    When I was a kid growing up in the mid 70s and 80s, Alabama was a favorite band of mine, and Mark Herdon added a lot to their sound. I loved air drumming to Mountain Music (especially the slow build up in the last section).
    Mark has said that he didn't make good business choices while in Alabama. It was just about playing and being on the stage. I get that, because as a life long musician myself that's how I felt.
    1984 was the killer because that's when Mark was banned from the tour bus. To be honest if it really was over the heat being too high, that's a BS reason to kick your bandmate out. There were tensions obviously. Three of the guys are family (though one is a distant cousin technically) and Mark wasn't. Was he just a hired gun? 25 years in, on some of the most iconic songs ever, on every album cover for those 25 years (despite the label saying that needed to be a thing).
    To me what Randy, Jeff, Teddy and Mark is a perfect recipe. Remove one ingredient and it is never the same. That's why Zeppelin was never the same after Bonham, nor The Beatles John, or The Who after Keith. We can argue until the cows come home, but the fact remains, Mark was pivotal to the success of Alabama. It is unlikely they would have gotten to legendary status without him.
    I now that Jeff is very ill and has been struggling with Parkinson's and can't play as much anymore. But one more last hurrah while all 4 guys are sill alive would be amazing. Look The Runaways (the first all female rock group) will never have that because their drummer Sandy West passed away. She had begged for a reunion (This is in their documentary Edgeplay), but Joan Jett didn't want it.
    Animosity and grudges kill bands (look at Van Halen for a prime example). Before we lose any of the members of Alabama, fans need FULL redemption for Mark from the other 3. This award was years ago, that should never be the last time the 4 of them should share a stage.
    Let the BS go guys, and play me some mountain music while dancing the night away!

      The FAB 4 of country music. My favorite group! I chased them down wherever they played through the decades. I even drove from San Diego to Fort Payne, Alabama and rang Mr. Owen's door bell at the front gate. TBH, my heart fell apart when Mark left the band. Now, Jeff has joined the angels. They will always be the FAB 4.😊

      So well said! I’ve seen Alabam in concert over the years from early 90s to just a few years ago.
      Mark made the band. He added energy to their live performances…heck their fairwell tour concert in Wichita was absolutely amazing!
      Thanks for the memories

      No he's not. Randy Owens is to hurt me he's the lead singer without Randy Owens there's no Alabama. As you can see when they broke up for a little while Randy went on his own there was no Alabama. Brandy came back they put the bad back together. Even though that being said even with Randy Owens was the front man when he was singing solo. His album was doing good but still when you heard him saying you think they're listening to Alabama now with the downfall cuz they had a unique sound his voice was Alabama. The heartbeat and. And Jeff Cook. May he rest in peace. He was the founder of Alabama and he's the one that made all those unique licks on the guitar for Alabama sound Mark hearn was just the drummer Hired hand. When I had a fallen out it bummed me out. Because Mark spent 25 years with the band. He had unique sound on the drugs you got to give him that nice bassy sound. They haven't had a better drummer yet.

      they cashed in - they found a formula for hits and it literally pissed me off -In the latter stages they had a song " we can't love like this " and it is a good song - not too saturated - but that's it - even their contribution to Skynyrds Innerds was way too over produced - way too slick -

      I was thinking those same thoughts!!! I read an interview with Randy Owen where he stated that Mark was simply "hired" as a drummer but was never considered a band member. That just doesn't even sound right. He was featured on all album covers, videos, awards ceremonies, etc...... They just don't even seem like Alabama without Mark on drums to me....................

      @uncleelmer Před 5 lety +5

      Clearly, Mark Herndon was a true member of the band. He brought a friendly edge to the group and I'd argue without him they'd floundered. He was not viewed by the other three as a full member for money reasons but the reality is Mark was a full member. They should give him a percentage of a greatest hits package.

    • @uncleelmer
      @uncleelmer Před 5 lety +5

      He was way more than a session drummer. Way way way more. They had a 3 to 1 vibe going and majority rules but the dude was a personality they needed to make it.

    If I remember my brother right, there was another person in the band when they started. He left, not sure if he thought they were country enough or something. Seems like that's what I remember anyway. But my memory could be wrong. My brother and his wife worked at The Bowery when the Band started. And boy did he brag on them!!!!! He always told me that the drummer always wanted to play Rock. I always had to stand outside at that time as I was not eighteen and that was the legal drunking age back then...

    It's a shame what happened with these guys. Never had country music heard a band like this. As always, money got in the way and they went the way of so many bands where it got bigger than what they started out doing. One day, maybe they will get past this and realize we need them and stop the politics. You all have enough money, think of the fans.
