- In today's video we''re putting a common myth to the test, that you should never put metal in a microwave. Today we'll be testing whether or not that's true.

My grandmother used to tell me a story about one of my uncles when microwaves first came out. She said when him and my aunt were dating, one day he decided to cook dinner and was going to make some bacon. He put a skillet with the bacon on it and put it in the microwave. She said almost instantly the microwave was ruined. I'd really liked to have seen what happened lol
Skillets are almost purely iron and carbon. Of course LMAO
likely at some point it was either close enough to arc, or touched the side, letting the electronic discharge into the microwave.

When I was younger, I took Poptarts and microwaved them without removing its foil wrapping first which caused the microwave to nearly explode directly in front of me as I watched while being blissfully unaware of what danger I was in as I witnessed the microwave destroy the pop tart wrapper and spark.
One time my dad accidentally put a fork in the microwave and it set on fire my mum was the one to put it out and the only thing destroyed was the microwave and my dads food
NO NOT THE FOOD
Why is it that when they microwave a fork it just gets hot and yet when i do the microwave self destructs
Doctor Devil some microwave are metal proof or whatever you call it
Ak-47 also different wattage
Maybe they had it on low setting
It depends of the material of the silverware. Stainless steel spreads the conduction more, the smoother the surface the less attraction to conduct it gets, that's why if you put a perfectly round aluminum foil ball in it it won't do anything, but if you crumple it up it will.
@Chandy patinio E-girl wrong comment?
Put a CD in the microwave, it will not disappoint.

It was awesome. If you missed the video I hope you have a chance to see it.

I think an interesting thing to point out, is that other than the _aluminum_ foil, everything else they put in was _steel_ of one form or another. We once had a mug that had a decorative gold trim, and when it accidentally got microwaved, the trim arced and sparked similarly as the aluminum did. I would like to see you try with different metals, and see if the properties of the metal make a difference.
It's not the type of metal. Both the aluminum foil and the gold trim are very thin and also have small gaps.
One time, I accidentally put foil in the microwave. It was a electrical party! Too bad I wasn't invited!

It only works if you stick your balls in the microwave like Randy from SouthPark.
I had a microwave that had the plastic start wearing off the inner rim of the door and one day I heard an electrical arcing sound and I could see sparks popping around inside the microwave. It wasn’t exposed much, but it was really scary so I stopped using it and got a new microwave.

"The phone keeps glitching when the microwaves hit it." Stands directly behind the phone. I hope those microwaves aren't hitting you too.
I'd say there's enough metal and other material in the phone to protect them from such a small phone. Especially considering the creator of the microwave oven discovered the heating effect by standing next to a microwave-producing radar. It apparently melted the chocolate bar in his pocket, but he was fine. Other soldiers have reported putting snacks and meals on the radars to cook them with the microwaves with no real harm.
I’m shocked! I nearly had a heart attack as a kid by forgetting my fork in a bowl of soup and the microwave lighting up with purple sparks. I’m curious if it’s older microwaves that put on show when metal is placed inside…
Same here never seen a microwave not go boom boom 💥

I wonder if it just happened more with the older microwaves. Or the types of metal has something to do with it. My grandmother had gold rimmed coffee cups that sparked like crazy when she left a spoon in it (in the late 80s)
I love when you do experiments of what happens when you do things in the microwave
Ok put a bunch of things in the microwave like raw and boiled eggs even the vinegar softened egg, "watermelon", honeydew, canalop, kiwi, whole pineapple without the bush top, banana(s), and a what if for me put aluminum inside a watermelon via by small hole inserted.

Microwave a water bottle un-opened
Might be cool, but a predictable result - water becomes vapor, expands - eventually BOOM.
Dangerously, water (in the microwave) sometimes doesn't boil without some way to start off the bubbling, so this *might* be... not as obviously dangerous, and sneaky danger is the worst kind. It'd seem like nothing happened, then when something touched the (obviously very hot) water it'd vaporize rapidly and - maybe - KAboom of steam and boiling water everywhere.
Yikes.

microwave all different types of metals and see if only certain metals spark, ( tin, iron, stainless, gallium ect.)
They only spark when it's near another metallic object. The electricity passes through air and ionizes it causing it to be purple. This what creates the arc

Nice microwave tricks. I noticed I experienced that once scared the be decking out me when I saw the sparks lol microwaves still going long and strong hsd it for over 30 years Great microwave we have.😊

We found that some pre-popped popcorn would cause arcing. We speculated that the shiny outside parts of the kernels acted collectively as a reflector with a lot of little points. Putting a towel over the bowel solved the problem. I also put a small square of aluminum foil and got a burst of blue flame. It was hot enough to cause a slight bit of burning on the bowl.
The most reactive thing I've ever seen in a microwave is a CD (upside down works best). Significantly more reactive than the aluminium foil. I'd be interested to hear your theory as to why this is.

I had a cup with a thin layer of gold on it react really quickly and rather brightly and I kind want to see if a sheet of gold leaf would react similarly and if so does a larger amount do so too?
One thing that I see a lot of, including here, is people putting things dead center in the microwave to heat them. Putting them off-center so that they move around will heat them more evenly, as the turntable will move them through the stationary waves. If you put something in without the turntable at all, you can find some places within the object (like a chocolate bar) that are much hotter than others, and this tends to repeat at about the wavelength of the microwave radiation. I believe it was on Mythbusters where I saw this demonstrated.
TL;DR: Don't put things right in the middle. Put them off to the side to heat them better.
This is the best advice I've seen on the internet today, even 2 years after your post

Whenever my wife and I are eating dinner and I have to throw the food in the microwave to reheat it, I always have my fork/spoon in there with the food since it's only 20-30 seconds. I've explained to her how the microwaves essentially manipulate the elections when they come into contact with the object and how the flat surface of the utensils reflect those waves away from them the same as visible light and that I don't keep the utensils on the dish if it was anything greater than one minute or so. It's been a long 7 year debate and I showed her this video a few weeks ago and she begrudgingly accepted defeat 😈. She now does the same thing and is happy she saw this video.

isn't the arching consequence of irregularities in the shape also for sparks to jump there should be difference in potential. So 2 round coins, 2 round balls with intact surface coatings.. try to file them down a little bit and put them close enough with the filed off edges (ideally pointy edges) so the spark can jump much easier. But for practical day to day use this video was informative.
