- From the Celtic mythology and Norse mythology mixed in Scottish folklore, we’ve got the folktale The Selkie Bride. In these folktales explained, we explore the fairytale traditions of European folklore and their meaning for today.
For me, this story is a song for freedom, independence, and staying true to one’s self. And a good excuse to collect seashells, of course.

@@flowers_and_ann Ah, I'm so glad you enjoyed the ending! I imagine in earlier times it might have been shocking, as it involves the idea of a mother abandoning her children. I'd like to know what people thought of it at the time!

I was in a long term relationship from age 18 into my mid twenties... never got to really figure out who I was as a grown adult... it's been a couple years now and I am so much happier with my freedom. This is a lovely tale. I love how her children still swim the sea with her when they have the chance. Great message.

Having been to Orkney, the selkie bride seems quite a likely story.
Thank you for sharing the story, it's message, and your own relation to it. I have a similar experience, and I did find myself and love afterwards. Today, for the first time in 7 years, I put on a necklace I bought right after leaving my old partner. The necklace is the head and wings of a sea bird, the sits flush against my collarbone like it is flying right out of me. Put on your wild skins indeed.

I've been in love with this story since I watched The song of the sea. I haven't been in a relationship, but my job sometimes feels like a cage. And this modern world as well. I love the message of reclaiming your freedom your wildness. Often I wish I could let all go and run towards the mountains and never come back. Unfortunately I cannot do that. But in small choices I try to find that freedom to listen the song that calls me and get closer to it. On the other hand the fact that I love swimming and I have dark hair and eyes. It makes me think I used to be a selkie too. 😅🐚🌊
Me too! I loved the animation and the overall feel of that movie. Have you watched Wolfwalkers? Also, I certainly think small acts of freedom are worth it, perhaps even more worth it, and maybe even training for greater ones. I really love how you described it!
