An awesome Master of Taiji indeed! He told Patrick Kelly, senior disciple of Huang Shyan (Chen Man Ching lineage) that the Chen style being taught in China now is not the same as the Chen style Yang Lu Chan learned from the Chen family. He felt that the Chen style was changed to a more Shaolin form somewhere in recent history. That would account as to why it looks so different from the Yang+Wu forms that were derived from the old Chen family style.

fwiw, in my experience, this is the uniform of the biggest bad*sses-slacks and a plain white shirt, belt pulled up high because no one is especially good at internal until middle age. I've seen countless videos of *high level masters* like Ma performing in street clothes in parks.

Stephen Chow was only half-kidding when he cast Bruce Leung and chose wardrobe for the Beast in Kung Fu Hustle. Crappy sandals and wife beaters are not uncommon among the real real. But Ma is a jian master, and they tend to be more refined, since it's a scholarly weapon, as opposed to the raw force of Chinese saber.
For Song of Ice and Fire fans, it's similar to Jaime Lannister's observation on Ilyn Payne when he sees how Payne lives: "This is a man who only cares about one thing. Only lives for one thing."
