I love that you got a cat, but if you have foxes or coyotes, you might want to keep her in at dusk and overnight. And since she's dark you have the extra danger of cars at night.

Such a beautiful skirt! I am a huge cat person and I have a black kitty who looked exactly like Jinx at that age. She'll definitely get less demanding when she leaves the kitten stage, which will not be too long.

Thank you for uploading this great tutorial.
I just have one top tip to add about hemming a curved edge. If you not only press at the initial fold, but also at the second fold - it will bubble up way less that way because you ease the fabric with the heat. Another way to help get rid of the extra length is to baste around the curve and gather it ever so slightly and then press it. It will also help the bottom hem to come out way more crisp.
I love your detailed tutorials and your way of life. As I am watching this I am hand-basting a dress for myself. You talking about sewing is the perfect company for this!

It’s so interesting to hear your perspective on an older project and what you would have done differently. It’s honestly really helpful!
Also we have the same chicken door and we love it so far! When we aren’t traveling, ours is set to let the ladies out at sunrise and we shut the door ourselves at night. I’ve only heard good things about that brand, so it’s probably not necessary at all but it gives me a bit more peace of mind

    An excellent skirt!
Even as a cat person; having a growing energetic kitten cooped up indoors for a season would be a trying experience. Cats generally, and kittens even more so, need to much stimulation for that to be fun. I would try to take her outside to explore/play once a day just in an attempt to release energy.
My 'things-i-whish-I-had known-earlier' tips. Put citrus essential oil on anything and everything you want to be off-limits to the cute terror. Put up scratching posts of some kind all over the place, cardboard versions will do fine. They scratch to sharpen the claws but also to mark home territory and cannot truly be taugth to stop that. Most cats learns to do so outside; a cooped up cat is almost guaranteed to do so on walls and furniture. Redirection is the name of the game.

Love the skirt tutorial, even the mistakes and what you learned from them. Hope the chickens are staying warm and safe through the winter. I hope you warm up to Jinx; I was neutral towards cats too (I grew up with dogs) until my first one, Sasha, followed me up an elevator and down a hallway to ask to be let in when I was in college. Almost 40 years later, I am still a sucker for cats and their ways. Hopefully you will be too.

I LOVE that belt loop/suspender button/pocket desgn! I've been looking for pocket ideas that bulk up the hips and this looks right up my alley!!! Definitely bookmarking that for the next time I allow a new idea to jump the line of planned projects! (won't be till after a linen kirtle and linen walking skirt).

The mustard top you styled with the skirt at the time paired SO well together it's beautiful. Very well said for your thoughts on perfectionism, spending so much time and care for the internet vs make a wearable wardrobe, or simply be conscious of that and assess whether or not that's what we want to do. Bravo!

For a moment, Caleb almost looked like he was about to cry. #cutenessoverload Kudos to you for granting his childhood wish, even though you clearly don't like cats much. That's love! ❤️😍💕
I needed to hear your bit about letting go of perfectionism. For roughly twenty years, I've been terrified to sew any of the fabulous frocks dancing in my head, for fear for ruining them, wasting fabric, etc. Your words--and this project--have encouraged me to think through my own projects, take my time, do the best I can, and be content. Thank you! 💜

I love seeing how much you’ve grown as a sewist. It’s great to see an old project and how you would have done it now vs then.
Order of operations for sewing is something that can take ages to get right. I still make mistakes like this which seem so obvious in hindsight!
I’m loving your series of making clothes that fit your lifestyle, body type, and style. It’s really inspiring!

I love your conclusions. I have also rescently come to this realisation that not everything needs to be elaborate, I mostly just need clothes. It is difficult, especially when you are making content for everything not to be a big deal. Its really had me reevaluate my making plans for the year.

I've seen a few of your videos where you make a mistake that makes the garment less wearable/unwearable. I would love to see you pop off the waistband and redo it with a 28 in waist. I know that it might not line up as much but I think it's a great tutorial for people in how to resize their garments.

Beautiful skirt. Shame it's not wearable, but I learned a lot from this video. Last year my younger sister got a cat to the chagrin of our parents who are very much NOT cat people, and now a year later they're completely in love with it. Maybe you and Jinx will end up being better friends than you expect 🙂

Your talk about perfectionist sewing was so helpful to hear! I've spent a lot of time sewing various projects that I really wasn't happy with the final result (mainly not understanding how to sew for my body shape) and therefore not ever wearing them. It left me feeling sorta defeated, because I want to wear my sewn wardrobe but just not feeling comfortable in things. I'm now spending more time making size adjustable, quicker designs. I did however sew an absolutely beautiful lace and rayon lined dress for my daughter's first birthday. It took me ages because of the fabrics but I absolutely adored it, and it will always be something we treasure. Well worth the time :)

Thank you so much for making this video! I just found your channel last month about the time of your “how I stay warm in winter” video, and this skirt flashed on the screen for a few seconds, making me go back and rewatch so I could get a clear look, then going through your other videos to see if it had a tutorial.
I am attempting to not buy new clothes this year, making 2024 “the year of mending,” but I also want to get back to sewing. I’m an avid knitter who is learning how to spin (decently - going from fleece to sweater!) but I haven’t sewn since making costumes about 10 years ago. I bought some wool fabric and some notions last month but have been too intimidated to start. For someone whose hobbies involve a lot of counting and calculations, I SUCK at math - laughably so. But you’ve inspired me, and I’ve been analyzing my clothes that do fit with the intent to make some garments with fabric AND fiber this year!

If only to be so tiny one could make an actual circle skirt 💖 I'm 6' 200lbs and quite lean aside from my shoulders and biceps and I have yet to meet a bolt of fabric wide enough to have a true circle skirt. 🤣 I can piece them together and your very kind and well thought out instructions are something I am infinitely grateful for. Your tutorials are so wholesome and sweet I piece together the fabric while listening. 😄 you really make me happy and feel inspired to sew.
    Vielen Dank 💗

Please keep the cat indoors. The life expectancy for indoor/outdoor cats is the same as strictly outdoor cats, less than 5 years. More importantly, imo, cats wreak havoc on local ecosystems, and contribute to the decline of many song birds.
I'm sorry to get on a soapbox in your comments, this is a very important topic to me that many people don't seem aware of. The kitty is very exciting news, and very cute.
The skirt is beautiful, I laughed a little seeing all the inspo pics because I have those same pictures saved on my Pinterest. I really appreciated the sewing/style retrospective, it was very thoughtful.

I don't drink, but if I did I'd make a drinking game out of how many times you mentioned "matching stripes".
I love cats! So. Freaking. Much. So I am definitely on Caleb's side and am so glad he got to fulfill his cat dreams! It's very thoughtful of you to put up with the cat for him. (Even though the mouse problem helped it along. :p)
I loved this skirt so much when I saw it on your channel. Luckily my sewing skills are at a point to where I've been able to make a couple even without this tutorial, but the journey of mistakes, and learning, and growing is incredibly relatable, as always. And I did get very motivated to try some more pattern matching. Haven't bothered with that much yet... probably should start stretching myself in that area. Though not to the point of perfection. XD

I absolutely love this video. My first foray back into sewing was the outlander pattern with the under garments. I cut out the chemise and started the on the neck by hand rolling the edge and used a blanket stich then I went to put the two pieces together and well I ended up with four different sized pieces to sew together. Watching the absolute care you put into your skirt was mesmerizing. Truely, you have a gift. Several times you put yourself down for it. Other than the waistband which you can enlarge with an upside down v, you encourage people like me to try, to keep on trying even if the outcome is not what was wanted. I can't wait to see what you make next!

I MADE ONE!!!! only issue I had was with the button placket at the back - didn't quite grasp how to apply it properly, so i applied it like bias tape and the bottom of the placket doesn't sit right. Other than that, the tutorial was actually quite easy to follow and the final product is so comfortable and cute! I love that I can fit an entire Nintendo Switch in the pockets and you can't even tell it's in there.

This skirt is so lovely. The pocket detail is stunning! Definitely a work to be proud of!
Perfectionists always have a problem with balance. It's so complicated to work around to a point where you can make a project in a day or two. Especiallywithout having to redo things a time or 37! But a big problem is out view of the project compared to how others see it! We see the wonky bits everyone else sees a lovely creative project. It really takes talking to yourself and telling that inner perfectionists to be quiet!! The inner perfectionists should only be let out when working on something completely expensive and then only for planning purposes!

Good to see one of your vids again. You make circle skirts easier to understand (I still have your multiple skirt vid saved for reference). I know what you mean about cats. I never really wanted one but my son came home with a kitten and she adopted me as her person. We ended up with 5 after she escaped through a second floor window before we could get her to the vet. I became a cat Mum and although I had to give them up when I moved into an apartment I find I miss them. They still come to me when I visit them as they live with my son.

I think, your point about not getting fixated on overly complicated designs and detailed handwork is good advice for beginner and even intermediary sewists. It's so easy, to fall prey to the attitude of wanting to keep up with all the wonderful work we see very accomplished people do on social media. But as beginners, most people need projects they can finish in a reasonable amount of time and that are actually wearable. It just gets too frustrating otherwise and you feel, you're just wasting time and money.
Love this skirt though. It suits you so well. I'd vote for making it wearable, honestly 😅😉

  • @HeadFullaStuffin
    @HeadFullaStuffin Před 7 měsíci

Jinx is so cute!!! Added benefit of getting a cat is that the eggs your chickens produce (once they're properly introduced and everything) can be used to reduce/prevent cat allergies. Like feeding her some of those eggs regularly will prevent the kitten from producing the allergen in her saliva, that she then licks herself clean with. There's a pretty expensive specialty cat food that utilities that bio hacking trick, but it's so much better and cheaper when you have your own chickens.
Also, i think I'll be using that pocket design on a future skirt make. It's super fun.

I have heard so many people say they are not a cat person, only to end up being the cat's favorite person of the household, and becoming totally in love with their cat. I hope this happens to you. Please beware, there are many dangers to indoor/outdoor cats. We only let our older cat out for 1-2 hours in early afternoon, while at least one of us is outside at the same time. Even then, I have had a beloved cat grabbed by a dog, right in front of me, who ran off with him in his jaws. I looked for months....but never found him. I cried for a year... I love your sewing and your analysis of your work. I could make a suggestion of cutting a skirt inner fold out with the same curve to avoid the puckering you have experienced.

I’m starting to think that the reason why is because I don’t absorb enough content for reference, so I wanted to ask if there’s any books or documentaries you might recommend that helped you make such detailed cultures? Thank you! And sorry this is a bit off topic from your video 😅

Cats are a blessing and a curse... you start with one and then you blink the eye and have fifty thousand of them... I got my first one four years ago and I have 10 now...

Hi just wanted to ask if you have any plans for a world building vid on your second channel? I just found you again when trying to get some references for a character that is essentially a part of your avian race. As I’ve moved into the MCYT fandom I’ve been obsessed with the idea of Avians merlings/mer-people as well as humans with animal features and certain instincts of that animal and I realized that it first started with your second channel. I would also love a new discord link that is more time based, as the last one I found was from a year ago. I thank you for reading and I hope you can start posting worldbuilding videos again with whatever new ideas you have for your world.

Don't worry, kittens do calm down as they get older! I work from home, and my 2 black kittens (now fully grown) spend the day sleeping next to me. Adult cats tend to want to be near you but not to be paid any attention.

I highly recommend that you introcude the cat to the chickens before winter is over. She will need to learn that the chickens are part of the home, and not to hunt them. Cats are hunters by nature, and we need to nurture that hunting process to not include the chickens. It is much easier to teach to them in youthful age. Keep in mind that a cat is grown at 6 months of age, so that allows for a limited time to teach. I love cats and chickens and gardening, they are all tricky to keep together. It can be done, don't give up. Come spring, you will also need to teach the cat not to dig in the garden, that will be harder lesson than not hunting the chickens. Basically, teaching boundaries to a creature who is very independent.

yes, that's why I was looking for a younger cat. She has been introduced a few times now. She was actually born in a barn-cat litter, so she might have already met chicken when she was tiny. Given her reaction, I'm thinking she'll do okay with the adult chickens. However I'm sure getting her to leave the babies alone will be more difficult.
