Between Fears, Farer and CW, British microbrands are picking up a lot of slack from the embarrassment that is Bremont.
Hating on Bremont is going to become the watch geek version of hating on Nickleback
True
And Garrick. Great people to work with!
just got my first CW recently and im properly blown away. was only 2K$ usd but has in-house sh21 movement and immaculate finishing.
I can’t for the life of me understand Bremont’s pricing scheme. A high-end Seiko has better value.
I'm always delighted to see a mechanical watch without "AUTOMATIC" marring the dial.
That's the issue I have with Fears, it's the pricing. I don't think there is value for money at that price range. For the same price there are a lot of choices that seem of higher quality, including better movement. And yes, not a big fan of the onion crown.
Overpriced, and the less said about the current owner, the better.
Would you rather have a great value watch that looks meh or an over priced watch that works well enough and lights your fire?
@@Newerasameareawhy not a great value watch that looks great? Plenty of those about.
Bruh you just make a darksouls reference in a watch video? lmfao thats legendary. Never imagined Id hear such a thing. This is why you're the goat.
I am pretty sure he has before in another video 😂 😂 💀
And a Simpson's Steamed Hams reference
@@aldoluis89 it is such a breath of fresh air. The watch world is often way too serious and i always feel like i dont quite belong sometimes with the generally older, "grown man" crowd. A reference like this reminds me that even chronically online gamers are welcome here.
Yeah he’s done that at least one other time 😂
I was laughing at the Planck length reference
I do wish more watch brands used black mother of pearl.
Venetianico.
The colours are reminiscent of the colours you see on the surface of a soap bubble , once I heard the price however ,POP ! The bubble was gone, but it is beautiful
Yep, same here. I was thinking about sub £1000, but £3850!!!
@@alwayspooh1588 exactly what I thought, approx £800.00.
I had the opportunity to meet Nicholas and to see this mother-of-pearl beauty in the steel. There's nothing more to add, it's stunning, and maybe just maybe one day it's glimmering dial will light up the inside of my watch box 😄 as for sharing a watch with my wife - we're already doing that with our beloved Cartier Tank Must, a 15 year wedding anniversary piece 👍
Great looking watch, love the indices...but, but, the finish between the outer disc and inner disc on the dial, looks a tad ropey. It may be difficult to finish or cut mother of pearl (im no MoP expert 😂), but I'd prefer a much crisper/HD finish at that price.
I'm not an expert, either, but I bet it's hard to keep mother of pearl from flaking and chipping.
@BruceCross for sure, it must be a horrible material to work with. But for circa 3k...I'd want a much sharper finish
@@thatguyinachair5912 True, you should be picky at $3k. It's serious money.
Looked a bit rugged between the six and seven .
This watch is handsome, but for $4,000 I think I’d take my money elsewhere if I’m being honest. But that’s probably because my collection isn’t as extensive as yours. I think this is a great choice for someone who has experienced a lot of other watches from “mainstream” brands. When you’ve owned Speedmasters, Datejusts, Royal Oaks, Seamaster and Submariners, you’re eventually gonna get bored. This watch is a perfect remedy for someone who is bored with the household names we all covet.
this is THE comment. 100% on spot
As a Fears fanboy, I can actually understand people’s worries concerning price etc.
considering the amount of craftsmanship that goes into each model can explain to an extent….what sets them apart is number 4…the gentleman’s passion for the brand is infectious. The community of owners is a huge plus and not as blinkered as other British micro brands such as Christopher Ward.
You’re right. The vitriol CW got for releasing the Twelve X was ridiculous. Beautiful watch, 120 hours power reserve, in house movement and the skeleton dial. This Fears is a beautiful, but not far off the CW price and barely a murmur.
Sinn 556 IB black MOP is another stunner.
I saw Fears at windup NY. Their watches are on a whole other level. They must be experienced in person. Absolutely stunning and screaming high quality. Congrats
Holy moly, that's gorgeous! Been a little while since I've desired a watch so strongly. Thanks for sharing this one with us, Andrew. If only Fears could chop the last digit off the price, I'd be all over it!
Bring a white scrim from the top of the opening of your white box, to nearly touching your lens. It should kill that black circle reflection on your watches.
Oh my God, a direct Dark Souls reference at @3:54 🤘🏽🎮
Love your continuing stellar humorous writing and delivery, on top of your incredible watch knowledge and descriptions!
This is a freaking gorgeous watch, congratulations Andrew! 🤘🏽⌚💙
Andrew you always put me in a good mood. Thank you.
Nice looking dial! Congratulations, on the pickup👍🏻 When I was in the Army I was stationed in Alaska. I was able to view the “Northern Lights” over a dozen times!
Andrew for prime minister!
Nothing like the feeling of buying a new watch! Well maybe….. nah, there’s nothing like the feeling of buying a new watch 😂
Had one arrive today. Yummmmmm.
No argument there. 😅
The alligator strap is striking at 9:12 so long as it's not one of those endangered species ones that you can import into the US.
Welcome to the club. Absolutely beautiful watches and look even better on the bracelet
Very nice watch. But... No display back, no sale for me. That's just the way I am. I wanna see the guts.
I did make an exception on the C Ward Bel Canto, because it has a solid back for a reason. BTW I just found out yesterday that my (gold dial, brown leather strap) Bel Canto has been delayed from July to October due to whoever makes the "gong" not living up to CW's quality standard. Something about "oil stains".
I do enjoy your videos, Good Sir. Keep it up!
Love the B-roll; such good footage! This is my favourite video on the channel since the bell canto video.
Congrats on your new watch!!!
You’ve lost me at GBP 3850…. Wow, nice watch, but I’d rather get cushion shape vintage monza heuer instead?
Glad you mentioned the Sinn 556 with the black mother pearl. That’s a good looking watch.
The price is just prohibitive for me. Saw their watches at the Alliance’s British Watch Day back in March. Nice enough looking, and the finishing/details is sharp. But THAT price for a bog standard ETA movement behind a plain, unadorned case back is really pushing it. Longines dress watches come in at less. Nomos are making great looking watches with in-house movements for that and less. I’d rather have a Farer with its playfulness and highly respectable finishing for half the price, as good a movement (on display!), and all those lovely colours. Fears just feels a bit too restrained, lazy even.
But I love the videos and especially the narration! 👍
Another great video Andrew. Big fan of Fears - they are putting out some terrific pieces. I have a Brunswick Pink and pre-ordered the Silver Noir.
That was a delightfully devilish review, Andrew.
I think I got my wife a bicycle helmet once that I ended up wearing more. It did not go over well. I like your new watch BTW, and agree that GS dials are probably what this reminds me of most. Very cool.
😂
I should have caveated... the thing you buy should be vaguely something they also want!
Ahhh .. I am a little slow :)
I really dig the comparison towards the end as well as the strap show
Love the different straps shown in the video , gives great ideas
I adore MOP on Men's watches, they're super prevalent in female watches but quite rare in men's. Fears deserves credit for taking MOP seriously. I prefer 'White' variants but still.
My first ever 'expensive' watch that I bought with my own money because I thought it was unbelievably cool and frankly a bargain given what it could do was the original Tissot T-Touch with a white Mother of Pearl dial. That came out before Touch Phones let alone smart watches so being able to tap the crystal and have the hands move into 'Compass' mode and point North was an AMAZING party trick! Plus be a Barometer, Thermometer, Altimeter, Alarm and Chronograph was WILD for the time. Even now I see people's eyes light up when I show them.
How about the best line of the day, perhaps of the year, "Once I lowered my eyes from rolling them so far back into my head I could see into the future." Lol! Hell of a line, Andrew.
This might be the very best bit of watch related content ever. Absolutely made my day! Funny stuff, but some great/useful observations as well. I've definitely thought about the prospect of co-ownership with my wife recently as well, particularly with the 36mm light blue Glycine Airman Purist on the gray fine grain leather strap.
It's a lovely looking thing. I like the textures and layers. As mentioned, the price is too rich for me for a watch with that workhorse movement. Definitely a handsome and interesting piece though. Congratulations.
My wife has claimed 5 of my watches, which is both good and bad. The bad is I'm not likely to wear them again, the good is that I am already working on their replacements. Thanks for the review.
I was very impressed with Fears and the British Watchmakers Day. There were a few models I’d happily own and unusually my wife agreed too.
"So you can go back and threaten the other oysters with it"😂😂😂
Brilliant!
After many of Andrews videos here and at WF, I bought my first Grand Seiko Spring drive, and oh boy it does not disappoint. What a gorgeous watch. SBGA083. Thanks Andrew for all the fun videos.
Someone in our London watch group has one of these, and I can confirm that it's a unique looker in person! The mother of pearl doesn't hide the same way the darker, duller shade of the Sinn does.
It's a bit of a left field choice and it's not really playing at the same level, but the Wancher Kaguya is the closest you can get on a budget. It's a similarly-sized, bold luminescent blue mother of pearl dial is very impressive for the price.
I love Delugs! One of their straps arrived at my door today 😁
Congrats 👏
Ahahaha your threaten the oysters bit made me spit toothpaste all over the wall. Never change.
" . . . and as is customary around these parts . . .". British understatement at it's most understated.
Congratulations it looks epic 🎉
I didn't see it either. There was fog here; but, i could have driven up the road.
Such is life.
Andrew, you should have some sentimental msg to Charlotte engraved on the case back, so the two of you are reminded whenever one of you wears it.
I just found out that you are an author. I added one of your books to my Amazon cart. Excited to check out your work.
Currently wearing my Fears Redcliff with the onyx dial by Collective Horology. They really do make some stunners.
I am a sucker for Fears watchers. Congrats !
Love that dial!
Probably the very first (and second) time(s) anyone has referenced Dark Souls to describe mother of pearl. Love it
Andrew’s reviews are my most anticipated of the other watch content creators I follow on CZcams. My favorite line ever uttered on CZcams is “like a duck takes to lava.”
Simpson references on point
Don’t sleep on the mother of pearl selections at Formex. The Aqua-Terresque plank dial made from a continuous piece of MoP is glorious. Its doesn’t have the same “pop” as a large flat piece like Fears, but it’s a wonder all its own.
Nice coincidence. James Porter is a Fears stockist in Glasgow and I was in today to buy a Fears Redcliff in cherry red. Whilst waiting for them to adjust the bracelet, I looked round the shop and finally saw the Fears display in the back... and they had an Aurora in stock! Whilst I fancied it, 'er indoors didn't so if anyone on Andrew's channel would like to see one in real life, and live in the central belt or Strathclyde, James Porter in Argyll Arcade has one.
Got my Smiths PRS-29A this week. Surprisingly excellent watch and gives me the feels in the same way my old IWC mark 16 / Aqua Terra did....36mm, manual wind? Yes please.
Fears is awesome by the way
I can understand the price, given the materials and the necessary hand work.
Trying to justify the price of some of these micro-brand watches gets tougher and tougher, even for a smooth-talker like you 😉 I get the TEAM GREAT BRITAIN wave you are riding lately, but this definitely isn’t a 4500 euros watch (and brand).
A wonderful addition to the family .
I mean collection ….
Fierce choice indeed 😉
Interesting sourcing. Much of the dial/movements sourced from Germany/Switzerland. Case and Bracelet sourced from Hong Kong
Question. Is there any reason for the flaking/chipping on the outer MOP dial on the inner edges from 5 to 8 o’clock? 12:56
And I understand I only saw it in macro shots but just curious. Awesome vid!
You had me, until the price. For that much scrilla, I would prefer a prettier movement with a display case back.
How does Fears get an ETA movement?
Saw this at Intersect Atlanta. Really good looking watch.
I met Nicholas in California and was able to check out the watches in person and they really do look great.
Reminds me of the shimmer from Annihilation. Congrats on the new watch Andrew.
You had me at smaller than a Planck length lol! Nice one Andrew :-)
The Fears watch I really fancied was a limited edition tank shaped model that they did a while ago. Really nice. It did need to be in gold rather than steel though.
"So you can go back and frighten the other oysters with it." Laughed out loud. Have fun with your new horological bivalve.
You forgot the Steinhart 39 Ocean Sub homage that veers far enough away from Rolex and old ladies to be wholly acceptable. At least to me. And the few hundred quid it cost me was very acceptable indeed. 👍😄
You've inspired me - I shall go and dig it out of my apocalypse ready Peli watch case. 😄
Would I share a watch with a partner? Maybe. But probably not a four grand one. 😂
I, for one, love the onion.
There. I said it.
Wow, what a dial. That's the first time in 25 years I considered Wolf-whistling as an appropriate response.
In Greece it's 3600 brand new and the next day at the pawnshop it's 50 bucks.
I hope in other countries it holds it;s value.
Which pawnshop? I’ll buy it right now if they ship to the US
@@JackoWillMakeLives-loveu “In Philadelphia, it’s worth 50 bucks.”
@@JackoWillMakeLives-loveu Me too - I'll buy 100 of them if they are 50 bucks. Fargin iceholes who make comments....
Beautiful!
I just joined your patreon as a friend. A pretty cool story back in 2015 I walk into my authorized dealer and purchase a Panerai 104. That evening I didn't like the way it looked on my wrist and I sure didn't like the resale value. The next day I walked back into the authorized dealer and what did I see sitting in the case but a Rolex GMT blnr 116710. Now I wanted a Rolex in the first place so I returned the Panerai, got my refund for the maintenance plan, and finance like 2,000 bucks and got it for $8950 out the door, no tax. Little did I know that the market would dry up and that I was also purchasing the first Rolex with a bi-colored cerachrome bezel. Sometimes it helps to be in the right place at the right time. Cheers my friend and thanks for the great content!
Nice color, looks good, everything depends of the price of course
“This is nature’s compact disc.”
lol!! Well done.
perfect hair style for you, Andrew; short and neat. keep it, man.
Really beautiful looking watch… I agree the movement could be visible and decorated to add interest… and I noticed the outer pearl donut as you called it… is finished poorly around the 6 o’clock area very noticeable under high magnification… pearl must be a nightmare to finish and edge, or perhaps it was damaged after being put together? There are visible specs of material near the 9 o’clock area on the bezel…or is that dust on the Crystal?
Haha! I’m being picky. Overall it’s a stunning and unique piece… I’m glad you’re enjoying it…. Like you I was asleep when the Aurora came and only saw it on photos! 🤣🤣🫣😴😴
I think you should stop claiming Charlotte's watch as your own. My two cents. Congratulations on the purchase, though 👏
The presence of "the partner" in the watch youtubers space is one of my favorite features, because usually they're aren't as attached as we geeks, and are much more objective towards the hobby
That's a nice way to describe the exclamation of "really, another one?!?" That I get from my partner every time I purchase a new watch.
I think your last comments got me. I don't mind spending that cash on a watch that looks like this. I do might spashing that on an ETA powered watch.
Pretty, but very pricey at almost EUR4k given there's only a workhorse ETA 2824-2 movement inside.
Nice watch, but the price is ridiculous, especially for an ETA driven one. £1000 would seem reasonable, like the Sinn 556.
I had a chance to see this in person (thanks Redbar!) and had almost the same impression as Mr Morgan. The dial is otherworldly in its beauty and refinement. That damned onion crown kept me from making the purchase.
Come over to Alberta and head north to the Yukon if you want to see the Aurora borealis. We get them fairly regularly in southern AB (Calgary) but almost every night if you go north.
I like this watch also Andrew
Gits and shiggles. hahaha I couldn't focus after that...
It was the ‘boreOlis’ that cracked me up . Dear Andrew likes to wind us up . (boomboom) . L gooru
I absolutely love the idea of getting a watch I can share with my wife.
Beautiful watch -not my style, but definitely very nice! $3K - hmmm, not sure about that Andrew, but your wife is happy, so wise move indeed!
I think the Citizen Unite the Blue series watches are more stunning for color, especially in direct sunlight
You are the Goat we all love you! But I must say the GOAT deserves a better background. We don’t want you becoming a part of that wall, you deserve more than that!
One word: stunning.
Very tempted by the Fears Brunswick when you first featured it, but alas! not a fan of cushion shapes, plus date windows are (almost) essential. Still, you make a good argument for it, so will consider. How does one get to Bristol, I wonder…
This is one of your funniest yet! I too take 'space pictures' for gits and shiggles and have also experienced the random image leading to financial ruin. Laughing out loud to your comments on this made me as popular as a fart in a lift with 'er indoors' as she was dozing off at the time 😅
Oh my i was not expecting a darksouls reference, followed immediately by another. Watches and dark souls, two of my favorite things
Great inclusion of a classic Simpsons quote 😃
Beautiful watch, and a Dark Souls reference… me as a gamer: “One of us! One of us!”
Well FY very much sir! I've been trying not to buy one of these since they were launched . Thanks to you and Mrs Hands I need one in my life like my left ventricle. And I've just paid for something rather special like 60mims ago
Clarksons farm is soooo good
