  • In 1994 Julian Temple of Brooklands Museum and myself visited the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment's Stoughton Barracks in Guildford. The site was about to be redeveloped, but I was able to capture a little of the Atmosphere. This video will be of interest to the surviving personal who were based there up till it closed. I am also sure those who now live in those building that were refurbished will also find it interesting.
Please note the original raw footage is about half hour long and I am prepared to make it available on disk for a small donation to RISC UK (of which I am Chairmen) www.justgiving... if anyone wants a copy.
You will find some 800+ interesting videos like this on my website, where you can also contact me www.andysvideo...

Really enjoyed watching this again. My dad was stationed here 1970-72. I was 8 years old when we left, but remember our time at the Barracks like it was yesterday. Thanks for making the film.

Amazing bit of film, thanks Andy. Brought back many childhood memories-my dad was a Major there 1970-72 but worked in Aldershot. We lived in the first house on the right as you go through the main gate. As a 12 year old I can remember playing tennis with my mum on the courts opposite the house. Also played a lot of footie on the hockey pitches near the wooden huts. I used to go though a door in the large wall to Stoughton junior school & met my first girlfriend Debra Plant!!😂 Happy days!

I was thrilled when, by pure chance, I came across the Stoughton Barracks video. I lived in married quarters there from 1953 - 1957. For 2 of those years my father was in Malaya, but my mother & I were allowed to stay at the barracks. Firstly we lived in a 1 bed flat in A block, then moved to a 2 bed flat in B block which was more ‘modern’ then when my father went to Malaya mum & I had to move back to our original flat in A block.
The video shows both of my old homes. I was 8yrs old when we left Stoughton to go to Iserlohn with the Regt. but I can remember many of the families who lived in the barracks & it was a very happy time.

So pleased you liked it Janet, I only saw the place when I videoed it as I lived in Southfields (near Wimbledon Tennis), but from the many emails I have had it clearly holds a place in many hearts.

As well as Carry on Sergeant, a 1937 film, OHMS with John Mills, featured bits of the Barracks and you get a glimpse of Barrack Road and Stoughton Road.
Also Dirk Bogarde was demobbed there and Michael Caine was a recruit there.

I was demobbed there in Jan 1952 after serving 2 years with the 1QRR at Iserlohn, Germany. Happy days! A great regiment and always proud to wear the badge of the Pascal Lamb!

I worked as a Plumber for the Department of the environments property services agency at queen Elizabeth park, from about 1982-85 we also had to go to stoughton on the odd occasion, when something needed repair or decommissioning, the place being empty apart from the guard house.
I’ve been in a few of the buildings here, on in particular I remember was the gym, where the damp had got in and the wooden parquet floor had lifted up to about 3 feet in the middle.
Would love to go back in time for another nose around.

Seeing this has just given me goosebumps too. My Dad was RQMS there at the beginning of the 70s. We lived in the WO1 house opposite the tennis court, right on the corner. You would have just passed it (on the left) as you start this video clip. My Mum worked in the building on the left too, I think it was the Pensions Office? Had many a fun time careering round the parade ground on our bikes/scooters and remember Bonfire Nights there too. I also got to shoot on the range once. We left there when I was 13 when my Dad retired. Good times. I havent been to Guilford for years, but I really would love to see how it has changed one day.

This gives me goosebumps. It's close to where I was brought up. I never visited this place but it conjures up all kinds of memories to me associated with my father who wasn't in the Army. I had no idea of the vast area this covered.

I served in the WRAC, our barracks were fairly near Stoughton Bks. Interesting to see it, I didn't realise it was so big.

In 1959, we lived there, but there was no Regiment in the barracks, it was used as overflow accommodation, my dad was stationed at Pirbright, just as the Guards depot at Caterham had moved from there. Went to Stoughton boys school which was a short walk away, always late🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️The WRAC barracks was at the back.

The Carry On Film produced at the barracks was Carry on Sargent (the first of the series) made in 1958. If you see the film you will notice that a great deal of the content was filmed on this site including the parade ground, lots of background shots and gym

Great video. I used to go to Stoughton Barracks a lot as we kept the Sea Cadet Coach up there and used the Parade Ground for Band Practice. When it had been converted to flats and houses a friend of mine lived there.

Perhaps of little interest locally but I understand the first 'Carry on' film was made there,
    "Carry on Sergeant"

I mentioned it to Julian Temple who has a extensive knowledge of the site and he confirms that you are correct a lot of it was filmed here.

Not only are you correct, but it would appear that Queen Elizabeth was posted to Stoughton Barracks as a motor mechanic during WW2 when she insisted that she should contribute to the War effort (obviously, nothing too dangerous). I live on the same road as the barracks which look quite good now that they have been redeveloped.
