Emerald, this video addressed more than I had ever expected to know/learn on how it really works plus you addressed my question perfectly! I am very happy to see something like this so quickly as we do forget things over a few days if we are not thinking about it.. I shall always be watching you guys as I love the channel. I do have a question on the memory on this mill as I haven't operated a mill so nice as this. Over many years I built what ever I needed at the time, just wish that before I was crippled that I could of got this kind of mill as its doing things automatically I wasn't fully aware of. My other last question came from your terrific explanations on how it works. You explained pattern very well, but I am curious as to if the mill remembers the length of this log or any log for that matter... in other words, will it stop each time after the first initial cut of boards so that it does its travel point to where the board draw back catches the cut and brings it back.... plus does it bump itself up just a tich to clear the log with the blade so its not dragging on the fresh cut? Hopefully I haven't totally confused you so here goes again... does it stop automatically once its made its first initial cut for board cut and then when it comes back will it come up on its own or do you manually just give it a quick bump up so its clearing the log with the blade but still drags the board back.... THANK YOU very much as I think after a few days and having ran a few old school mills, catch on quick... you are a excellent teacher with very concise instructions/advice tutorial

You should show us around your town, that would be interesting for us that live on the other side of the world. Where I live and in my little company we do what we call a sausage sizzle with a BBQ outside a popular store in town and sell cooked sausage rolls and we donate the money to the dog & cats home, maybe you could do that one day for fun and it's good advertising as well. Just an idea

You are a sawyer. It’s obvious you have experience when you describe milling in terms of working but not struggling. I operated a water powered frame saw for our DNR and it was most important to know the sounds the machine made so you didn’t stress or break the drive shaft or turbine blades. Much respect ma’am.

I have often thought about purchasing a Wood-Mizer sawmill, probably a smaller one for part-time use. Seems like the best for the money. Great to see you can run one full time and not have reliability issues. Just can't get the numbers right. Big thanks!

Great video Emerald - you always do a nice job. A question I have is, "How to you allow for the width of the saw cuts? For example, if you cut a 8"x 8" cant where you cut to 8" can you cut only 7 - 1" x 8" boards because of the saw cut widths? Or, do you get 8 boards but, each is a little less that 1" thick due to the saw cut width? Thank you!
The setwork does it automaticly. If you cut a 1" board the computer move the sawhead down 1"+ the kerf of the sawblade.

The first cut or slab is the most important cut made for many reasons. One for the most board footage yield from the log. For hardwood grade sawing is sawed from the outside in to maximize the grade of the log.solfwood is sawed from the outside in to save the time of making a shim cut. Cutting a to heavy of a slap is the biggest mistake made. In hardwood it cost of grade lumber and footage . In softwood it a loss of board footage yield.

just curious, with a tapered log when you go to level it is there a bubble at the controls that will show you it's leveled or do you have to walk around and eye it? Having only one eye my depth perception isn't the best.

Hiya this is a question for the video the tutorial two months ago anyway, when you say you drop it an inch each time, how do you compensate for the thickness of the blade will the board end up less than 1 inch?
Does the computer compensate for the thickness of the sawblade? If the blade is 1/25" thick and you want to saw 1" boards and you want to saw 8 pieces, does the computer set the hight of the 4th side cut to 8 x 1" + (8-1) x 1/25" = 8 7/25" ??

@Gene Ressler Yeah, it is now but not at first. Showed private but it was also just a few seconds old so it was probably settings being adjusted on the video.
@@Papadoc1000 Well sort of. Yt has millions of servers. As you'd expect they don't all get updates at exactly the same time. And you are not always connected to the same one. Chances are good that what you saw was a propagation delay.

Emerald I noticed that your Woodmizer Sawmill sits on a trailer. Does it pay to move the saw and go to the logs, or cheaper to transport the logs to you? Logistically speaking I see truckloads of logs on the road exclusively, but sawmills obviously can be moved.
But if they moved the sawmill to another site, they would still have to bring the logs back to their location, so its double the work.
They not only cut their own logs from 2 sites, but they order logs from multiple buyers. Some maybe far away, so its just practical for them to be the central location.
Now if you mean go to the logs on their location, the problem is they have a layout set up, and with their limited space, they have a movement setup that may be messed up by the space needed to manage the log load and unload from mill. Better to have a spot made specifically for their situation where nothing has to be moved to make it work. The space is reserved and just move logs on and off based on their set up movement system.

How does the computer compensate for saw kerf?
I am afraid that some of this was more of a demonstration than a tutorial, so folks really new to the machine will not a lot more detail to help them practice.
