The funny thing is that most people in the US do learn the metric system in school. Anyone in the STEM fields uses it everyday. I would say that the US uses both systems, but it can be incredibly random when and where we use them.
That's how it is in Canada, Australia and the UK too. It's kinda funny how only the US gets shit for it tho.
And that packaged foods and whatnot in America both uses the Imperial system (and the metric system. It is most likely in parenthesis)
I'm in STEM and i haven't used metric since my physics class about a year ago. I'm in construction now so the only time I GUESS you could say I use metric system is when taking off bolts with 13 wrenches instead of 3/8 wrenches. And even then i don't really look at the size other than to say bigger or smaller
I don't think it matters really when the average American on the street can't even name 5 countries
@@Mephitinae why would that matter? Portugal has no influence over us, why should we learn their name?

I think it's a bit ironic that the "wtf is a kilometer?" gets combined with military stuff in many of those memes. American soldiers probably *do* know what a kilometer is.
The American military actually uses metric. Basically in any aspect where the US deals with the rest of the world, we use metric. We use imperial internally.
@@jerrardbeasley4247 That's not entirely true. In military and science matters the US conforms to the rest of the world. In aviation, it's the opposite.

I thought men love hearing swear words, even if they swear like a sailors.
I'll explain it like this. Many people living in the US are pretty critical of our country and politics. We know there's a lot we could be doing better. But the minute someone fron outside the US criticizes it the spirits of the Founding Fathers possess us and go into a berserker like rage with pride for our country taking any and all criticism as a threat.
This is exactly why people hate Americans so much. Hypocrisy and entitlement. 😂
Sounds similar to our mindset here in Italy.
We are extremely negative and pessimistic towards our country, especially regarding politics, economy, industry, etc... sometimes even bordering on hating our own homeland.
But when an outsider criticizes Italy, like that tik-toker who criticized Amalfi for having to take a long walk with her luggage for reaching the hotel, all Italy came united in insulting her obnoxious attitude.

@@Helperbot-2000 it would cost a lot of money to convert every existing thing to metric. a lot of things here are designed to use nice round numbers in imperial, going to metric would make them very strange numbers and parts that need to be precisely machined to work together wouldnt work when one is in inches and the other in centimeters because youd be going down 6+ decimal places to make it match. if a part is 2.75 inches long it doesnt make any sense to make the replacement part something weird like 69.85mm for the rest of time, you'd just have to redesign the entire thing to be nice round metric numbers.

A kilometer is 1000 meters. A meter is the distance light can travel in 1/299792458 seconds. The measurement unit ”meter” is defined by the velocity of the speed of light. Meaning that the distance that light would travel in 1 second would always be the same and we defined that distance as 299792458 meters and therefore velocity of light by definition from measurement unit ”meter”’s definition is 299792458m/s therein by definition a meter is the distance that light travels in 1/299792458 seconds. Light velocity is actually exactly 299792458m as thats how we defined it.
And also definition of a second is 9192631770 cycles of the radiation produced by the transition between two levels of the cesium-133 atom.
You can define any length that way. Light is a constant speed. So you can define a mile, a foot, a centimeter, an Astronomical Unit, all distances can be defined this way. It is not unique to the meter.
What is unique to the meter is that it was originally tied to the circumference of the Earth. You know a measurement that everybody knows and not something common like the average size of a body part like I don't know....a foot.

0:23 Endearing? Obnoxiously endearing? I'll settled for obnoxious, thank you...
Not to get political, but we aren’t going to replace every speed limit sign in America to fit the metric system. And besides, if you go into any scientific field, you’re going to use the metric/SI system.
still stupid that we didn't convert back when everybody else did. it would have been much cheaper back then.
Back in the 1960s, there was a huge movement to unify different country's measurement systems, many countries did actually go ahead and change their measurements during that time period. the US really wanted to go ahead with this, but there was a really powerful automobile lobby that didn't want that because it would cost too much money for them. in the end we decided not to
@@TheAmyrlinSeat i swear almost every bad decision america has made is because of corporate lobbying

Why not?
Me and my friends were talking about measurements a few months ago and I shouted "WTF IS A KILOMETER". They then all proceeded to explain to me in a condescending way what a kilometer is, as if I genuinely didn't know what it was.
We are no longer friends.
Good
The only reason why I know how what is km is because it's a 1000 m16a4s. The km stands for KilioM16.

Dude the low taper fade meme is still MASSIVE. I see new videos about it every day with millions of views
Fun fact, a contributing factor to the US not adopting the metric system was the ship carrying the weights for the metric system being sunk by privateers, British privateers to be more specific.
wow
Well, I’ll be honest, not everything is so bad with the imperial system. For example, here in Russia we don’t even know what a pint is and how much it is in milliliters, but for some reason we still measure beer with it. It’s the same with inches - no one knows what it is, if you randomly ask people on the street to show about 15 inches, no one can handle it, but as soon as it comes to the screen diagonal, everything immediately becomes clear to everyone. It's just some kind of magic.
Common mistake the "eagle screech" is actually the red-tailed hawk.
"Wtf is a kilometer" is basically the way Americans say "I'm too stupid to understand a basic measurement system"

- A unit of length divisible by 12 instead of 10, which means a third and a quarter of a foot are easily measured
- Five different measurement levels for volume, each of which is useful in different situations
- Temperature measurement is more precise without having to go into decimal points
Tell me what's so good about metric again?
um base 10 which isn't even the best base it's just the one most people are taught
- Multiplication and division by 10 is much easier especially for larger numbers. How many inches in 57 feet?
- So you have to use more than one measurment for volume but you are sneakily trying to call it an advantage? Nice try
- That is a non-argument based on something completely arbitrary, because precision has nothing to do with going into decimal points or not, by definition anything for which one unit corresponds to a smaller change will have that property. For instance, you could use for example deciCelsius, where 10 degrees decicelsius = 1 degree celsius. Bam, now, according to your arbitrary choice, they are now more "precise" than Fahrenheit.
I don't know, if there's nothing good about it, why does everyone, including you, use metric system whenever actual precision is required such as in science?
@@ric6611
- 570 plus 114, or 684.
- Cups are for milk, pints are for beer, quarts are for motor oil, and gallons are for gas. There's dedicated 1/3 and 1/4 cup measuring cups, instead of having to go for the glass one with the red numbers on the side every time.
- You could, but people don't. And it is subjective, but 30 degree weather doesn't sound like a scorcher to me. 90 does.
We use metric for scientific stuff as a courtesy to the rest of the world. We had to do it for the ISS because other contributing countries weren't cool like us and we didn't want confusion. The Brits use Imperial for many distance measurements because it's more convenient. That's why it's called Imperial, even.
Nothing you do is that important for starters by using metric if you need greater accuracy in your measurements you can just drop down a unit which can generally be done in your head because it is so simple to work, same for fluids why would you need multiple types of measurement when 1 is faster and more accurate and an easily convert from the smallest precision measurement to massive scales. As for temperature you serious want to complain about the simplicity of decimal points when you measuring system uses fractions
@@shaynegadsden Yes I will complain, because I'm a structural engineer, and fractions are more useful to us, as are inches. If there's a beam that spans eight feet and it needs to be broken into three equal spans, that divides into two foot eight, easy. Want to cut a meter into thirds? Good luck, buddy. Even dropping into decimeters (which nobody does) won't save you. And you can't scale up the volume measurements to any massive number with metric, it's just liters and milliliters. How much oil does the world consume every day? You'll get the answer in millions of gallons, or millions of barrels, but never in liters.
"A land of contradictions" didn't know we were throwing shade at politicians right now.

As an american...
i prefer metric. it's just way easier idk why we don't use it
To be fair to the whole “will measure with anything” stereotype, I can visualize the size of a dishwasher must better than Feet/Kilometers
No. You can't visualize 234 washing machines in distance...
But 1, or 2 km is very easy to visualize (if you use it)
Okay just visualize an M16, that's 1 meter. And kilogram is a Hi-power Browning, if you don't know what that is just think of 1911 but in 9mm. Congradulations you're thinking in metric, the 'MERICA way.
