  • There are a few critical mistakes that keep good art from getting noticed and good artists from developing a fanbase! I used to sabotage myself terribly, and I don't want you guys makin' the same mistakes.

    another tip: do some “draw this in your style” stuff!! some artists will re post the art to their story, and if they have a somewhat large following, people will see your art and if they like it they’ll even give you a follow :)

      NANDU 7865 posts gain traction differently based on time posted(this is just one of the factors, of course having likable content is important too). This varies by website and applies most heavily towards Instagram and Reddit. Basically, if you post the same thing twice, changing only the time posted, you’re likely to get two different results(the one posted at a bad time may have 0 chance of blowing up, even if it’s good). Why timezone matters is that some people just happen to live in an area where peak posting times coincide with times they’d normally post anyway, while other people may have to post at 4 in the morning(in their timezone) to hit that peak time.

    Having a voice on the internet is not like screaming into a void. It's like screaming into a crowd that's way over the room capacity where some people are pushing and shoving; some are robots, some have megaphones, some have surround sound microphones, and some just have a new thing that megaphone/microphones take interest in.

    So for the fanart part. I’ve seen people draw fanart for this one show. When the artist doesn’t draw fanart, they usually have 1k likes instead of 4k likes dorm the fanart they post. When the artist stops drawing fanart, they just get less then 1k likes and they just lose followers. It’s really upsetting for the artist since not many people follow them for their art, instead, people follow for fanart and not want to follow for their original art.

      Lack of appealing to audiences(No tags, no consideration for thumbnails and titles), only doing what they enjoy/putting the same or more amount into things that they like but are unpopular, and others are the reasons why. Audiences need talent but the Internet needs a marketing strategy to show your work to audiences. And God forbid the platforms help, they only care about promoting what gets the most likes so that way there's a bigger chance other people will like it and spend more time on their platform looking at it, that's why luck is involved

People will ignore or discourage "pretty" people because they see them as competition or they get jealous. It's not 100% the same for art, but it's pretty similar in my opinion.

I had a phase where I just drew "how to train your dragon" art and got over 20+ likes (I am a rather small account) 👀 and I felt confident that people like my art, so I finally got out of the phase and just started of doing my own personal art and just got like 10+ likes. I am still doing fanart sometimes, but people don’t comment, or don’t give it any attention for what I did. I know it's not that important to get the likes or earn followers, but I would love if somebody would just criticize my art in an informative way so I can improve easier...

    I think people misunderstand the fanart thing.
    I generally don't do any type of fanart, I'm making my own comic so thats what I draw. My art isnt doing very well at the moment so I was told to do fanart.
    Here's the thing.
    A year ago I was drawing manga only, I managed to get a couple thousand ppls attention with it, then I changed my artstyle completely, the views and subs are down now.
    Heres what you should do, draw a little bit of fanart here and there, for example, when you watch batman and feel like drawing batman then draw batman.
    But you shouldn't only just draw batman and then one day start drawing original stuff. You should have 9/10 original posts and 1/10 fanart. That way people can still get drawn in and relate to your love for supernatural, but they will still stay, if they do stay, for ALL the art because it wouldnt be worth it just for that one supernatural drawing. ;)

So, for months I'll be drawing fanart and have no interest in Ocs, then for months I'll obsess over my OCs and draw them for months. I never say I'm a fanart blog or an oc blog, just that I draw whatever I feel like drawing. If I wanna draw five fanarts and two Ocs or no fanart and 20 Ocs, it's just what I do. I mean my art is good, I know it is(I'm not being narcissistic, I just don't put myself and my art down anymore and all that jazz)...but obviously the fanart always does way better. I've kinda accepted it right now that my followers are split with some liking only my fanart and some liking only my oc art and a very rare few who love all of it :/

    I am unfortunately guilty of wanting to be popular like this. Ever since I was a kid, I dreamt of being popular. I was quiet, but well liked by a fair amount of people. But I was very visually imaginative, and had many fantasies. I daydreamed often, and I used those to fuel my drawings.
    But I don’t know what it is that has happened to me in my childhood. Because, I realize that every time I see popular artists on Instagram, i just feel a little hurt. I had never cared to that extent before, but I realize it’s been coming out in the past several years.
    Everyone keeps saying that to try to be more unique. I try to be creative, to be more unique. But it’s actually harder than it is. I feel like I don’t know where to start, or where to get ideas. Because everyone had already done them. I’m just sick of being a nobody for so long. When can I be like that?”
    Of course in reality, it’s also a competition. But thing is, I don’t want to become greedy and competitive. I just want to earn attention in the most honest ways possible.
    I know that it’s unhealthy to think like this. As a Adult woman, I’m still trying to work on this to not feel this way. But sometimes whenever I look at popular CZcamsrs and Artists, it’s hard to not think
    “Wow...they have so much fun. They got everything together in their lives, and everyone loves them. I wish I could be like them. Fans even draw free fanart for them.”
    And for the friends of those popular CZcamsrs/artists, it’s like a little group where they draw their friends free requests.
    I apologize for the long rant. But I wanted to vent this out, because I don’t know who to vent to. Forgive me if I come across as Jealous or ‘Salty’. I truly don’t mean that. Some times, it’s just hard.

      This is really late, but in no way are you a nobody because your not popular for one your a somebody. And a few little tips that I have had a theory on. Is that most of the time content creaters that make similar content as an already really popular content creater did, does not get the same amount of attention the original content creator created. Because although they both seem the same and look the same they are not one has given it more of themselves from what they enjoy not really the care of being similar to others but just involving there self giving it some of there own personality and opinions. And from what I see many of your seemingly popular CZcamsrs are like this they make things they enjoy rather than what they don't like you give it more of your time. I would honestly say a tip of advice to you is to just Go with your gut and create what you like, keep in mind it can be similar to someone else's but not copied and it has to be something that's somewhat unique or has very good meaning to you ❤

      @@user-wz6pi2jj4c Hey, really thank you for this, and whoever else gave me support in this thread.
      During when I made this comment, I was in a very mentally confusing place. I don’t want to go on too much, but Home/ family life was starting to change. And I guess I was just wishing to be noticed, because it seemed to be the only way I can get validation of my ‘talents’. In short, I’ve felt like I was always behind everyone, and tried to seek attention and validation. It’s also at that time, I was trying to post on Instagram every 2-3 days, and never realized how exhausting that was.
      Right now I’m going through some things and struggles. But Art has always been the stress reliever and passion in my life. So I found a new fandom last year, changed things up a bit. Mixing up and experiment in different art styles to be more fun! I also started taking breaks in between art posts, so I feel like I can rest these days. Tried to not look at the follower count of others around me, even though it’s tempting from time to time.
      Still trying to fight a part of the algorithm and hoping I can find “my calling” through starting art commissions for the first time. But I’m feeling a bit better and having fun with what I do now. One step at a time.
      Thank you again. I hope you have a good day!

    #1 Have an enjoyable personality
    #2 Post art as much as possible to make opportunities to be seen

      Tell that to all the businesses that exist entirely because they consistently make things popular.
      #1 Be yourself. You don't have to get most people to like you, you can get a few people to love you and you'll be solid.
      #2 You have finite time to produce work. Grinding away won't matter if nobody sees it. Spend time to try to maximize the visibility of your work to get the most out of your time.
      #3 Know what you want, and do what is requires to get there. You don't have to compromise your values, but if you want to get successful, just doing whatever you want isn't a very sound strategy for most.

    1:57 that was what I thought. I was like 13 when I started practising and practising how to make my art more and more realistic because I felt like only then it could actually be good enough for instagram. I gained followers and was happy when I got likes and ashamed of my art when it didn't get likes. The problem was that I didn't have fun creating art anymore. I had like 150 insta followers and I felt like I had to draw realistic stuff and just had to draw it well enough and then I'd gain followers. So I really lost all the fun and creativity and over time also stopped creating art. One day, I discovered your CZcams channel and other artists like Kasey Golden and realised art does not have to look realistic to be good. That discovery motivated me immensely and I started drawing again. This time, I didn't draw realistically but more cartoonish. I experimented around, got a tablet, tried to find my style and stuff. When I posted something for the first time since a couple of months I was pretty excited to show off my new art. It was the first digital art I had posted. It rarely got any likes. I kinda understood though because it wasn't good at all. I continued posting art but I kept getting less and less likes. The people who followed me had followed me for realism, not some mediocre cartoonish art. I stopped posting my art and decided that from now on I'm only going to create art for myself until I am completely happy with the way I draw. I'm doing that right now, still haven't found my style but I'm learning. Once I feel like I'm ready, I'm gonna create a new account one which I will post my own, original art. I don't think anyone read this but it felt good to write my journey down lol

      I make art for Instagram as well, the reason my art isn’t good is because I’m just lacking motivation, and that’s because I don’t have the skill I wish I would have, and when I do have motivation, I either start drawing, and it just keeps going wrong and I give up, or I’ll start making a piece that I like, but then I’ll start rushing through it because I’m like “this is taking me forever, I’m so tired of it, but I need it ‘finished’” and it never really gets finished at all. It just looks rushed because I think I’m taking too long with my art.
      The main thing that’s stopping my from making art though is anatomy- like I’ll have this epic pose in mind, and then I’ll draw it out which could take me hours, and then I’m done with it and then whatever I’m drawing looks deformed-
      Hhhhh

    I recently just quitted all of my social media to focus on my art. Because like you said. When you're not "popular" you usually take it on yourself and how you draw. Im taking it slow, but it's good to rediscover why i love drawing so much and what i want to share with my style :D
    Again thank you for all of your great tips, i'll probably be going back on social medias in maybe a year. But before that i want to learn to appreciate my art and what i like about it. :)

      I feel like I should start doing the same. I’ve been frustrated as of late, comparing myself to other artists and how much fame they get. It’s been really messing me up. I’ve had thoughts about abandoning my Instagram account and starting fresh with a new one. Maybe I should quit for a while, focus on stuff like the comic series I’ve been wanting to make or animations ideas I’ve been holding back. And maybe one day I can come back to social media with something new and genuine to offer

    Specifically I started drawing like a years ago and till now I'm still having trouble trying to improve my skill because it's feel like I kept drawing the same thing over and over again with no details and messy lines. But then someone told me "If drawing is part of your hobby you should be proud of it" I was kinda confused but then I figured it's about "Draw what you like" so I took it to heart and draw more of what I want.

    Getting your art and maybe youtube videos out is kind of like playing poker.
    If you're playing and all you do is place all of the cards you have down because you think that if you're just lucky you'll win, you're definitely going to lose and not get discovered.
    But if you've studied all the rules, techniques, and other experiences, you'll more likely win the round and get discovered more (some luck is still involved, but you'll more likely win).

      I dislike this metaphor. Poker is about rules, and strategies, but it's also about deception, manipulation, and antagonistic competition.

    • @cliftut
      @cliftut Před 6 lety +12

      seigeengine has a point on one level, but the analogy works in that poker has a strong random component as well as a skill component, plus social factors and strategies. Also, what poker is "about" for you will depend on who you are and how you approach the table, though different activities do tend to attract different types of people. Not all competition is antagonistic. Sometimes it is constructive.

    Truuue... I've thought about this a lot but it's also kind of sad how people/audience only want to follow a page/blog that has only the artist's art... and then unfollow/get disinterested whenever the artist posts about their life or has an update it's like they hate seeing the artist is a real person and all they want is content content content. That's the only thing that's upsetting.

    • @drililali
      @drililali Před 6 lety +19

      remainingembers Yeah it's kinda sad but for example on tumblr I can't stand when my dash is full of somebody's shitposts and it shuts out otger artists too bc it's too much and frequent.

    • @remainingembers
      @remainingembers Před 6 lety +4

      yeah but i dont mean artists posting shitposts or silly stuff, more like one personal-ish post or smth that's not Cute Fanart that everyone flocks to. It's like anything that has more to do with the artist makes people unfollow or care less bc sometimes they dont see artists as people you know what I mean?

    • @lengarion
      @lengarion Před 6 lety +18

      remainingembers I think you have the wrong idea of why people follow artists online. Most of the time, what people care about is just the art. It's rare that an artist online seems interesting enough that one would want to know about non art related topics, too. I think whether or not your audience cares about your private life is something you need to test out carefully and slowly.
      People aren't unfeeling, but the internet is big, and time is sparse, and therecs a big difference between a casual follower and a huge fan.

    • @remainingembers
      @remainingembers Před 6 lety +5

      Maybe so for very professional artists who have dedicated places for their artwork, I'm not so much talking about that than just general artists and ones who do their work for hobby more than for actual commission or for a field. Regardless of who and where, treating artists or any creator like faceless machines only there to give content of whatever they posted once is generally hurtful imo. I'm talking people unfollowing for an artist answering one single question or not posting a few days due to school, or just how it feels as an artist posting when you only get interaction from others when you post some goofy meme art, but not on anything else or anything meaningful in your life yanno.

    • @iodine1169
      @iodine1169 Před 6 lety +7

      Is that surprising? People are rarely interested in the artist's life since it is irrelevant to them. Some artists are also very obnoxious about this, such as using their pages as a soapbox for their personal (usually financial) issues. I don't think people mind the occasional non-art update, but if it becomes too frequent or preachy there is no reason to continue following said artist.
