  • hey guys! some of you might not know this, but it was actually through my webcomic that I started to gain traction on CZcams, not the other way around. so I thought today I would talk about all that I've learned drawing these 170+ pages of Unfamiliar, things I wished I knew from the start and how I tackle the endless grind of making a long story page by page on the internet.

    Yall in the comments keep in mind writing a comic isn't only "motivation", it's also discipline. There are gonna be hard days.

    • @JadeAnnabelArt
      @JadeAnnabelArt Před 2 lety +26

      They say it takes a few weeks to make a habit. Once you get used to doing something consistently, it's also a lot easier. I did a month long challenge for daily art in May, and by June it felt really strange not drawing. (I wanted to recover before art fight, so I didn't keep the daily uploads up).
      My point is 100% discipline, and yes, I had days where drawing was really hard, especially by the end of the month. But once you get into a habit it's a lot easier to keep it up.

    • @Dumbassfeature
      @Dumbassfeature Před rokem +6

      The will to stay disciplined comes from motivation imo. If you have no motivation, you arent going to stay consistent. I think its easy for people to see discipline and hard work is a factor and to applaud it, but a lot of people look at what goes behind that and think, ‘wow, what kind of thing could drive a person to stick through the hard days?’

    I've always wanted to make comics I've had the characters in my head for like a decade now but I can never decide on a story for them. There world just gets adapted to whatever I'm obsessed with at the time. It kinda makes me sad knowing these characters are probably gonna die with me never having a story.

      Maybe think about your characters' fears and dreams (as Lavendertowne said) and make conflict from it
      If your character is a bully who's afraid of getting bullied, for example, give it plot by giving answers to questions like "how did X turn into a bully" or "how do we stop X from bullying"
      Then get other characters involved, and boom, plot

      hmm maybe you could make their story involve travelling to different worlds, so their setting, outfits and even story changes a lot whenever they jump to a new place. I don't know what it is you already have established, though, so sorry if this isn't applicable at all.

      If i cant decide on a set story for a character(s) then i make AUs of these characters in twisted versions of their original story. This works for me since each story i write is part of a long timeline of how earth got hecked up by a big alien force. Theres also 2 versions of this timeline so I dont have to stick with one version of the story.

The motivation advice is really good. it makes characters feel more fluid and alive. If a character(s) don’t have a goal or motivation it’s kind of hard to fill in the rest. Thank you for hte advice~

      As much as it sucks, I suggest focusing on fanart with doing your art on the side. Fanart draws in people familiar with it, while your personal art is only applicable to those that understand it. I post weekly videos and while personal art gets max 5 views (I suspect from my small friend group) a piece of fanart I drew got 78 views in under a week. It also added two new subs who liked my art style and wanted to stick around.
      Slowly filter out the fanart and replace it with your own art. It sorta sucks but it's part of the grind x-x

    This is AWESOME! I really do want to make a webcomic someday. and seriously, that advice about building motivation as a skill is HUGE. it's so hard and not talked about much but it's SOOOO true. continuing things is a skill. feeling distracted or unmotivated is completely normal and it doesn't mean you're not cut out for it. it's something all the greats had to work through.
    also oooh 5:20 I love that goat character. I'm a sucker for character designs with more than two eyes, and horns.
    also 7:44 that background song... it's so familiar (ha) but I can't place it!!! I wish LavenderTowne would list the songs she uses in the description haha
