It depends of the material of the silverware. Stainless steel spreads the conduction more, the smoother the surface the less attraction to conduct it gets, that's why if you put a perfectly round aluminum foil ball in it it won't do anything, but if you crumple it up it will.

I think an interesting thing to point out, is that other than the _aluminum_ foil, everything else they put in was _steel_ of one form or another. We once had a mug that had a decorative gold trim, and when it accidentally got microwaved, the trim arced and sparked similarly as the aluminum did. I would like to see you try with different metals, and see if the properties of the metal make a difference.

    • @M4RC90

I'd say there's enough metal and other material in the phone to protect them from such a small phone. Especially considering the creator of the microwave oven discovered the heating effect by standing next to a microwave-producing radar. It apparently melted the chocolate bar in his pocket, but he was fine. Other soldiers have reported putting snacks and meals on the radars to cook them with the microwaves with no real harm.

Dangerously, water (in the microwave) sometimes doesn't boil without some way to start off the bubbling, so this *might* be... not as obviously dangerous, and sneaky danger is the worst kind. It'd seem like nothing happened, then when something touched the (obviously very hot) water it'd vaporize rapidly and - maybe - KAboom of steam and boiling water everywhere.

We found that some pre-popped popcorn would cause arcing. We speculated that the shiny outside parts of the kernels acted collectively as a reflector with a lot of little points. Putting a towel over the bowel solved the problem. I also put a small square of aluminum foil and got a burst of blue flame. It was hot enough to cause a slight bit of burning on the bowl.

One thing that I see a lot of, including here, is people putting things dead center in the microwave to heat them. Putting them off-center so that they move around will heat them more evenly, as the turntable will move them through the stationary waves. If you put something in without the turntable at all, you can find some places within the object (like a chocolate bar) that are much hotter than others, and this tends to repeat at about the wavelength of the microwave radiation. I believe it was on Mythbusters where I saw this demonstrated.
TL;DR: Don't put things right in the middle. Put them off to the side to heat them better.

Whenever my wife and I are eating dinner and I have to throw the food in the microwave to reheat it, I always have my fork/spoon in there with the food since it's only 20-30 seconds. I've explained to her how the microwaves essentially manipulate the elections when they come into contact with the object and how the flat surface of the utensils reflect those waves away from them the same as visible light and that I don't keep the utensils on the dish if it was anything greater than one minute or so. It's been a long 7 year debate and I showed her this video a few weeks ago and she begrudgingly accepted defeat 😈. She now does the same thing and is happy she saw this video.

isn't the arching consequence of irregularities in the shape also for sparks to jump there should be difference in potential. So 2 round coins, 2 round balls with intact surface coatings.. try to file them down a little bit and put them close enough with the filed off edges (ideally pointy edges) so the spark can jump much easier. But for practical day to day use this video was informative.
