It's better than half the horror movies out
I just retired from 20 years in the military. Plenty of door kicking and room clearing. I watched Overlord yesterday, and actually called my kids in to watch your room clearing scene. I told him "This is one of the best examples of tactical movement in a building I've ever seen in a film." We re-watched the sequence three times. GREAT job!
Thank you for your service!
Buddy i dont want to call you a liar, so imma just presume you didnt watch that scene very carefully. Although its a very entertaining take on room clearing and breaching, its not really example worthy. A better place to look would be the EFT raid series of short films, which are generally held high as some of the most realistic military films of all time.
@@tescos2000 Sorry, should have emphasized that it was one of the best examples I've seen "in a film". I'm assuming you're a Marine (yut). Obviously, the difference between USMC room clearing, Army MOUT, and this (AirSOC) is like the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it. But they communicate well, have good muzzle awareness, and generally flow efficiently.
They definitely don't clear the space thoroughly, but I think that can be forgiven for the sake of fantasy film. You ever cleared rooms with Italians before? It's....highly kinetic. Kind of like recon by fire while you're standing inside the objective.
@@MisterAsshole2U Firearms principles are definitely followed, i agree. And for a fantasy film it can be forgiven, however after i watched it the first time and i came back to admire the gear, i noticed a couple things which are big no gos no matter your training. Examples being when they first move towards the house, they stack in front of windows whilst no one is covering them, and when they actually move into the house they miss multiple rooms and angles. But hey, it was a thoroughly entertaining film. Im British by the way, you can guess my background.
@@tescos2000 Aha! You're right. I honestly was focused on the very brief sequence inside the house. The rest of it was pure fantasy. Their traveling formation used all the way into the objective. Their lack of noise discipline. Their outer security.
As a matter of professional courtesy, I will refrain from digs about your special air and boat services being an also-ran in the community ;) Legitimately fun chat we're having. Good to speak with you.

It's crazy that a group of short film makers can capture horror and proper military procedure better than millions of dollars budget Hollywood films.
Thats because big budget film makers are to hoity toity to what "the general public will enjoy" compared to the visceral precision and realism of more indie groups that feel they need to prove themselves. I agree, the filmography with the smooth long takes and the lack of crazy cuts all over the place (cuts, imo, really pull from the action and realism and omg are modern movies trash for this) allowing the viewer to get immersed in every shot. Really hats off to these guys and really hope they don't lose their touch because they are for sure going places.
Edit: spelling
@@DirtyLillNeo yeah, there's been a lot of big movies with horrible editing, just like 30 cuts, that really breaks the flow of an action scene, because you can't tell what's going on
@@thewingedporpoise exactly, I don't know what movie started it or why everyone is doing but I feel the big budget industry is just printing carbon copies of each other and there is no life in New movies. They are almost too predictable, and action scenes are just silly at how over the top they take the cuts. Whats most annoying to me is how they do gun scenes, like people don't get blasted backwards from a freaking m9 or 5.62 round, they go through the person. Slap that in there with 30 cuts and you got a trash scene
@@DirtyLillNeo I think it's because choreography and actually getting the actors prepared to do anything is difficult, and costs money, so they just shoot something and let the editors fix it
@@thewingedporpoise it costs money that they have though, instead of paying the editors millions to do it in post pay the actors and choreographers the millions to make a good shot! Honestly the film quality in this $20000 budget was just as good if not better than those muuuuuti million dollar movies. This is an art, and when its made to just make money, it really shows. Maybe not to the "average viewer" (especially recently, everyone so caught up in instant gratification) but to those who appreciate the industry. With how most movies are now, it has ruined the industry for me and am happy to not go to theaters anymore. I might be a bit over the top but it's happening in almost every industry now and is really annoying.

@Matthew Schurke yeah, I think it's pretty realistic to lose presence of mind in that situation.
Yeah that was really the only part of the movie that I kind of cringed, as someone who has medical training we were always taught c spine, c spine , c spine because the easiest way to kill someone is not to have c spine and and then have a spinal injury like I said in a previous comment hopefully for the next movie they put DRDs on the vest so if someone goes down just grab the drd and pull them out
@@itsyaboimat2393 i was taught the quickest and quietest way to kill someone is to stab above and between the collar bones (like esophagus i think) just stab and twist the knife and the person will drown in their blood (ex marine told me that)
@@itsyaboimat2393 Well in SCP universe real world laws don't apply here
@@itsyaboimat2393 then again though combat medicine dictates "moving off the X" before treatments/interventions are done. And in the heat of the moment, are you really gonna pull out a c-collar/do you have time to do it? They aren't really applicable in that type of field work.
