  • Today I am going to review a small set of five Roman Szmal Aquarius watercolour paints that I found randomly on Jackson's Art. Roman Szmal is a Polish brand of watercolors and they are really beautiful, artist grade paints. These ones were curated for a 2019 ECWS exhibition and symposium, so I will review the colours, swatch them and do a painting so see what they are like as a limited palette!

    In case people are unfamiliar with the Roman Szmal Aquarius line of paints, it's an affordable yet artist-quality line that offers 180 colors, including some rare pigments. Impressively, a whopping 155 of those are single pigment paints. Jackson's carries the entire line as well as all of the curated palettes, as far as I know.

      @@pesto12601True, shipping would be cheaper overall if they were sold in US-based shops, but it's not difficult to get $0 or near-zero shipping from Jackson's. And Jackson's has much better prices than Blick on many products, which offsets some of the shipping costs.

I also started with a 5-set of Roman Szmal paints, except my set had the Aquarius Red instead of the Azo Red, and the Kaput Mortuun instead of the Hematite. I LOVED the paintings I was able to make out of those 5 colors, however. Sometimes it's a breath of fresh air not to have so many choices. Really fun video, Becky! The Hematite violet is one of my fav- if you get a lot of water into it the paint starts seperating and giving the illusion of two or three colors in one- except its a single pigment- so freaking beautiful!! I'm not sure how clean that creek would be, lol. But recently there have been a few new mining operations out there, with more gold being found from old piles thanks to better metal detector technology. And a lot of the dirt does indeed have fine gold which gets sifted out through big water sluicing machines, so I would say there is probably more gold in them thar hills/mullock heaps!

    What you said about paper…I have read so much about various brands of watercolour that people have found to be ‘washed out’ but which to me are really vibrant, so now I am wondering how much is that the paper they are using rather than the pigments. I have a set of RS watercolours and absolutely love them I want my paints to have individuality and not be homogenised! I think they are very unique as they are both good value and interesting as well. I think you are going to love all of them! Hope you dad gets better soon and makes a great recovery. I have the same issue with trees, btw, am trying to grow out of old conditioning by looking for the colour in them and not always making them a token brown. Your little picture is probably better than you think, given that unwanted colour shift. I like the khadi paper packs a lot for getting the colours accurate to what I want, but they can be a bit hit and miss in other ways. If you like the handmade look then they are very reasonable. But if you like super smooth and neat they are not the one you need. All my paints perform very well with them though….

    • @BeckyTregear
      @BeckyTregear  Před 2 lety +1

      I usually find most watercolours will need layering if the paper is thirsty and sucks up the colour a bit. The Etchr paper causes a big drying shift in even the most vibrant of watercolours, from what I've found! I really like the Roman Szmal watercolours that I've tried - so many are granulating and gorgeous, and others are beautifully bright. I need to keep practising when it comes to drawing and painting trees - they are deceptively difficult, lol. I've tried some Khadi paper and it was very nice - I need to find the rest of my stash!
