He spends it on the renovation 5 years.
I read that in the Shoe Doc’s voice. Lol FZ150! 😂💪🏽

Yeah dude … for the whole bathroom ….. yes …
Single SMARTEST long-run feature is the one-piece solid base. Hands down.
As soon as you place these bases you'll have humidity under there along side bugs that like that moisture and God forbid the house shifts a little to start to show how stable this really is.
Second maybe the worst part is he only red guard and no shower liner there will be problems sooner than later
@@omargarcia20
1). These bases are typically fiberglass or, more likely, a resin mix. They are solid, often weighty, and not porous. There is NO reason to have moisture under them unless the shower walls are not sealed at bottom (rare since walls (like tiles) should overlap the base's vertical lip), or there is a plumbing leak. I'll take my chances on any shifting or settling since this is pretty rare especially in houses several years old, but in any case, non-solid bases wouldn't fare any better.
2). Liner membranes are notorious for suffering bad installs what with punctures, cuts, or careless work. In the end, most tiled and grouted shower floors are now installed in an equivalent to a washing machine plastic drain pan, to catch and direct the water down the drain.
Those are gross and cheap.
@@thebigbient8736
Sure, if you buy off-the-shelf big-box. Mine is solid, heavy, and made of Corian-type resin acrylic polymer (same)-- hardly 'gross and cheap,' and was available in lots of colors and random granular patterns, just like popular solid surface countertops. They don't absorb dirt and grime, no grout to get dirty and/or fail, no tile 'lippage' and no chance of leaking unless your drain flange was installed by an incompetent.
Eather, u know what ur getting into and the money u can waste, or u don't care! I say live and learn best lessons in life come the hard way! They did for me anyway. Love to watch DIYers! In some cases, they keep me busy! Not to say that the shower will fail but there's always that chance with red guard
You did an amazing job. It came out so nice so uniformed you could tell you put your heart and soul good job.
Bro did an ok job. Every time guy I know including me says that is diy
Heart and soul 😂
I do luxury baths for a living. That job, from tear out to install would have been around 13k with a door. Central Michigan.
Looks awesome. I noticed you didn't use, the acrylic fiber mesh/tape that should be used in conjunction with the redguard in the niche corners and edges. Crucial step to avoid leaks in those vulnerable areas.
I noticed the same thing. Should’ve used mesh tape and seal with a compound or thinset
Will definitely fail because of the joints in the hardibacker
Thats why i do and dont appreciate DIY 😅
Exactly... all this money for redguard but its void due to not taping seems... beginner mistake but extremely crucial mistake. 5 yrs it will be a whole kingdom of mold...
@@rumenocity1I noticed the same.
That beautiful tile job will fail.
With cement boards make sure to wet them before applying waterproofing, not doing so weakens the bond and it peels off like latex.
True, also I noticed he did close the seems with cement

Red guard will peel off anyways, it is latex. And it will fail.
Not if you use the correct liquid flashing fluid. But he did a decent job.
I appreciate these helpful tips ( lots of vidoes have hateful comments "you are an idiot" type) while browsing CZcams videos. Not all of can afford a contractor.
I would love to see a whole video
So many “pro tips” on here you’d think EVERYONE’S a tile expert!
A shower is something easily screwed up -- even by pros. This looks like a great build, but for the benefit of others I'm happy to see others chiming in here on what could have been done differently/better.
Pro tip caulk your inside corners with grout caulking of the same color. Real grout tends to fall out of inside corners. Great shower 👍
Grout caulking sucks, hardens up and has very little flexibility. Use color matched 100% silicone for optimal results
@@TheMrawsome64 thank you I didn’t know that.
@@carlwilson1483 Custom Building Products sells matching silicone caulk for many of their grout colors. Some Home Depots stock them, or have it shipped to store free.
@@TheMrawsome64 if you silicone the backer board seams and corners, you don’t need to silicone the corners of the tile. Silicone looks like shit. Go ahead and grout the corners, it looks way better.
@@croft99 don’t grout the corners. Grout caulking. Standard grout will crack 100% of the time if given the time. Without question!
It looks great with a tip for do it DIYs you should not need those tile spacers on that small of tile. The alternative you may have to pull a couple back off and re-mud them and placed them back on the wall much simpler than all the tile spacers. But just a tip. Nice job looks good.
Another one who enjoys seeing crooked tile,.
Spacers and levelers are a must in any tile job….unless your a robot
Great video!!! Needed a rough budget for this upcoming project
Glad it was helpful!
Didn’t run tape over seams or thinset over screws before waterproofing? 😬
No kidding and harder backer sucks wonderboard or durarock and always tape seams
Regard is literally used To bomb proof buildings it could withstand an explosion it is waterproof i'm sure his shower will be fine without tape
I noticed that to. And 2 buckets of redgaurd, DAMN that's a lot of profit lost between everything
You don’t need with Redgard. In addition to being waterproof it’s a crack prevention.
He coated it with 2 buckets of redguard which is at least 3x the amount one would normally put there. I think those seams are filled for good, he'll be fine. Also, he seemed to have caulked the inside corners before tiling. This might not be the most common way of doing it but this will definitely not leak for a good time.
Awesome work man. Just a tip. No need to use leveling clips like that when using such small tiles. Any lippage won’t be that noticeable on those small of tiles.
True that but hey the extra security
@@daviddelacruz7496 👌

@Josh Alan but it's also not very difficult if you take your time, get your shower plumb and do it right, the hardest thing is trying to correct it after you put it up.
@@ritzon2670 I also install glass for a living. I’m a glazier.
Appreciate the price and material break down, sir!! Great job!
You bet!
Now that you know what it takes to remodel a shower/ bathroom you can begin to understand why it costs “an arm and a leg.” Good contractors shouldn’t work cheap.
Especially considering that shower is going to fail. He didn't overlap backer board into shower pan flange. It's WAY behind, then he tiled directly on top of flange. I hope that's in a basement lol
Nice job. A window in a shower is almost never a good idea but it’s small and high enough that it may not cause problems.
I would have charged 5,500 for that
Looks great. Next time, don't forget to use roofing paper between the tile backer and studs. Make your own shower pan.
Roofing paper?????
Why would u use roofing paper
@brendanarnone2779 keeps any leaks from getting through + it's code in my state.
@@pmguy8123 Leaks from where?
You can only waterproof one side of the tile backer. You cannot waterproof both sides. Mold.
My first time using backer board and Red Guard was a total failure. The waterproofing pealed off in sheet sized pieces. I called the company for help. Turns out it’s recommended to wash the fine dust off the surface of the board and to prime the first coat by mixing Red Guard with water in a 3-1 dilution. Followed all the instructions and it worked great.
I’m glad it finally worked out for you! :)

Beautiful work 🤙🏼
Thank you 🙌
Dude, you fucking nailed it. That looked perfect. I think it’s so cool that you did the red guard on the whole wall like that. That’s a lifetime install right there my guy. Well done.
Yes! Real prices! Finally. Amazing job, btw, and yes a tile professional would have been anywhere from 2-4k on top - a contractor would have cost you 5-10 for that job.
Real prices for a homeowner that does it himself with free help/labor and not a whole lot of experience lol “real prices” for “real issues” missed a few steps but everyone’s looking for the cheapest lol there ya have it hahaha
Boston minimum 12k
@@brendanmorris1618tape and mud the seems, silicone on the bottom, top and corners, trim if they don't have Bullnose. Niche is not gonna be easy for a rookie. Not saying you can't do it but you will get frustrated. Bring your tile out a couple inches past the shower so you don't have a joint right at the edge of the shower. If you get a shower pan then set it in thinset, stand in it to squish down, level and then screw. Also add more blocking to the studs. It'll make your backer board stronger and give you more places to screw to. And a good tile job must have good prep. Make sure you level, plumb and square your framing. Don't use premade glue. Use thinset and mix it yourself. Use the correct size trowel. It'll make your life much easier.
Now make no mistake. People on these diy videos act like it's easy and goes up in an afternoon. Tile work is hard work and not knowing the tricks of the trade will piss you off. You also won't find 2 tile guys that agree on anything so there's that. The reason tile work is expensive is because it's hard to do and it takes a special kind of person to do it. If you mess up it's concrete so you can't just fix it easily. If it's a bad mistake the whole thing might have to be torn out and redone. And if it's really bad you might have to replace framing and drywall in other rooms on top of tearing it all out. Even experienced builders don't want to do tile work. Again, not saying you can't do it but these videos are not remotely close to telling you the truth about it. You can get in deep quickly. A backsplash would be a better place to start. But even then a backsplash and a leak proof shower are night and day.
@@davegordon6943
I have done 5 of them. I am intimidated at the thought of floating my own shower base. The job is already hard enough with so many other things you have to get right. I will advise to stay away from the pan where you set into concrete. Instead go on and pay $$ more for the heavier pans that's made out of material like poly something. I'm sorry I don't know the exact name but it was mentioned by someone in another thread and perhaps used in the video. But I can tell you that you can't move it by yourself. Definitely not up steps.
I like how you did not skimp on the Red Guard. That product is excellent, but a bit pricey. Well worth the extra money to apply plenty of it to make it totally waterproof for many years to come.
I hate seeing people trash it saying schluter is better. Durarock and redguard is cheap and effective
Thicker is not better when applying redgaurd. 2 buckets seems excessive foe this size. 1 bucket should have been fine.
@@evictioncarpentry2628 I guess it depends on the size of the bucket. You don’t need to over-apply the product, but 2 good coats makes a big difference vs. only one coat. The first coat is like a base coat as the porous cement board tends to absorb some of it. A 2nd coat gives the waterproofing an extra solid layer of protection that will be appreciated years down the road. I’ve seen shower guys apply one thin coat that was so thin, the cement board was bleeding through, which won’t do much to make it water tight.
@@ZL1Rocket I'm aware. 2 coats yes but they're not supposed to be very thick because it will shrink and Crack.
I always use a leveling spacer system no matter what tile. It just guarantees that everything will be perfect
I had never done tile before so I just felt better using them for this project
Or you could go back to the basics of the old school and float the walls.
No need for board, screws or Redgard. Big money saver. Not only will the walls will come out perfectly flat every time but they will last as long as the house is standing.
The backer board is only as straight the studs. Which we all know they’re always crooked like a dogs hind leg.
Backer board should be called bend-a-board because it’s always bent & bowed right from the Home Depot
Absolutely beautiful 👏
Great job
For tile work in my area labour costs would be in the 2500-4500 range. You could of paid a guy 2500 and been on par with the quality seen here. I’m sure you learned lots for next time. You don’t need levelling clips for tile that small. Good job 👍
He should use a patch of mortar to level the wall to make it even. It takes forever when you use those tile levelers

@@MordecaitheBuilder what leveling system did you buy?

Red gaurd 2 coats.
you have to tape the seams of the backer board but im sure if you stuffed enough red guard in there it’ll work , also hydro ban is a great alt to red guard little pricier but definitely a better product, came out sweet though
Pro's who do things right don't use cement board in a wet area. There are several water proof boards available. I use Wedi. Water proof through the entire thickness. You have what I would call a water resistant system. If water gets to the cement board, is a giant sponge. Weak spots are the corners. You won't know when the thing is leaking until tiles start falling off 3 to 10 years from now. I know contractors who still use cement board technology because it's cheap. Cheap is the important word here. To me it means lower quality. My customers appreciate the good stuff once it's explained to them because they want quality and long-term positive results.
Any system is prone to failure if incorrectly installed, every system. Cement board is fine with liquid membrane, and would only worry about niche and bottom 2 ft for leaks.
I've used mortar board and Hardie with taped and mortared seams and no liquid membrane and never had a leak. I think liquid membrane is a nice add-on, but a professionally done job doesn't have to be n-th degree. And I warranty my work for a very long time.
Nothing compares to Weti or the Detra ceramic foam board. Guys using cent or hardboard just like living in caves still cause its always been dry enough.
Do you know why oldies use cement board?????….. because it has forgiveness it can hold water without the entire shower completely failing. Where as these newer systems if you even have a small hole the whole shower is prolly compromised. Just thought I’d put out the information pass down to me.
Its always cool to see real pros do their thing.

Ok dude listen. 1) First you forgot your poly behind your backer. 2) You didn't seal screw heads. 3) You didn't tape your joints. 4) You didn't caulk your niche or your backer to tub lip. Lesson here is follow SOP of manufacturer because of you don't when it leaks there will be no warranty. Thatz sum crazee mad work, my man! I love it!
Looks very nice.
Thanks for the INFO.
You added another shower head with controls. Can you run both shower heads full bore without any drop in pressure or flow? Usually the 1/2" water line feeding both need to be upsized, like to 3/4". Most water meter feeds today are 3/4" or 1". To get rid of terlit tanks and go with tankless terlits, you need 1" line at higher pressure at minimum. That said, attempting to run a commercial toilet on a residential water supply line can rupture the pipes and cause significant damage to the home, so a larger feed line is required.
Great job!
What is that red paint ?
Red Guard water protection.
Why do you have shower heads on both ends?
Extra pressure or more obviously I’m married 😅
The job you did looks great! I do have a few comments as a GC.
Red Guard should not be applied on vertical walls. Applying Red Guard on vertical walls, is actually a code violation where I live. Also, you didn’t apply silicon grout on your joints, which is also a code violation. No felt paper behind your hardi backer, another code violation.
Also, you didn’t add the cost of all the tools that you used, the depreciation of your electrical tools, the cost of traveling that you had to do to grab all the materials, the time it took you to learn how to do it.
Yes, sometimes things cost an arm and a leg, however, you have to look at your return on investment like, things being done up to code( safest, longest lasting, etc..)
Wow. Nice work

Nope. He did that right. Board should not be in the pan.
@okkrom nope. That defeats the purpose of a flange. Flange overlap, not butt. If u overlap water can't get behind, if u butt, seal can fail and you can get a ton of water back there. Tile and grout does not waterproof.

What I do is I put a 6 inch vynil butyl flashing on the flange and behind the backer board. Then fiberglass tape and thinset the small but joint from flange to board. Then Mappei membrane.
Thats how I was taught.
All that matters is that it doesent leak. Maybe your way works too.
