathead, 2 tailor and around 10 bream all weekend. Best of luck
Thanks !!! Sounds like you did better than we did. We tried hitting 5 places in 5 days and really underestimated how long it took each day to pack up and setup camp and travel to a new destination and work out the best places to launch and fish with the challenging weather conditions. Next time we will pick less spots and spend a few days at each to really have time to enjoy it and work out the system. Can I ask did you get the bream along the edges or deeper. We were targeting the edges which i feel may have been an error
@@fishingmad In Lake Tyers we were fishing in the place called Trident Arms, there were massive sand flats on the points of each arm which is where we saw at least over 600 Bream. On those flats I was able to pick up a 38 cm bream with a hurricane twitch 50 hard body and a 36 cm bream on a cranka crab. We went into the 3 arms, in the first arm we were able to pick up a nice 55cm tailor. In the second arm we caught maybe 3 to 4 bream down the end of the arm but was able to pick up a flatty in the deeper water. We weren’t able to pick up anything in the 3rd but the flats at the points just had heaps and heaps of bream but just weren’t eating. When fishing those flats have a go at some cranka crabs and hardbodys to pick up those bream, if nothing then have a go at the soft plastics but we didn’t try with soft plastics. Good luck to you Allan.
Awesome, thank you so much for the detailed reply. That really helpful. I was really curios. Proves my point that we really needed to spend a few days there and tackle several different spots as the lake is so big. A big thank you !!
@@fishingmad your very welcome definitely try tridents arm! Good luck!
Awesome, thank you
Great video mate, what happened with the reel in the end?
Reel, ended up being all OK in the end. basic service and was good as gold.
@@fishingmad good to hear as I just purchased one and freaked after seeing this 😆
Just got back from a trip here. Landed a nice 54cm flatty and a tonne of Tailor. Largest one my mate caught was just over 80cm. Ripping spot.
Wow, thats brilliant, well done. If i can ask what were you catching the Tailor on and which part of the lake ? Its a beautiful spot I'm hopeful to go back and spend a few days fishing it.
@@fishingmad they were feeding on garfish, so we used soft plastics that had a silvery colour, or straight up metal lures trolled .
They were bailing up the garfish into the corners , you could pick where they were feeding from either all the bubbles, or schools of them breaking the water surface. Dawn and dusk were the best times when the water went wild!
Awesome, THANK YOU for replying with those details. Always great insight and will help next time I head up that way.
@@fishingmad no worries!
Were you able to save the Luvias or did you have to shoot it and bury it in the backyard?
Yep it was fine in the end, basic service and all good to go
Did you get an answer to what happened to the reel?
Just curious as to what was the diagnoses from Daiwa regarding your Luvias reel ?
So far its been OK, I striped it down, gave it a very thorough clean it, some oil, put new line on it and so far has been OK. I was just about to send it back for a service, which I still might do.
Hey mate I was looking at the Daiwa td black slugger rod which is 8ft, 6-12 kg and has a cast weight of 14-60g, would this Luvias 4000 be a perfect match for this rod?I would put 20lb or 30lb j braid on it and chase bonito and kings in Sydney harbour.
The Luvias reels are very light weight maybe to light weight for a rod of that weight class. They are considered finesse reels. For Kings and bonitos you would want something more heavy duty.
@@fishingmadwhat about the Daiwa td black slugger rod with a Saltist MQ 4000 with 20lb j braid?
That was one epic fight Alan i was happy for you when you landed that monster mullet I've caught few 50cm mullet at sanctuary lakes and the fight is like nothing else i reckon once the get over 50cm i reckon they are hardest fighting fish kilo for kilo and ive lost bigger ones
Thanks !! Yeah ive caught some big mullet that way too. They seem to go nuts over a bit of scent. The mullet here were poddy mullet and the girth on them is crazy. The body and weight of a carp but a really string swimming action. But so much fun. Hope to see ya down there at some point.
@@fishingmad yeah and I've seen you catch few bigger mullets at sanctuary lakes but still not like the ones I've caught my biggest is 52cm and 1.6kg
@@fishingmad but the bigger ones I've caught were on bait I've caught heaps of smaller ones on plastic but can't get the bigger ones on plastic
Wow 52cm and 1.6 kg thats epic. Well done !!
Good tip, ill keep that in mind. Dont think I've ever fished that spot with bait, but would be very interesting.
Wow. That’s it just wow 😂
Thanks !!! Yeah we struggled but that poddy mullet was epic. Maybe not so much for my reel
@@fishingmad haha oh well, worth it 👍
Yeah 100% worth it
Make a video when you get the reel back from Daiwa and let us know. Whether be it's an isolated fault in the reel or all models etc. Keen to know before getting one.
100% will do. Not sure how long it will take but ill get something out soon. Also keep in mind a new luvias reel was released last week the luvias airity. Its a lot more expensive too
Alan: "He's real close now"
Mr Mullet: "Hold my beer, Al"
Great video, a real testament to your knot tying :-)
😁 Yeah a few nervous moments trying to land it on silly string and ultra light gear. Thanks as always for the positive comments
Hmm sorry about your reel! what size was it? looks like it should have been up to the task but these things happen I guess ...
Hi John, It was a 20 Daiwa Luvias 2000D. I thought it should have stood up a little better than that but ill send it off for a service and hopefully it will be fine.
👍
Little spot called nowa Nowa & metung
Yeah we ventured up to Nowa Nowa for a couple of hours, Amazing spot. Caught a few small bream on surface lures, amazing how much deeper the water was at Nowa Nowa compared to Millers Point. Hoping to get up to Metung at some point
That poddy made mince meat of that Luvias. In more ways than one. As you said, that reel should be smooth as silk. Send her back mate.
Yeah i think ill send it back to Daiwa servicing. For a $600 reel it probably hasn't quite lived up to my expectations. I love that it weighs 150 grams, and it looks so nice. but its missed the mark in a couple of areas. That mullet was pretty epic, I actually hooked 3 that day in about 6 hours but only landed the one. Amazing watching them leap out of the water right next to you. One nearly landed in my mates kayak.
@@fishingmad now that would have been some great viewing!
Yeah 100%. Than again, it wasn't 4 monster squid in 20 minutes. Will save that one for a day in the not to distant future. Cant wait to do that again.
@@fishingmad, I'm trying San Remo on Wednesday. There's an area there between the Phillip Island bridge and the Eastern entrance that is well known for monster squid. I'll be giving it a go. If it's half as good as Reef Island, it'll be good!
Thats awesome Darren, good luck. Ive seen some huge ones near phillip island before. Yeah I still cant believe how good it was. Don't forget to take a Yamashita live 3.5 in rainbow that thing was dynamite.
How do you find the fold out net?
I really like that it easily fits in the front compartment of the Pro Angler, its light and fits well in the h-crate. The only downside was that it is a little short and netting a fish can be a little difficult. It would be perfect if it was 20 or 30cm longer, but overall really good for the price you pay. I will use it as my go to estuary fishing net and continue using my Berkley collapsible net when fishing in the bay
@@fishingmad what length Berkeley net you use? I’m looking to get a new net for kayak fishing but not too sure what’s going to be a good size.
I think its the berkley catch and release foldable net. The handle length is about double the length about 90cm long.
Hey Alan, that’s pretty disappointing about the Luvias, I’m sure Daiwa Australian will look after you though, they’ve picked up their game in last few years.
For a few extra bucks I’d get the 2500 Certate Lt next time, slightly heavier but is much more solid. I’ve got 3 and been using them for a while with no issues.
Thanks !!! Yeah I'm sure Daiwa will be fine getting a service done on the reel. I agree with you about the certate. I was so close to buying that instead but went the luvias purely based on weight as i wanted an insanely light setup and the luvias was only 150 gram. But in hindsight the certate is certainly more heavy duty.
I have a suspicion that Daiwa’s zaion body on the luvias isn’t great under bigger loads then intended and maybe it flexed enough to cause some damage!?
Same thing happened to my Sol 3 after some use, was only super smooth for the first outing then it developed play and noise soon after. On flip side I’ve never had that issue with a certate, the 2016 models are great also if you can still find one!
Yeah i think your 100% right as i too have experienced the same think with my sol 3. Has a 10KG drag capacity I caught a snapper which would have been 4kg max and it to hasnt been as smooth. Im not sure if this is all to do with the Zion LT concept, I know a new Luvias came out last week which looks a lot more like the certate. Yeah the 2016 certate are a classic. The look amazing and super durable. id happily buy a couple if i found them
I never catch big mullet like that
Yeah they are so hard to catch, they spook so easily. We saw heaps of them but only managed a few hook ups
For $600 it should be able to deal with a lot more punishment than that. I'd take it back for a warranty replacement Alan, something's gotta be wrong with it.
Thanks Kieran. I 100% agree, ill be doing exactly that this week. Gotta expect better durability from a reel worth $600
Send it in to Daiwa, i'm pretty sure they will fix it. That reel is definitely not made for those big mullet haha.
100% agreed, ill be doing exactly that
@@fishingmad have they fixed it?
You'd expect more from a $600 reel ey... I had thought DAIWA reels were incredibly durable..
Yeah 100%, its a little disappointing. This reel only weighs 150 grams so maybe its not as durable as many of the others like the certate etc
All Daiwa is overpriced. Shimano all the way
What was wrong with your reel did you find out what it was because I thinking about buying one are two of them I don’t know now because you are having problems with your reel
The reel ended up being fine. I gave it a very basic service and respooled it with new line and its been perfectly fine. There is new Luvias now called airity but it is significantly more expensive but very nice and the certate is always worth a look too.
I thought it was the 2021 Daiwa Lavias LT FC airity I like but the only thing I don’t like about it is the spool you can not put to much line the lbs test line I used is 7lbs sunline fine float 2 it comes in a spool of 150 m it’s got this other number it’s 1.75 but it’s in Japanese language I got it from Fishing USA SHOP IN AMERICA LOOK THEM UP $19.99 it’s is some good line
The rod is ultralight , the line is ultra light , what do you expect!? 1-4 kg is nothing . Luvias or any reel can easily get this mullet up. You loosen the drag so much due to ur weak line, of cos the reel will burn. I use a luvias, using a PE 0.8 line and 16 pound leader No problem even when I caught a 6.3KG sea bass. Can’t be bother to service the reel and it’s still working fine till today.
If you get treated anything like I did by Daiwa in the past you will never buy their brand again.I was told by their marketing dept that the 4000 size reel and rod combo were not suitable for the size of fish I was targeting, while their brochures said it was voted the best for big pike(20lb +).Had the reel strip a brass gear and the rod could be heard pinging its fibres on an 18lb fish being landed on 12lb line makes no sense.
Yeah that makes no sense at all. Its funny since posting the vid Ive had so many mixed responses good and bad so far.
A 50cm mullet running 1lb of drag can't/shouldn't damage a brand new luvias lol😂, don't overthink the size of fish it wasnt your fault or the fishes, Luvias can absolutely handle a hell of a lot more than a 1 kilo mullet. You just got a dud unfortunately their quality control isn't the best these days and it's usually only a matter of time until a tackle enthusiast gets that one on the shelf that isn't up to scratch! My Luvias LT's have been flawless however, particularly my 2500 which after a year of abuse is as smooth as my Certate LT's, with plenty of large fish under heavy drag to its name, even including fish like samsonfish/amberjack and literally hundreds of trevally. Hopefully your reel was replaced for you? It should be much smoother than a Vanford for reference, and in my experience with several of each should also hold that smoothness for longer, but no 2 reels are assembled the same and in my experience 1 in 3 will be below standard, and boy does it suck when thats the one we end up with, we should be able to buy a new reel and not have to send it back the next week haha, especially after spending $600 on one! Hopefully it was sorted for you so you could actually use the reel you paid for.
Need to use local bait
Nice 1 string guitar mate. Can you play any other tunes on it?
What happened to that reel is unacceptable. I would not sent it back to Diawa for servicing. I would take it back to where you purchased it and politely demand a refund. Let them know that you are aware of your rights under Australian consumer protection laws and that the reel has failed to meet the the 2 basic requirements of "Fit for use" and "reasonable durability".
I'm glad I saw this as I had been flirting with the idea of getting some Diawa gear but after this will stick to Shimano that has a 10 yr gaurantee, no questions asked. So do Okuma I believe. cheers.
Thanks Victor. Yeah mate i bought several reels a few months ago a 2 vanfords and stradic SW and a saragosa 8000 they have been flawless to date. I also bought a luvias and a sol 3 both which have had some niggley issues. ill be taking the luvias back to the store in the coming days to have sent back. Also the drag sounds on the shimano reels have been sensational
I only buy the low end Diawa reels but I certainly haven't been impressed.
Thanks Paul, yeah I have mixed emotions at the moment. Im a big Daiwa fanboy but ive had some issues with some of their reels lately.
Oh no not the reel!
Yeah my little 20 Luvias 2000 isnt quite the same after catching that fish. Enjoy the video.
Great mullet. I would still be crying
Yeah it was epic, ill be taking the luvias apart or to a service dealer to hopefully get it sorted.
@@fishingmad don't open it yourself it will void warranty. Just give it back to where you bought it from or send directly to diawa
@@fishingmad send it to daiwa mate they know best and have good customer service
Stick with Shimano mate 😅
Yeah you might be right. My recent shimano reels the vanford and saragosa have been awesome vs the luvias and sol 3 which have both had a few issues.
