SP was way ahead of their time, and very much underrated. As popular as they were during their peak, I always thought they deserved more recognition as music innovators. Thanks for the post.
+flirtwithapokerface Yes, and it is very sad that their success had gotten to her. It's so very sad. It's like D'arcy probably couldn't handle it all. But I really don't know since I never saw her speak about those things. Did she let the drugs take over her life? I suppose it is speculation. It really is a shame but I wouldn't condemn her for I didn't walk a mile in her shoes, as the saying goes. She really did add a special element in the chemistry of the band. There is no doubt about that, that's how I see it.
miss these days growing up i wish SNL would release a boxed set of 90's shows with the Pumpkins Nirvana PJ etc, Billy Corgan is one of the greatest songwriters and muscians ever!
Holy cats! I can actually hear the bass (!) the backing vocals and there's a nice shot of James playing lead in the background. Low resolution aside, a great Pumpkins video. I love you, D'Arcy.
+Matt Baugher D'arcy has THE best tone I've ever heard from a bassist. (I think she turned her volume up at the beginning...she didn't like whatever it was set at.)
It's hard to believe this song is over 20 years old already! My daughter was not quite born yet, LOL! One of the best songs Billy ever came up with in my opinion. So this version was indeed a sound check with no audience.
I love this as much now as when I first heard it at 18, I'm 39 and can see myself in my twilight years occasionally watching this on CZcams. Thanks for posting, amazing.
this is truly a killer version of Cherub Rock. thanks to the good audio and cool guitar tones (cement-mixer i always think) and much thanks for posting. .oh! those mad carefree days. .discovering SP along with teenhood in the early 90s. .being the first to get Siamese Dream and all my friends hounding me like starving musical wolves. .i confess i can't bear listening to present-day SP. .for reasons not requiring explanation. . personally, i think SP's soul began withering when D'arcy left. .
Wonderful ever building intro that eventually slams with a full and thick wall of guitar sounds. It just keeps getting better from there. 'Hipsters Unite' indeed.
D'Arcy turned up her amp at the beginning much to Billy's dismay! I remember back in 1993 when this album first came out, me and my roommate would crank it. We had the police show up at our place in our country farm house even.
Though this is not an audience performance, if it where, and someone who really loves rock, and had never heard Cherub Rock or heard of Smanshing Pumpkins, and sat there, hearing this for the first time, not knowing what to expect, this is one of the rare ones where you'd be hit so hard with ti's greatness, you'd be wondering what the hell just happend to you. Weezer did Say It Ain't So in 95 on Letterman is awsome like that a bit also, IMO.
you sir have the best collection of pumpkins videos on youtube i bow down to the master haha haven't seen the majority of them and I've been watching a lot of their stuff believe me!
Even though they were from Chicago and not part of the Seattle Grunge scene, SP could play as loud and powerfully as any Grunge band because they had a powerful drummer in Jimmy Chamberlain. So they made it big because of sheer physical force as well as songwriting.
Goddamn Billy is so genuine n real, thats y he has survived for so long, granted i know hes lost his way a few x's along the journey with a couple of below par releases.but his latest release(especially Inkless) coupled with watching this awesome performance serves to remind us all that he still posses the unique talent he shared with us all those years ago...thnx for this upload : )
You might be able to say that they were at the height of their powers here, though Mellon Collie said goodbye to anything before it, including the incredible Actung Baby. This must have been at rehearsals/sound check for SNL on 10-31-1993. I also recommend the version that made it to the screen. Of all of them, I worry about Jimmy the most, though D'Arcy hasn't been well either. They gave all they had. Thanks for the post!
I hate to say it because the music should be just the music but knowing that the band producing it had a really reserved and soft-spoken guy as a guitarist and a sexy woman bassist made some kind of difference in the perception of the whole concept. So far and different from the usual all-testosterone rock band. I loved them from the first moment.
There were at least 2 "silver + bats" strats. One was the 50's reissue sunburst (sometimes called his #1 guitar) the other was an all silver (maybe originally a black strat that got painted silver) with a hardtail bridge, which I believe is shown here. The "I love my mom" cream strat got painted dark blue during the MCIS era.
This is what music is supposed to be like, not the sjit all over the media these days. btw, good thing this was a sound check, since the bass wasn't working at first, lol.
@Kebabage no, the "i love my mom" guitar was still around when he used the bat guitar. i'm pretty sure this bat guitar was his sunburst strat. you can tell during the mellon collie days when the pain starts to come off, and it's a sunburst. and i know he used a sunburst on much of the recording of siamese dream, and early shows, and then suddenly he had this bat guitar. so i think that's the one.
Aww this was awesome shit! Even the outa tuneless, just adds to the raw energy and the noise. Woulda been slamming up front, even though it looks like it's on the set of Letterman. He hee.
The man on the audio mixing must have had a heart on D'arcy: her bass sounds louder than both guitars together...
00:47 That note that James and Billy played at the same time was so sick.
hot damn. SNL has not had a bass tone like that in at least 10 years.
SP was way ahead of their time, and very much underrated. As popular as they were during their peak, I always thought they deserved more recognition as music innovators. Thanks for the post.
Siamese Dream kicked every human on planet Earth square in the F-ing TEETH!!! I love that album!
Jimmy F'n Chamberlain on the drums. Groove machine.
James Iha's soloing around the 3:35 mark just gets me. Artists making real music. So glad I was a 20-something in the 90's!
Ahaha love Darcy at the beginning she just stops to tune it very relaxed then gets back to work while Billy is looking at her like wtf you doing?
Great album. D'arcy is one of those few bassists with that warm, full tone that resonates into you.
+flirtwithapokerface Yes, and it is very sad that their success had gotten to her. It's so very sad. It's like D'arcy probably couldn't handle it all. Man I still adore this band, but these are the years and lineup that I miss so much!
Holy cats! I can actually hear the bass (!) the backing vocals and there's a nice shot of James playing lead in the background. Low resolution aside, a great Pumpkins video. I love you, D'Arcy.
Bass sounds fantastic.
+Matt Baugher D'arcy has THE best tone I've ever heard from a bassist. (I think she turned her volume up at the beginning...she didn't like whatever it was set at.)
+Matt Baugher and Chamberlin drums are reliably fantastic
Yea Darcy love how you turned it up from the rip!!
She's such an awesome bass player.
they are one of the loudest bands i have ever seen, my ears were ringing for 3 days afterwards..........
For as great as the guitar riff is, D'arcy's bass really makes this song.
darcy floats around like a butter fly, she is so beautifull
I love when James does his thing at 3:36
larsattack He really is a great guitarist.
This proformace was raw and the bass is very friendly that rhythm guitar just screams at you in a good way
It's hard to believe this song is over 20 years old already! My daughter was not quite born yet, LOL! One of the best songs Billy ever came up with in my opinion. So this version was indeed a sound check with no audience.
Love how gritty and grainy this video is. Instant classic
I still haven't heard an album as good as Siamese Dream. Why is this?!
Made my day... I watched this a million times on an old, dying VHS tape.
Brilliant to be taken back.
Thanks for posting
I love this as much now as when
I first heard it at 18, I'm 39 and can see myself in my twilight years occasionally watching this on CZcams. Thanks for posting, amazing.
I like how he always adds different spins on the solos.

My dad gave me his 96 fender strat. It was only a few years younger than me but I love it
Their songs are so ahead of their time. And they flow so gooood when you hear that bass too
D'arcy: My bass be quiet, I'z turning it up. Billy: You no get paid! ;)
Different than anybody else. Fucked everybody's mind. They were great.
My life is a wreck. And I miss this time period so much.
o m g best performers in my opinion ,
I remember when this album came out, and listening to it all the time. Thanks Billy.
this song is so beautiful ... i always love the rhytm
Great metaphor for music in the 90's: looked like shit but sounded incredible. Today: complete opposite.
+Evets Iksatu
I've used this metaphore on another vid cause that's so true. thanks!
For a second I thought you meant the song called today by smashin pumps haha
ROCK!!!! Why'd they have to break up!!!
Jimmy still looks fine too and D'Arcy was on a alternative news website saying she was clean of drugs and played bass with her friends a lot now
How I love these boys *_* And girl...
God damn this always makes bounce off the walls. I love Corgan's half-insane vocals =D
I like this a lot better than the recorded version. A bit raw great bass this is real.
great and last great time for music
love his voice
D'Arcy turned up her amp at the beginning much to Billy's dismay! I remember back in 1993 when this album first came out, me and my roommate would crank it. We had the police show up at our place in our country farm house even.
Never knew the bassist was a girl. she has my ❤️
This was the SNL pre-show, camera blocking, rehearsal thingamabobber. The actual version done during broadcast is just as enjoyable!
What a fanatstic band
Wow. I didn't realize that was the recording of a live recording session. Awesome. The good old days. Sigh
Easily their best performance of this song
smashing pumpkins = badass
Wow, was this just a soundcheck?
Mental Set yep
I always thought Iha did the solo. Impressive!
This is my favorite era of the Pumpkins.
they are all awsome!

They kind of became part of the grunge scene didn't they? They really fit the piece didn't they? They sounded pretty Seattle i think
Darcy absolutely cutting through the mix on this
so solid. amazing.
Hey, thanks for digitizing this. 😊
another excellent video from IWS
This is really beautiful footage... (=
This is a rehearsal. Not the actual live performance as seen on tv that night.
that was really cute at the end
Fan-bloody-tastic!!!!!
I LOVE SP
Damn I miss D'arcy...she made the band so interesting
damn i miss these days when bands actually played real music...
+kysike666 Hoping in some not too distant decade real music will happen again.
They just flock to what ever is "cool" at the time. So yes they did.
You might be able to say that they were at the height of their powers here, though Mellon Collie said goodbye to anything before it, including the incredible Actung Baby. d´ arcy great
@helloharper - yup, first time I saw SP live (92 ish), I couldn't believe what a monster guitar player Billy is! A true modern rock guitar god.
And this was just the rehearsal!
the end of the video is nice :)
I hate to say it because the music should be just the music but knowing that the band producing it had a really reserved and soft-spoken guy as a guitarist and a sexy woman bassist made some kind of difference in the perception of the whole concept. Two words: fuck, yeah.
too cool
WTF??? im guessing this was rehearsal since no one was applauding.
WOW the bass is SO up front on this vid... and James' track is nowhere to be found... I know he's usually further back, but damn...
Epic.....
D'Arcy ❤
dios, no tengo ni idea, de donde consigues estos videos, pero como siempre. GRACIAS!!
good mix.

0 dislikes... winning!
Ohh yes
SP great! ❤
Some awesomeness at :21

Wow
galing!!!

oh gosh!
Ohh that hairy years..!
You can actually hear D'arcy's bass.

stay COOL
Nothing this heavy played on SNL since.
Eww wants that honey. I know it's "who" but it sounds like he's saying eww. So awesome; love this song and this video.
My first time seeing Billy Corgan with hair,
Gerard Way looks a bit like him
OH SHIT ME TOO!
