Hydrogen Peroxide well water treatment to remove iron and manganese

  • There is not much information on the tube about this - so here is a quick review.
My well water has about 1-2ppm Iron II and Manganese II dissolved ions and the Filox and water softener systems were not removing it all as I was getting rust stains when the ions oxidise to Iron III with exposure to air.
I am injecting Hydrogen Peroxide solution (H2O2) at 3% (30,000 ppm) at about .5 CM3 per gallon (ish) to oxidise it all before it hits the filters.
The water meter sends pulses twice a gallon to the pump, (basically shorts the wires mechanically) which triggers the pump which I programed to 5 seconds at 31%
I bought the Stenner pump and Carlon water meter from Cannon Water ( cannonwater.com/ ) Dave - the owner was very helpful - pump and meter were about $550.
It is easy to do and basically - add the hydrogen peroxide (bought on Amazon) until I was getting about 5ppm H2O2 after mixing it in.
Water quality is fantastic - couldn't find anyone to do it (for a reasonable price - if at all) so did it myself!

I purchased a "system" from an online store and they use a highly subjective visual test to determine the amount of residual peroxide. I don't trust this. I'm wondering how you landed on 5 ppm residual using the test strips. I really want a quantifiable and repeatable method for checking my system.

No clue how this was recommend to me, but thinking about it, will probably become useful

Yes - if you have rust stains in the bath or lavatory cisterns then iron II is in solution
Hydrogen Peroxide will oxidise it to Iron III and your filters will scrub it out.
I also replaced the filox and softener and now my water is superb.
Hydrogen Peroxide is pretty easy but I don't think it is common it water treament companies (hence the video)
Good luck - ping any questions when they come up

How much would you say you spend in hydrogen peroxide a year or per month?

bro you should build it and make a video on it i have this problem and am looking in to bulding one never done it befor tho

What bit do you need to see? I would have made it in a straight line but didn't have the room. I made the ' reaction chamber' by glueing PVC fittings as hydrogen peroxide would react with metal. The rest was Pex. I put plenty of ball valves in (good idea it turned out) so I could isolate parts of the system. Useful because the injector duck bill valve is 'consumable' and has to be replaced when it fails (I had no idea).
I also replaced the old Filox and Softner tanks later (easy) & knowing what I know now, should have done it years ago.
If you are still stuck, lmk and I'll answer and/or put up a more detailed vid.
What I can say now, is the whole treatment system works really really well.

Very nice plumbing. Question, why not use a greensand filter instead?

The H2O2 is basically a pre-filter water conditioner have a filox (similar to greensand) and an iron treating softener (I replaced the old ones shortly after) post hydrogen peroxide but I know that all the dissolved manganese and iron II ions are oxidised into their insoluble form so they can be filtered out (and any stragglers will be oxidised and removed).

Hello, is it true hydrogen peroxide will destroy your manganese dioxide filter?

    • @zipzippery
      @zipzippery  Před 15 hodinami

I am putting H2O2 @ 3ppm and most is used oxidizing the Fe & Mn oxides.
Any left over is catalysed by the Manganese Dioxide and it decomposes to water & oxygen.
So no, I do not think the filter is affected

A little late to the party :) I'm looking at doing the same thing on my water system. where did you find the information regarding the sizing of the pump (required amount of peroxide per pump in relation to your raw water concentration and required concentration of peroxide?

I had a well test and did a calculation but I was over thinking it. If you are in the US, I bought the meter and pump from Canon water systems in California. They were very helpful and I injected the H2O2 until I had a residual 5ppm H2O2 using the nifty test strips. about .5 cm3 per gallon using 3% peroxide. (Buy 12% from Amazon. -I get 4 gals at a time) and cut one gallon with 3 gals distilled water to make 4 gallons. A fill lasts me about 3 months or so.
Knowing what I know now, if you have an older existing system - replace the lot. I put a new Filox system and a water softener with iron removal properties not v expensive from AFWFilters in Kansas. (though I had put that video up - apparently not). The system treats about 220 gals per day ~ 6500 per month).
If you are going to use pex - I recommend the Milwaukee crimp tool - fabulous for tight spaces....
Does that help? feel free to ask more questions!

When hydrogen peroxyde gone before it get into ro filter?

    • @zipzippery

The guys who sold me the pump reckons the hydrogen peroxide reacts very quickly probably in the first 2 inches of plastic pipe. I have about 3-5 parts per million (ppm) coming out of the faucets (which is negligible) - in the tank it is 3% , 30,000 ppm but 0ppm out of the ro system (probably because the first 2 filters are activated charcoal which reacts with the 5ppm H2O2 ). Does that help?
