  • Ever wonder how to build a wall properly where there used to be an over head garage door? Many people all make the same mistake. Don't be one of them.

    That's exactly what I'm finding - a very helpful video. I live in Canada, where we have a lot of snow. Initially, I intended to replace my garage door with a wall using concrete blocks only, but I changed my mind after watching your video.

    Now I havent laid blocks but I would imagine this method for sealing it in would be prone to cracks? I would of just poured an all new solid piece. Unless thats no bueno

      I suppose that would work . Are you planning on trying that? If so, please let me know how it worked. I'd very much like to hear about it. Thanks for your comment. Have a good one.

    I’m not comfortable with the demolition part. And I want the garage to still look like a garage from the outside to avoid permits etc. I’m thinking and tell me if this is dumb- to leave the garage door on and build a wall inside right up against it almost. Is that ok?

    • @jimmybs
      @jimmybs  Před 2 měsíci

      I've seen it done before. Some people build it just far enough back from the door to fit a lawn mower. Honestly, it's a little sketchy. But as a
      " temporary " structure? Why not?😂

    Awesome video, very detailed. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the project. Did you find an advantage to raising the floor first and then sealing the door vs doing it the other way around or was it just a matter of preference? I'm planning on doing a similar conversion but I was thinking of sealing the door first.

      As someone who did this kind of work since childhood, I'm always looking for tricks to make my life easier. It made it easy to face nail the joists and to get 20 foot lumber into the garage. But if you don't mind bringing the joists in through a window and using joist hangers, you could close the door opening 1st. Please also watch the other videos in the collection "Making a Garage into Living Space ". They might help you decide what will make the job easier for you. I'm so glad you found my video useful and entertaining. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it. 😊

    My garage itself has a slope about 6 inches into it and comes up to the level of the interior flooring. What is the best way to deal with that? Thank you in advance!

    • @jimmybs
      @jimmybs  Před rokem +1

      Its a complicated question to answer because I don't know what state you live in. I don't know the codes, temperature, or water table. My best advise to you would be to find out if you have local building codes and if you do, call the inspector and ask what he or she wants to see. Vapor barrier? Poured leveller? Pressure treated wood? Then take it from there. Feel free to message me again once you have a little more info. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment. 👍😊

    Great video! How much would the garage door block work cost with a builder? Florida

      @@jimmybs Thanks for reply. I guess It's worth considering - but not sure of DIY or builder costs. Will have to get quotes and go from there if we go that route.

      I am all for do it yourself. My view point is why pay someone a fortune when you could just do it yourself and save. But if you are uncomfortable or uncertain about any part of the project, it's better in the long run to hire a professional . A reputable person or company thats been in business a long time who stands behind their work and who, in a worst case scenario, you can locate and sue.

    No damp proof coursing needed?

    • @jimmybs
      @jimmybs  Před rokem

      Due to the unusual dryness of the concrete floor, I went without. But if you would feel more confident with it or if it's code for your area, then by all means...... use it.
