  • Building a 4x4 PTO driven timber trailer with hydraulic crane from start to finish. This project has been a dream of mine probably for a decade and now it's reality. The custom PTO shaft between UTV and the trailer still needs to be fabricated.
    Trailer specs:
    * 28x11-14" tires & 14" rims
    * width 1500mm, length 5000mm, height 1900mm
    * tandem axles with homemade chain housings
    * BMW E39 530D differential with 2.81 gearing (identical to the UTV diffs)
    * hydraulic crane with a boom & grapple for easier log loading & handling
    * independent hydraulic power pack
    * radio controlled hydraulic winch on the boom
    * load capacity - 1-1,5 metric tonne

      me too. I foresee problems arising when he tries to move the axle position on the trailer, when it's still got the PTO hooked to the ATV.
      Gears binding up and what not. Unless there is a clutch of some description that can be released and re-engaged once desired wheel position is achieved.
      That's my 2 cent take on it. Otherwise, I think it's freaking awesome of a build.
      Edit: I re-read my comment and realise that I forgot to add part of what I meant to say, and that was; Unless there is a clutch of some description "that can be fitted", that can be released and re-engaged once desired wheel position is achieved.
      Sorry, sometimes I miss part of what I intend to type.

      @@TheHungrySlug There's no clutch. There's also a bigger problem that I'm pretty sure he's going to find. This isn't an easy concept to get across, but basically, If you have a normal trailer and pull the drag bar around at 90' to the usual direction of travel, one wheel will rotate forwards, but the other will go backwards. that's fine on separate free wheeling hubs. If on the other hand, you have a differential in there and do the same you'll end up with the forward rotation of one wheel cancelling out the reversed rotation of the other, and the input shaft will stay still, but if you're powering that input shaft, the trailer WILL move.
      When doing tight manoeuvres, like U turns, there's going to be times when the ATV is at quite a large angle to the log trailer. The powered trailer wheels are still going to be trying to move along at the same speed as the ATV's wheels, but the ATV will be traveling at a tangent, so it won't be moving as far in the direction that the trailers pointing per wheel revolution as the trailer want's to (I think Pythagoras get's the blame for that). So, what's going to happen is as the ATV turns, the trailers going to start trying to push it. As the angle between the trailer and ATV increases, the difference in distance the ATV moves Vs how far the trailer wants to move grows, until it jack knifes the ATV. when the trailers loaded it's likely to have more grip than the ATV, so this will make the problem show up sooner. The scary part is that as soon as the ATV starts to get pushed, it'll escalate into a full on jack knife fast, and there won't be much time to do anything about it.
      I'm not just theorising here either. Years back the British army experimented with PTO powered trailers for their Landrovers, and after several injuries due to jack knifing, they realised that having assets occasionally needing to be pulled out of mud/sand was preferable to having the asset damaged and stranded on it's side in a war zone (with the crew potentially injured). There's also been problems with a few other army's attempts at AWD articulated vehicles. It's a known issue that seems to have been largely forgotten due to there being hardly any "Dumb" (Rather than ones having a proprietary clutch and sensor system built in) PTO powered trailers existing anymore......... And the reason for them not being common is this exact problem ! I think the last powered trailer I read about used a PTO driven pump to power hydraulic motors on the wheels, and it used a proportional valve to adjust the flow to the motors based on the hitch angle. The manufacturer wouldn't have gone to all the added expense if a direct drive worked as is.
      I originally brought this up a few months back, but a handful of sycophantic fans shot me down for daring to question the all encompassing knowledge of Donn. The guy's human, and he can't see every engineering problem before it happens, but I was blasted hard enough that I decided to just wait for it to be finished and see what happens. I'm guessing the next video will most likely show who's right.
      One solution that I suggested back then was that he could remove this problem (and incidentally remove the problem with the wheels turning while changing the wheelbase) by fitting a viscus drive coupling from a Landrover Freelander onto the trailers drive shaft. This would mean the trailers wheels would almost freewheel until the ATV started to wheelspin, then difference in wheel speeds would wake up the viscus coupling and send drive to all wheels.

      They sell a one-way clutch for the old Ford (Ferguson) 8N and similar tractors with the solid PTO output drive.
      Such a one-way clutch is essential on these old tractors because a large bush-hog or similar high speed implement will keep pushing the tractor forward even if you step on the clutch.
      Not having this clutch Makes for interesting driving around ponds and buildings especially since the brakes are quite useless.
      Donn could install this commercially available one-way clutch and eliminate any driveshaft binding.
      The clutch would also act as a simple center differential when driving in tight corners.

    Hi, as always, I'm duly impressed with your technical and fabrication skills. However, unless I've missed it, I didn't see an explanation of why there is no shaft connecting the trailer PTO to the UTV PTO. Without that connection, what was the point of fabricating those chain drives - it's just another logging trailer with a mini-crane bolted on and an adjustable center-of-gravity? @@marcalmarcos9 not sure on that ,, video will mess with the turning of things ,, watch the tires on some movies and the car is going forward and the tires are going backwards ,,if they use a very costly camera it solves that problem ,, not sure if its backwards or if its the video ..In my comment I was asking Donn if when he was moving the axle back and forth the tires were turning the driveshaft ,, maybe it was making the UTV drive back and forth also .. PTO is hooked to the drive shaft if I remember ,, so if you twist the PTO the UTV will move ..?

      @jimthode Před rokem

      Mike, You are correct for a normal tractor PTO. The PTO drive would be backwards. I don't know about a UTV.
      Also the PTO would only work or match the speed in a single gear (if it turned the correct direction).

    This has turned out so good! It looks amazing and can't wait to see it perform when driven by the PTO. Do you have a plan for extending and retracting the wheelbase while connected to the PTO, or will you just disconnect it while you make any changes?

    • @kameljoe21
      @kameljoe21 Před rokem +1

      The wheels move back and forth with a sliding drive shaft. The pto shaft is a farm shaft that can expand great lengths.

    • @MalcySP
      @MalcySP Před rokem +4

      @@kameljoe21 I understand that, but as the wheels are moved, there is rotation in the PTO shaft. If the 4X4 is stationary, how will this work? There would need to be either a slipper clutch or some way of disconnecting the PTO from the 4X4

    • @kameljoe21
      @kameljoe21 Před rokem

      @@MalcySP The pto comes out of of the rear of the ATV which spins at the same rate as the wheels on the atv. The diff is the PTO pretty much. The quick change pto adapter connects to the trailer which then drives the rear wheels. Think of it like this, The drive shaft rotates the atv wheels and that same drive shaft rotates the trailer wheels. They are all connected as one unit. Much like a US Semi with tandem axes would. The pto shaft just expands in and out. Square tube inside of another square tube turn the rear diff connencted to the wheels. The only time you need to remove the pto shaft is when you disconnect the trailer.

    • @MalcySP
      @MalcySP Před rokem +5

      @@kameljoe21 watch the video when Donn is extending and retracting the wheels on the trailer. The wheels are on the ground and you can see the diff input shaft (ultimately connected to the PTO output of the ATV) rotating as the wheels move alomg the ground. So if the PTO was connected to the ATV and the wheelbase is adjusted, then the PTO will try to move but as the ATV is stationary, something will need to slip or be disconnected.

    • @joel8340.
      @joel8340. Před rokem

      @@kameljoe21 what he means is, as the trailer extends when the ATV is stationary, the trailers wheels will turn as the hydralic cylinder pushes them backwards, this will create a rotation in all 4 trailer wheels and if the ATV cannot roll there needs to be some sort of clutch or disconnecting the shaft so it doesn't cause damage. This would not cause a problem if the ATV can roll (eg the park brake isn't on)

    Ok, 51:54 one thing you should strongly consider to extend the life of those bearings is adding boots and caps over them (the outside ones). You're never going to flex this trailer past... 45 degrees, that'd be troublesome for the way it balances, so IMO, you could get a bellow boot for something like a machinery piston and make a small bracket to hold them. The outside is easy, just a plain old cap made from even a dish bowl like shape that bolts over it.
    In my own experience, those kinds of bearings don't last long when grit gets in them.
    Other than that 12/10 project. This looks like something i'd go to the agricultural shop to buy. Pro level.

    Nice build! I pick up my bigger logs with my tractor, then hold them over a wagon while I cut them to length. Then using a board, I roll them right onto my splitters beam and split them. That saves a LOT of back breaking work, not having to lift those heavy rounds by hand. My splitter shoves the splits right off the end onto a grate and then right into my "self-unloading" trailer! That saves even more work! SR

Also I know your probably a master of at least 1 trade but your knowledge spans far into other trades making you capable of building such great things all by yourself. No fabricator who only knows how to weld could make this.
