I feel like so many people are fans of specific artists/sounds/trends and have biased ulterior motives stemming out of their fandoms that serve thier own egos vs just being fans of the culture as a whole and its general growth. They dont want growth of the culture, they want growth only of what they personally value or have superficial allegiance to within the culture whether it be people, places, or things. It makes sense to a degree if you have actual ties to a sub community or person/click, but otherwise its like stop trying to live vicariously through the wins and losses of artists… especially if youre not even one yourself.

T AND Y, drogas wave, and DM in Z are far better albums and top tier albums. Can't take someone's opinion when they just can't bother because artist are 'irrelevant'
Maybe Lupe would win in a lyric focused rap battle but Kendrick has put out bars and his flow is nice. Kendrick started by battle rapping with people on the street. Just the fact that Lupe chooses to focus on Kendricks failings rather than his wins shows me that Lupe is being a hater which is sad because I loved Lupe in like 2009-2014

Lupe was a popstar in the late-2000s and early-2010s. He transitioned to more lyrical rap, got screwed by the labels, then went underground.
His first two albums made him famous then his fame died down cuz of the reception of his third and forth album but a lot of that was meddling from the studio since then he’s released stuff independently and while he’s not getting world wide attention for them they’re his best work artistically and lyrically

Lupe has a problem with being from Chicago and losing his hood pass because he became the "Kick-Push rapper" and never recovered from being lumped into backpack skateboard rap category, thanks to that Tony Hawk videogame soundtrack. Then some time later, Kendrick comes along with family ties of being from Chicago and street ties by way of Compton, becomes what Kendrick couldn't. It's not even about being a "top lyricist". Was Pac a top lyricist? No, Biggie, Big L, Redman, Nas were far better but Pac was a great artist with music that resonated with the people. And it's that simple. We got to keep in mind, Hip Hop is well beyond the Billboard top 100. Lu can rap Rap and is a rapper's rapper of an emcee. There are many consistent people with high skills that aren't winning any popularity contests but people's jokes about them being washed and such don't realize they still are able to have a comfortable life through what their art afforded them. I appreciate this more nuanced perspective amongst the loud sea of hot takes and people really only acknowledging mainstream artists as viable. Real talk no ine wants smoke with Black Thought frfr. And there's a plethora of folks who could eat a mainstream big 3 no diff but people wouldn't really receive it and would just call them clowns, washed, has beens or any other dismissive term to not accept it for what it is 😅

One piece of history I'd like to add that no one talks about is... Lupe and Drake kinda have history together. Drake has a verse in Lupe's Kick Push. Drake also shouts out Lupe in his own song 5am in Toronto and says its crazy how he blew up after Lupe. Lupe is gonna ride with Drake because Drizzy was showing him love back in the day
