"What On EARTH Is Going On?!" - Julia Hartley-Brewer SLAMS Lack Of RAF Planes For D-Day Anniversary

  • Talk’s Julia Hartley-Brewer is joined by former Armed Forces minister Mark Francois, criticising the “lack of aircrafts” to commemorate D-Day.
The shortage of planes for a mass parachute drop to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day shows why more money needs to be spent on defence, Grant Shapps has said.
Defence chiefs are scrambling to secure more aircraft as crises in Ukraine and the Middle East have left the RAF’s transport fleet stretched.
Hundreds of paratroopers had been expected to jump into Normandy to honour the actions of their predecessors in the Second World War, but plans have been scaled back due to a shortage of aircraft.

I haven't found out whether this is a design/production problem, lack of spares or lack of maintenance. If 'availability' is persistantly below 20%, then something very wrong is going on. If something 'bad' is happening on this issue, then it's probably happening elsewhere.

Any ships, aircraft, hardware etc etc should all be made in Britain creating jobs. Also I personally think it's about time we had gun ranges all over Britain and the population can go and learn to shoot different types of firearms. Because if we got invaded tomorrow, way too many wouldn't be able to fight with a stick let alone an assault rifle. If everyone knew how to clean, handle and fire a gun, we'd have a society completely ready to fight if a danger ever came to Britains shores. I even think jiu jitsu, boxing and hand to hand combat training should start in schools. A well prepared country is a far better place to be, than one panicking and suffering from being unprepared. Plus I think teens would enjoy it, might actually help reduce crime.

It has to be pure ignorance and the shocking state of education these days. Families that have their 'war dead' on the walls, as I do, have a connection that seems to been lost nowadays. My late mother was a seamstress but that was turned to making airpilots jackets etc during WWII. Everone had a skill that was utilised. I just don't see what role some of today's students could take on, or if they would even understand that bombs will fall??

We have the sixth highest defence spending in the world. 2.3% of GDP. $70 billion per year.
And we have sweet fa to show for it. We spend increasingly more for less kit. All the money going on chinless wonder civil servants, DEI diversity managers or being pocketed by Ministers cronies.
And when we do buy some stuff that works out politicians immediately give it away.
If I recall correctly we were sending RAF pilots to train to fly in Italy because our training establishments were too busy training Ukrainian pilots.... Why didn't they train in Italy if the Italians had the capacity to take foreign pilots for training.
We should be like Poland and buy proven off the shelf equipment that works and get more bang for our buck rather than pandering to corrupt procurement processes.

Yes the Lockheed Hercules was reliable but like all machines that have given long service the fleet was worn out. The fleet had centre wing box fatigue problems as well as other issues. There was no question the aircraft had come to the end of its safe and useful life. Replacement was inevitable, if the A400 was the right aircraft is another question.
