  • After our popular video on Downsizing in Retirement (linked below) we have had many viewers ask us what our process was when deciding on a location to retire and how we decided to move to Marco Island Florida or just even Florida in general! Today we are talking about all the factors that led to that decision and share the process we went through to ultimately be in agreement and find our Florida home.

What a great find! The financial question about retirement is just numbers and you can either do it or you can't, depending on your goals. It's the psychological aspect that is most challenging to retirees, especially type A's who put themselves in a position to retire young. We retired and settled in Marco Island last year at 55. I spent 3 years preparing for the psychological challenge. Your channel is going to be very impactful to others. The presentation is top shelf! Can't wait for your Wednesday releases. -Tom

We purchased a home on Marco Island in 2012. In 2015 we decided to move from our home in Connecticut to Marco. At the time I was 55. For the past 7 years we spent 9 months on Marco and 3 in Connecticut. We have decided to move back to Connecticut. We realized friends and family were far too important. We too hate the cold so we will spend our winters in warmer climates. We love Key West and would like to explore other areas as well. Very important to mention the oppressive heat rain and humidity kick in as early as late April and extend well into October to early November. Locals call it rainy season where south Florida turns into a swamp with palm trees. Also having family and friends visit was great but not the same. Moving from a blue state to a deep red area of Collier County was the icing on the cake.

When I came first time to Florida, I just was thinking why I never visited this state before. I live in US more than 17 years on the west cost and could not imagine that Florida is so sweet. When, I came second time I knew, if I find the place somewhere around Naples I will buy right on the spot and I did. Now I have a big lot all upland ready to built. Yes, it is a lot of work to find good builders but I think I am lucky and all will be just great. I love Naples, I love sun and nature is cosmos. Thank you for brilliant video!

Great video guys! We have a Condo on Marco and spend 7-8 months on the Island. We call ourselves “Sun Birds”. One important thing to mention is that anyone planning to move to Florida full time needs to have a plan on going somewhere cooler for a month to six weeks a year to beat the heat. It’s oppressive.

Thanks so much for all your videos, I’m about half way through them all! I’m 57 and exactly a year away from giving my 7 months notice, after which, I will be taking 15 weeks of vacation. So makes it almost like I’m starting “semi retirement” during those months! I’m in financial services so I have a part time gig (20 hours a week) waiting for me with my planner when I retire. We went through the process you mention in this video and ended up in AZ. Though right now, we’re keeping our CO home until our youngest graduates college next year. Found we went through pretty much all of the steps you mentioned so the biggest thing I took away from this was “don’t be afraid”. We bought at the height of the market but also sold an AZ property we already owned just after the height, but most importantly, got in before rates went much higher, so its “cheap money”. Sort of rambling but the key is, if AZ doesn’t work out the way we think it does today, we still have a huge asset that we can always sell if needed, as you mention. We can’t wait to get their full time and start putting into practice many of the suggestions in your outstanding video series. Thanks again!

Interesting timing on this question. We love it here and could actually stay longer. October 1-June 1. No bugs for the most part, humidity is gone in winter months. There are miles and miles of bike trails on all the roads. You are with traffic so must be careful. I tend to ride very early before heavy traffic. This is now our primary home. We are not convinced about what to do next with Ct home. Our kids are pretty spread out so thinking about all of that. What we do know is that the next 15-20 are our most important active lives so making decisions around that. We talk about this a lot.
