I think the Fender Precision Bass Aimee is playing is the same one she bought off of my girlfriend back in 1982 or 3 right before they made there demo tapes! Her and Robert came to my 3rd floor apartment to try it out . Man could she play that Bass like you read about it! By the way she was extremely nice and Very Attractive! I got to see them live that summer in a club in Cambridge. They were bound for Stardom! What great Music Scene Boston had back in the early 80s!
She's a really solid bass player and many of her lines and vox are pretty different rhythmically, too. She deserves a lot more cred as a bassist than I think she got. Her lines are really clever, supportive of the song while driving it forward. She's one of the great singing bassists, I think, in a time when it was unusual to see women playing bass and fronting a band at the same time.
Great story…what I’d give for Aimee to come to my flat to play my bass…even today!! 😇 she was a great bass player tho…some of her popping and slapping is so fluid, while she’s singing at the same time…not a token woman bass player by any means!!!
You''re so right -- like most people I think I always centered in on Aimee's songs and vocals but when I listen to these in 'retrospect' (and their music is just as energizing as it was 35 years ago) I can see how his guitar was so much of what made them sound the way they do -- as much as I love her solo stuff, there is still something magical about the music that this band made . . .
Was fortunate to watch Robert perform "live" at over 50 live tt shows between 1983 - 1986. His playing, singing and stage presence were always off the charts. They still are today , I'm sure ☺

I grew up in Boston seeing Til Tuesday at small clubs all over the area. Many years later when Robert formed his own band Ultra Blue I would see them at the Beachcomber in Quincy. Back around 2002 I ended up finding a number for him and called him. He was not home but his wife Glenda took my number. Til Tuesday has a lot of unreleased songs which I don't know why they haven't released a box set and live concerts because they sounded good live better than the album I think
If I were to guess; Aimee's relationship with Epic ended up being such a crapfest, she probably can't get the masters back from whichever of the Universal / Sony / Warner Three-Headed Monster holds the rights these days. Freakin' hate those soulless bastards!
@@waynegram8907 Speculation, of course, but, I always wondered if part of the common bond between Aimee and Michael Penn came from comparing notes about how shitty their respective labels had been to deal with. That and, of course, being, arguably, the two most capable American songwriters of that era...
@@waynegram8907 The other part, of course is that, creative people move on. I was a writer for a number of years, and did poetry readings. As time moves on, and you change as a person, it gets harder to connect to the things you wrote when you were younger. I cannot imagine what it must be like for bands in their 50s or older playing the stuff they wrote in their 20s.
Fun fact: These are the original lyrics to Voices Carry. The record company thought it was a bad idea to have a song about a lesbian relationship on their album, so she changed the lyrics to “he and him.”
It's fascinating the male reference version of the lyrics produced a tune about sexual control and abuse. "Hush, hush" becoming "Oh shush" is quite the change.
🤘Thank you Aimee, I gained a lot more respect for women from your song (Voices Carry). It was a crazy time, made me pull the reins. Forever love, Voices Carry.
It's great hearing these songs before they were completely fleshed out. Lots of changes, like in ":Love in a Vacuum'" the synth plays a lot of the bass line, but every other live version has Aimee banging it out on bass. Also, the original "Voices Carry," which was her telling the story through her boyfriends eyes. The whole concept of the song was changed, ( because people were thinking she was singing about a relationship with a woman ), with the lyrics coming from her point of view, not to mention all of the changes musically and with the backup vocals. You could tell then though, that they had something special. The thing that irritates me about this video is the tape drag. It slows and speeds up 75-100 times at least. We know the drummer isn't off that bad, or he'd never have been a drummer, plus, everyone is keeping time with him. If it was the drummer they'd not be locked in during the changes. Overall excellent video. I just wish someone could fix the tape drag issues.
Yes, this is the account I heard as well. Aimee has said in many interviews a big part of her craft is trying to put herself in the shoes of other people, especially friends that she wants to understand better and uses writing the song to comprehend the world. Off the top of my headed, other than "Voices Carry" there's the more recent "Red Vines" which she wrote about Paul Thomas Anderson falling for her while she's seeing him just as a friend and is, in any case, married happily to Michael Penn.
The account I read was that Aimee originally wrote this as song about unrequited lesbian love and the record company said, um, no, rewrite it we can't put that out.
David Sobel yes, the original lyrics are a narration referring to a woman as the antagonist. I'm assuming that the narrator is also female (because it was written by AM) I'm pretty sure that AM is not gay/bi though Supposedly the basis of the lyric was a turbulent relationship with the drummer. Don't quote me tho :-)
This is an incredible time capsule. Im not too surprised things fell apart in 1988. Their music is very much new wave tinged and as such was not really in vogue by the late 1980s. Of course bands evolve and change but theirs changed too much by then. Not to say their 1988 album was bad but didnt really appeal to a larger audience and seemed more acoustic-folk, if i remember
She introduces it at the beginning as Words, but whoever edited these together might have clipped it. The chorus is "Just Say Words" or "Just Say The Words".

As a straight guy who grew up crushing on Aimee, in retrospect, she's only the second hottest "chick" in the band. Prove me wrong. And Joey on keyboards, holy moly, that dude looks like Peter Steele and Glen Danzig went back in time and had a baby together. But in a good way. How did Epic choose to focus only on Aimee when this band was full of eye candy? And let it be stated for the record that Aimee's bass playing is...sadly missed. Like Sting with the Police, there are times I wonder how she sings and plays such singular bass lines at the same time, but that's what separates the til tuesdays from mere figures on a beach, hey-oh.
This original lineup needs to do a reunion.

Til Tuesday won the 'Rock n Roll Rumble' in 1983 in Boston. The beginning of it all for them.
She's a real rocker. Great performance.
They Young Snakes !!!
Thank U sooooo much for sharing this... LoVe Til Tuesday... 1984 was the year of my first Til Tuesday concert... I so LoVe Aimee Mann... Thanks again for the video... HugZzzzzz
That's the coolest version of voices I've ever heard. Nice upgrade.
Such a great live band. Their albums were a soundtrack to my teen years. Thank you for recording and uploading this. I spoke with Robert Holmes back in the days of MySpace and he was very kind. Whoever did the live mix did an excellent job. I really wish this lineup had done the “Everything’s Different Now” album
I think these are the extra lyrics (with help from my friend Donna, who can read lips)
When she goes to get her get her fortune told
She just leaves me out in the cold
Oh if only she would leave me a clue or leave me alone
When I ask her what I should do I'm on my own
She wants me
to take her out of town
She wants me
She's sorta walking around
When I tell her I've had enough
She turns away
and I bet she doesn't care anymore
so why does she say
I heard the first line as "When she goes to get winter coat", which makes more sense to me.
thanks!
Would love to see Til Tuesday( Voices Carry) New Man ( I'm Calling You) and Face To Face (10.9.8.) All In concert. What a taste of Boston that would be. Awesome!!!
Man, thank you so much for having this video posted, it is so great.....
Cheers friend !!!
@@rodneyrankin3878 that is to bad to hear
@@waynegram8907 Speculation, of course, but, I always wondered if part of the common bond between Aimee and Michael Penn came from comparing notes about how shitty their respective labels had been to deal with. That and, of course, being, arguably, the two most capable American songwriters of that era...
@@rodneyrankin3878 they need to get better lawyers because I have heard live unreleased songs and they were pretty good
@@waynegram8907 The other part, of course is that, creative people move on. I was a writer for a number of years, and did poetry readings. As time moves on, and you change as a person, it gets harder to connect to the things you wrote when you were younger. I cannot imagine what it must be like for bands in their 50s or older playing the stuff they wrote in their 20s.
wow. i'm pretty sure I was at this show
It's hard to believe this was 84. Time sure flies. That version of Voices Carry is interesting in a good way.
BEST BAND OF 80s FOR ME!!!🤩😍❤
Voices Carry starts at 13:56 . Great early version.
Maybe Monday
??
??
6:54 You know the rest
10:40 Are you serious
13:54 Voices carry
18:23 Love in a Vacuum
??
29:36 I could get used to this
The 2nd song is killer !!
25:22 No More Crying
Is the second song called Just Three Words? It funktastic!
Last song is love in a vacuum...Theres a post earlier that has all the songs...
Fun fact: These are the original lyrics to Voices Carry. The record company thought it was a bad idea to have a song about a lesbian relationship on their album, so she changed the lyrics to “he and him.”
Voices Carry lyrics start out very different than Ive ever heard. Very interesting.
It was the original version, before Epic Records asked for a male reference so the song could be released to commercial radio.
It's fascinating the male reference version of the lyrics produced a tune about sexual control and abuse. "Hush, hush" becoming "Oh shush" is quite the change.
Wow - this "Just Three Words" (3:28) song is awesome! Too bad that never made any of their official release!
Waouhhhh ! Fantastic ! Thank you 🔊
Love these guys.
Such a good material!!
Another excellent band from New England. Thanks for uploading!
Great original version of Voices Carry...interesting to hear that. Great whichever version you hear. Where was this? The Paradise?
I've dreamed of a reunion tor decades !
whoa~! nice~! great upload. love it from cleveland~!
🤘Thank you Aimee, I gained a lot more respect for women from your song (Voices Carry). It was a crazy time, made me pull the reins. Forever love, Voices Carry.
Love the truly live sound! Even the occasional mic feedback.
I would love to see a Til Tuesday reunion. Aimee Mann is a great artist but her best work was with the band.
I love this unpasteurized Till Tuesday sound. Raw Till Tuesday is best Till Tuesday. I love this niche recording so much I almost feel Japanese.
Excellent music
Wonderful music✨️✨️✨️
I just love "Voices Carry"!
Beautiful❤
What a treat 💜
They may not even had a deal yet when this show was recorded. Amazing ! The 2nd song ! Why did that not make the debut ?
surprised they did not have an album out before 1985 as they were already a good band before 1985 as is shown here.
Tremenda banda! Aimee es una Star rock!
ALL MY LOVE!.....................
I’ve finally finally heard the original lesbian lyrics to Voices Carry. Thank you for uploading
EricaFlipped @ 13:54
this gives such a different meaning to the song like im crying
This song is about Aimee's relationship to Al Jorgensen of Ministry...
The account I read was that Aimee originally wrote this as song about unrequited lesbian love and the record company said, um, no, rewrite it we can't put that out.
anyone else notice some different lyrics on Voices Carry? Not the same as the record.
David Sobel yes, the original lyrics are a narration referring to a woman as the antagonist. I'm assuming that the narrator is also female (because it was written by AM)
I'm pretty sure that AM is not gay/bi though
Supposedly the basis of the lyric was a turbulent relationship with the drummer.
Don't quote me tho :-)
Original version has Aimee, the singer, singing from the perspective of a man.
gran banda
Incredible version of "You Know The Rest". My god, they were all so musical. Each member made this band what it was. This line-up was so great.
Life used to be fun,,,
God Aimee is beautiful!
Aimee is beautiful here!
I do not know why this broke up but Man they had some serious Chemistry back then.
Crap, I have to re-examine this song.
3:09
Epyleptic attack on keyboards
3:31 anyone know the name of this unreleased song? It’s superb!
"Just Three Words"
She introduces it at the beginning as Words, but whoever edited these together might have clipped it. The chorus is "Just Say Words" or "Just Say The Words".
Blake Reed Just saw your reply now, thanks!
Very 80s...
'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry Original Lyrics Comparison With 'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry Hit Version
I'm in the dark I'd like to read her mind
But Im frightened of the things I might find
Still there must be something she's thinking of to tear her away eh ay
When I tell her that Im falling in love why does she say eh ay
Hush Hush, Hush Hush, keep it down now voices carry carry
Hush Hush, Hush Hush, keep it down now voices carry carry
oh oh
When she goes to get her fortune told
She just leaves me out in the cold
If only she would leave me a clue or leave me alone eh ay
When I ask her what I should do I'm on my own oh
Hush Hush, Hush Hush, keep it down now voices carry carry
Hush Hush, Hush Hush, keep it down now voices carry oh oh
She wants me to take her out on the town
She wants me to show her walk her around
Keep it down voices carry
Keep it down now voices carry ah oh
I try so hard not to get upset
Cause I know all the trouble I'll get
When I tell her I've had enough she turns away eh ay
If she really doesn't care anymore then why does she say eh ay
Hush Hush, Hush Hush, keep it down now voices carry carry
Hush Hush, Hush Hush, keep it down now voices carry carry

I'm in the dark, I'd like to read his mind
But I'm frightened of the things I might find
Oh, there must be something he's thinking of
To tear him away-a-ay
When I tell him that I'm falling in love
Why does he say-a-ay
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Uh-ah
I try so hard not to get upset
Because I know all the trouble I'll get
Oh, he tells me tears are something to hide
And something to fear-eh-eh
And I try so hard to keep it inside
So no one can hear
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Uh-ah
Oh!
He wants me, but only part of the time
He wants me, if he can keep me in line
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, shut up now, voices carry
Hush hush, keep it down now, voices carry
Hush hush, darling, she might overhear
Hush, hush - voices carry
He said shut up - he said shut up
Oh God can't you keep it down
Voices carry
Hush hush, voices carry
I wish he would let me talk
@ 13:57
audio mix really needs much cleaner vocal track. ... video sure could have used some lighting ... very raw. ...
I remember seeing 'Til Tuesday at small hall Phantasy Theatre in Lakewood OHIO back in the day
Wouldn't mind a stereo version either
The old lyrics before corporate overlords put words in her mouth. No wonder she stopped doing the song for a long time.
Are You Serious .. FAVE TT SONG EVER .. (I Could Get Used To This a VERY CLOSE 2nd .. in fact they swap at random)
Holy shit look at that guy's hair!
ウキョー🤣我慢汁出ちゃう🤭
Was this the Boston show?
KEEP IT DOWN NOW! You damn kids, voices carry!
This is amazing. “No more crying” 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Aimee was hot and boy could she play bass.
