Life in Kuwait is the focus of this 1960s color educational film. The camera takes us through the streets starting at mark 01:45. “Kuwait. The place you’ve been hearing about,” the narrator proclaims. The film features a brief history of the country (mark 02:50) as a world map fills the screen, followed by desert scenes and images of oil pipelines and refineries. At mark 05:00 we see some of the items imported to Kuwait, everything from automobiles to razor blades. Some of that merchandise is shown in shops starting at mark 06:30, ranging from radios and televisions to accordions. The nation’s ruler, Abdullah III Al-Salim Al-Sabah, is shown at mark 07:34, and credited with making Kuwait “modern.” Following a discussion of state-of-the-art medical techniques the film tackles education including those with special needs such as sight impairment (mark 12:25). But the majority of Kuwait’s success relies on oil production, a topic discussed at length beginning at mark 17:53, followed by a discussion of how the country supplies water to its most arid regions (mark 20:10) to aid in crop production. “There you have a close-up on Kuwait,” the narrator says starting at mark 24:24, “bustling and vigorous, cosmopolitan and friendly.”
Kuwait is a country in Western Asia. Situated in the northern edge of Eastern Arabia at the tip of the Persian Gulf, it shares borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia. As of 2016, Kuwait has a population of 4.2 million people; 1.3 million are Kuwaitis and 2.9 million are expatriates. Expatriates account for 70% of the population.
Oil reserves were discovered in 1938. From 1946 to 1982, the country underwent large-scale modernization. In the 1980s, Kuwait experienced a period of geopolitical instability and an economic crisis following the stock market crash. In 1990, Kuwait was invaded by Iraq. The Iraqi occupation came to an end in 1991 after military intervention by coalition forces. At the end of the war, there were extensive efforts to revive the economy and rebuild national infrastructure.
Kuwait is a constitutional emirate with a semi-democratic political system. It has a high income economy backed by the world's sixth largest oil reserves. The Kuwaiti dinar is the highest valued currency in the world. According to the World Bank, the country has the fourth highest per capita income in the world. The Constitution was promulgated in 1962, making Kuwait the most democratic country in the region. Kuwait ranks highly in regional metrics of gender equality, as it has the region's highest Global Gender Gap ranking.

I wonder where those three overseas students from Kuwait are today, and seeing them, makes you ponder what became of them?!
The fourth largest exporter of oil, behind the the United States, Venezuela, and the Soviet Union. Kuwait ranked in 10th place last year, producing 2.7 million barrels of oil a day during 2021, which accounted for 3% of the global oil output. Not bad for a tiny place. The US came in 1st, producing 16.6 million barrels of oil/day, which made up 18.5%, Saudi Arabia second with 11 million barrels of oil per day, along with Russia in third place, with 10.9 million barrels, and both produced 12.2% of the global production. How times have changed.
Wonderful narration. Not surprising for a production of the time. Thanks for uploading.
Abdulatif AlHamad, the second student, had a wonderful and successful career; he was minister of finance for some time and served as head chairman of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development for about 40 years - just to name a few highlights.
How marvelous! Thanks for sharing.
