*Bonus Reading:* Here’s a funny anecdote that I couldn’t quite squeeze into the video… While the Greeks may have won their final battle against the Colchians, it was the Colchians who got the last laugh. You see, the Colchians kept beehives everywhere, so some honey-hungry Greeks tried eating from them. Surprisingly, the bees did not prove to be an issue, but their honeycombs did… I’ll let Xenophon describe what happened next: “Those who had eaten a little behaved as though they were drunk, while those who had eaten a lot behaved like madmen, or even like people on the point of death. The ground was so thickly covered with supine men that it looked like the aftermath of a defeat…”
Another point I found interesting was Xenophon’s attitude toward homosexuality. I can recall at least two instances in which Xenophon mentioned a man taking a younger boy to be his lover, and he never seemed to be the least bit bothered by it.
It’s important to remember that Xenophon was an upper-class Athenian - so homosexual relationships between younger boys and older men would not have been unusual to him. Remarkably, the other members of the expedition didn't have any objections either, or if they did, Xenophon didn’t mention it.
that is the flag of Rhodesia not Rhodes dude
@@josh6028 That’s the joke.
I dunno if I am reading too much into it, but it appears that Xenophon implies somewhat negative opinions of pederasty. For instance, iirc, the person jumping off the cliff you mentioned is described as a young boy and the guy jumping after him, due to his 'desire for his beauty' or something along those lines immediately dies because of it. Also, I remember when they were passing through Armenia or Northern Anatolia they were offered male children for sale, and they were not taken. Xenophon, after seeing what happens to people when they are brutally honest (Socrates) likely hid meaning behind the words he used.
Give these things with a grain of salt, it has been over a year since I read the book now.
If I had a coin for every time a military expedition suffered because of bees, I'd have two coins, which isn't a lot but it's still weird that it happened twice.
Is that Rhodes, Rhodesia or Zimbabwe?
Rhodes being Rhodesia is probably my favorite joke on this channel.
Oh wait, I just realized that’s what the ball was. XD
Here's the story of rhodesia: a land both fair and great.

Well Bulgarian flag probably represents Tracians who fought amongst the Greeks, while todays Bulgarians would be their partial decedents.

Even though tracians didn't have a flag, there is a certain symbol that represents them. And it's not the bulgarian flag :D

Sad the only Japanese man in Asia minor threw himself off a cliff instead of being captured. I'm getting a feeling like I've heard that one somewhere.
I don't get the reference. Could you clarify please?
@@kuttex123x4 On the island of Saipan when the USA invaded in 1944, many of the civilians were told, by the Japanese, that the Americans would torture them if they were captured so the civilians decided to throw themselves off the cliffs instead of being captured. It was just another example of the Japanese doctrine of death before surrender.
Bob Semple They really yeeted themselves off of a cliff?
Damn, that's mental
@@kuttex123x4 That is one of the main reasons why I think the nukes were the best option. If the civilians on a small island did that, can you imagine what it would have been like if we invaded the Home Islands?
@@americana_incarnate1717 The argument was that they were going to surrender soon anyway, with or without the bomb. The bomb was dropped, as historians have pointed out, was mainly to intimidate the Soviets. The Okinawa campaign casualties were just retrospectively given as a reason amongst many to avoid saying: we tested live weapon on a dangerous enemy to intimidate our future enemy, force the current enemy to surrender on our term rather than risk having our soon to be enemy gain a foothold and to, of course, test out this awesome weapon.
Also, many Germans civilians committed suicide in 1945 as well, but we don't hear much about it.

Trust me most of the Greek soldiers though they where going too. But the enemy ran away soo they couldn’t
I would watch a movie about Xenophon’s march of the 10,000. That sounds way more awesome than getting outflanked and dying at Thermoplyae.
A mini series of the novel “Gates of Fire” would do Thermopylae more justice. Getting attached to all the characters so deeply almost makes you forget their fate and it seems like they’ll even pull out the win.
Great book, but Tides of War was much better!!
Fun fact, the Cardoucians, called Kardouki in Xenophons Anabasis, are probably the Ancestors of the Kurds!

I am Greek and i must say that it is nice to learn things about your history that are not being teached at schools
They don't teach this in Greek school one of the most famous events in history?
@@your_waifu_hates_you No . They only teach us about the persian campains ( in no detail, only some general facts ), the pelopolisean war, the campain of Alexander the great and the Roman empire
@@your_waifu_hates_you Unfortunately in Greece they don't teach enough about Ancient Greek History. It is purposefully done that way...many of the politicians are mostly behind it so that the newer generations are not as nationalistic I guess. They barely teach about the Greek War of independence anymore..
That's sad cause you Greeks have richest history ever and mostly in ancient Hellas
@@maximux777 Yeah, its sad but its the truth unfortunately 🤷🏻♂️
Imagine grabbing onto someone to stop him from jumping off a cliff only for him to throw you off the clif and then jump
Dunno, i highly doubt that the Greeks would be kind and gentle in their looting. Killing yourself compared to the horrors of having your valuable stolen, your loved ones raped and enslaved, your house burned, your animals killed and your life forfeited as you go through all that as well doesn't sound so bad.
Taking one of the bastard with you down in the process is just the cherry on top.
He grabbed them in an attempt to enslave them, not to save them. Source - Xenophon himself.

Hey they could at least take some arrows for the more useful members of the army.
Ah yes, the Rhodesian Light Infantry, well known for their slinging capabilities.
Using the soundtrack of Hades to tell the tale of Xenophons difficult travels? I see what you did there!👍
I just translated some of Xenophon’s Anabasis in my Greek class. Great video!
@@BLRSharpLight Yeah, modern Greek wouldn’t be too helpful, would it?
@@BLRSharpLight I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what you mean. In context, “Greek” obviously means Ancient Greek, not Modern Greek. Here’s a word of advice: don’t make a problem where there isn’t one. You are obviously just being combative. Go on Twitter if you want that.
Me too
@@deutschamerikaner modern Greek is plenty helpful when translating ancient Greek. Some words are barely used today, some others have slightly different meaning, but the worst part is sentence structuring. And there are some differences, for example the ancient greeks called the sea "thalatta", while modern greeks call the sea "thalassa". It's still the same language, just a different dialect. If you know modern Greek you could adapt to speaking ancient Greek with ancient Greeks in no time.
I really hope this channel attracts more attention. I think your history/philosophy videos are great! There's a lot of potential for another huge educational CZcams channel here.

Xenophon in the first shot looks like a confused owl.... which is very appropriate for his situation at the time xD
The story that inspired and led creation of the movie known as "The Warriors" ( 1979 )
It was originally a 1960s novel before it became a movie about a street gang’s retreat to home

How did a 2-star US Army General and 6,000 in uniform get themselves surrounded by the Taliban in Kabul (not far from ancient Persia)? History it seems repeats itself.
I think an important omission here is that you didn't mention Xenophon's account of the ruins of Ashur, Nimrod, and Nineveh. He gives us a glimpse of those cities two centuries after they were destroyed.
Xenophon one of my favourite historians
Xenophon was a historian, philosopher, military commander and also a military genius?
Goddammit people were much better back then
What is crazy is that Cyrus actually didn’t tell his mercenaries that he was attacking his brother the king. He originally told them they were subduing a mountain tribe. It wasn’t until they were hundreds of miles behind enemy lines that the truth came out.
Call me Ezekiel I love you videos I love the country ball comic humor the funny commentary and the topics you go over please keep this up your videos are a relieving break after a long day at work and especially quite a fun way to learn new historical things I would suggest you do some videos on the renaissance like the wars of reformation. But that is only greed that speaks thank you so much for your creativity and knowledge I wish you well
Don't forget that that as well as giving slings to rhodians, he armed cretans with bows, since they were renowned archers
So the Greeks massacred a settlement that gave them guff, but Xenophon wrote it as a mass suicide... OR they were really that crazy... Given where and when this was both are equally likely scenarios.
Mass suicide was not common but it did happened sometime
@@trla6505 Yeah it's not particularly unique in history. There was the Siege of Masada during the first Judean revolt, the fate of the Teutons at the end of the Cimbrian War, and much more recently the Ottoman siege of Psara and the battle for Okinawa.
Man... What a epic story
That thing the persian mothers did to their children tho, kinda cringe. The ancient world sure was crazy
Not necessarily the ancient world, for example in the siege of Shkodra in 1478-79, after the Turks captured the city many women with their children jumped to the sea probably out of fear of being raped and their children being turned into janisaries and maidens for the Ottomans.

Thanks for bringing up steel vs lead. A few years ago, my government made it so you can't use lead fowl-shot for shotguns, considering lead is poisonous to the environment. Steel doesn't have nearly the weight to it as lead, so it's become much harder to hit them.
And you know what? Good. I like ducks and geese, i think they're neat. They're way too fatty and tough, taste like shit. Everywhere should ban lead as an ammunition, probably cheaper too.
Clicked on this video curious of what the Bulgarians had to do with it, and despite not getting answers the story was awesome.

The Greek and the Kardashians had a battle. 😂😂😂
Fun face, The book and the movie adaptation of The Warriors is heavily inspired by this. The book follows it far more while the movie throws in some elements of The Odyssey.
Nice video dude
Your work is great! Love your stuff.
As a French, I have so much trouble reading the texts you intentionally wrote wrong in this video. It is that hard to understand the sentence right away
I find with his videos the best way to understand is to watch the video ignoring the text he puts on, put auto captions on with them hopefully being close enough to understand what he is saying, then playing it back with with the knowledge of what he said, and then reading the text he put up himself.
I always pause to read all the text as they add a lot of flavor character
Hol up is this a greek journey to the west????
Pretty much

Cyrus hired the Greeks because he the Gramercy Riffs needed help to unite all the suckas and take over all the turf in New York. Sadly he was killed by one of the Rouges who pinned it on The Warriors.
