ABANDONED SEARS - Great Lakes Mall anchor - Mentor, Ohio

- The Great Lakes Mall anchor closed in 2017 and sits a big eyesore at 20 acres. Luckily, the mall is doing well. Recently the Sears building was purchased by Petros Group with no plans, being that it was “too good to pass up.”
I can’t believe this mall is still standing. I got pulled over for racing across the parking lot back in the late 70s.
Great video. Thanks.
Hahaha! Thank you for watching😊
Me too. I was doing doughnuts in the parking lot in the winter. In my 1970 Camaro. Just got a warning. It was late and the Mall was closed.
@@maxwellcrazycat9204 doing donuts that lot was awesome my boyfriend did that too 70s were great
I used to go there all the time. That was my favorite Sears store. It’s cool that you’re a local girl doing these tours.
Mentor is the largest city in Lake County, Ohio, United States. The population was 47,450 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Mentor was first settled in 1797.
I remember the sears catalog and when craftsman made the best tools and equipment
I remember that Sears well. The last Christmas they were open I bought Christmas presents there. Under the awning was customer pickup for equipment like lawn and garden. The Last thing that I picked up there, was a clearance item. I don't remember what it was but there are some issue with the price. I remember arguing with the manager, that salesman had promised me one price, and when I went to pick it up they were trying to charge me a different price. I won that argument.
If I’m not mistaken, they actually did have a garden center there.
My buddy worked there for several years back in the late 80s, early 90s before hoping the Air Force.
Man I miss Sears......

Ok wondered about that too! Thank you
Good question I'd be interested in knowing that too

Abandoned commercial buildings are a dime a dozen these days. I often think about buying one in the country and making it into my personal home.
It's a nice big space, but too much money and upkeep for these really large places. Pretty much all of them have those awful warehouse metal roofs like a grocery store has and there's just ceiling tile between the inside and metal roof. I would imagine they would get quite hot and cold without massive HVAC systems that probably cost the total mortgage on a 3 bedroom house. On the other hand, some of those small solidly built brick buildings, that might be a good investment. I'm not a big fan of all of the windows that they tend to have, though...too much theft risk for a private home.
In the late 90s Sears stores we're everyone's go to department store because you could buy everything, all types of clothes, car stereos, 📺 tvs and I really don't know what would have saved these stores but I guess if they would have foreseen doing a little bit more online but I appreciate the video because it's nice to reminisce and remember when I was a kid????
I just wonder what people are going to be talking about in 20 or 30 years that's here🤷♂️ I guess we don't appreciate it so much at the time but thanks for the awesome video and I noticed you're putting up a lot of videos so keep up the good work🎉👍
sears created discover card and was heavy into financing home repairs then they bought k Mart and was in real estate holdings
That little black box with the reflective tape at 8:15 is a Knox. It contains keys to the building, in case the fire department needs to get in.
I seen those Knox Boxes in some of your other videos Lyd.
Right! The videos weren’t posted in chronological order
I was somewhat dismayed by the lack of ceiling fans in the auto center, (unless another fan collector salvaged them. I suppose that could account for the broken window, who knows)? But I digress. The object at 16:02 is called a recoil air hose. That would have been connected to an air compressor in the tire center. Anyway, keep up the awesome vids!
Used to hangout at the Great Lakes Café. Do some shopping and have a drink and some lunch. Christmas time was great.
The part she questioned if it was the garden shop; it was. The doors she looked through before that was the tool department and indoor garden shop. Also, (at 4:56) you could see one set of stairs going up to the second floor. There was also an elevator but it was too the side. To the right of the stairs was the shoe dept. And to the left was the kids dept. All the way straight ahead was the womens department. Upstairs was electronics and non clothes stuff.
Also, the plans that we keep hearing about is converting that sears into condos. No details but it hasn't gotten any closer to reality in over 15 years.
My hometown ! I miss Sears and Macys!
They leave the doors open because of heat, that basically is an airlock and without air conditioning and circulation it can get hot and literally blow the glass out of those doors so they leave the inside doors opened so that it doesn't get so hot in there. When the store was opened that's what that area was for is to stop heat Loss and air conditioning loss so you went in the first set of doors the door shut behind you and you open the second set and it helped with maintaining temperature.
Happy to see a new video from you. Last time I was in Cleveland was in the early 1990s to see the Ramones. I miss sears. In my city our sears will start to be torn down in a week. I live across the lake from Ohio in southern Ontario Canada.
you havent missed much
Early 90s Ramones? Very cool 😎 hello from other side of the lake!
@@Lydwetzel yes it was at the Cleveland music hall on November 2 1992. Social Distortion opened up for them. Wasn’t too far of a drive from here to get there. 😊
I'm from one state over in southwestern Indiana. Evansville once had a couple of Sears, each connected to a mall. One mall, the Washington Square Mall, which was booming in the 90's, but is now just used for second hand stores, one bar and grill and I think a Noble Roman's Pizza. I'm actually from Vincennes so I only visit Evansville once every month or so. And the other was at Eastland Mall (still doing very well to this day), which stayed afloat until 2018 I think. This was the time when they all began dropping like flies. At least in this area.
That black metal box holds the key to the store for firefighters to enter emergency.
Great job Lyd! You wiping off the graffiti in the dust on the glass shows your true feelings and passion for what you’re doing here. Be safe please !
The red tubing type thing that was by the window is usually an air hose for repairing/fixing tires in filling them with air.
Thank you!
This is my very first viewing of your video. I loved it!! I definitely will be watching more! Keep up the great work!!! By the way greetings from North Carolina!!!
Thank you for watching new subscriber!
I really like how you get every single detail of the places you explore. Thank you again. Stay safe, and God bless 😁👍
Thank you! I notice it all 😊
The Sears Stores in Roseville and, in Troy both mall, anchor stores, and now have new businesses in them. They are:
1.At,Home,
2.Hobby Lobby.
7:25
To my knowledge, this store was to be gutted & turned into "upscale" Apartments & condos, from the get go on it's closing (or very soon after). Curious now when it was sold. I don't go by the mall on 84 much any more, so I'm missing that, but yes it looks bad. This mall underwent some kind of unneeded renovations not too long ago, Italian marble floors (that were in nice shape) were removed & cheap ceramic took it's place. There is an Abandoned Macy's on the other end.
16:06 an air hose. Thanks for the look, as close as I am I haven't drove around that way in a while.
8:25 Lyds google Eddie Lampert. He was the CEO that single-handedly destroyed the company for personal enrichment.
You're right in my backyard, I been in this area for 30yrs and it's a great area to live. the mall is still going strong its one of the few remaining malls that's still doing well.
Happy for this mall
Im watching this 3 miles away. spent a lot of teen years in that mall.
In 2017 Sears Holdings closed 109 Kmart and 41 Sears outlets and sold their Craftsman line of tools to Stanley/Black & Decker in an attempt to prop up the failing company. It turned out to be just the beginning of their slide to the bottom. Stores like this one are cavernous and obsolete today. Retailers do not need or want stores this big anymore. Unfortunately demolition or cutting them up into smaller units are the only alternatives besides making them office buildings.
Thank you! Knew something big happened in 2017
My family shop there from time to time and right before they closed.
I did alot of Christmas shopping there until they closed...it's a shame how online has killed off stores.
It’s awesome that someone decided to buy the building, especially with graffiti. I do admire art work, but when it comes to inappropriate things…that’s where I draw the line.
Agree!
I still have a Sears credit card from 1973.
Sears was my first credit card when I turned 18. It's long gone. Been to this Sears many times. Sad to see it abandoned.
Me too, it's just a relic now. I applied for my card at Sears when it was located at Shoregate in Willowick, Ohio. It's now a Marcs.
That's my local Sears I go by there and around there all the time , ok place to long board over by the macys , still the nicest mall around though I think, the big arcade has been there around 5 or 8 years give or take and does pretty decent because it's also a bowling alley and has a bar there , I deliver beer there and they get a pretty good amount ,,glad it's there probably one of the places holding the place together.
5:35 was Sears Lawn & Garden. The larger "A" stores had L&G both indoor and outdoor display and sales area.
I recall a plan to turn that Sears into condos and stores on the first floor. It must have fallen through.
Thanks again 👍🇺🇸
great video Lyd.
Could check out the midway mall in Elyria Ohio. They have a lot of abandoned stores if not the entire mall now plus a sears.
Those little designs above the pillars remind me of the cubes from Portal
Great video we had some sears in Canada too brought back memories especially thinking of the sears Christmas catalog they would put out😊
They typically keep the inner doors open for liability. Someone broke into a store and torched it, but they couldn't escape. The judge found the property owner liable for the accidental loss.
Interesting, thank you!
Appreciate it! Love to see good spots in the Cleveland area, btw you have a perfect inland north accent
Excellent video! That was an air hose hanging by the window
Excellent video great job

maybe that chair came from the optical dept.
they made their automotive center big so they could overcharge more people. lol
I remember the days it opened I was little but remember going to the mall esp at Christmas seeing Santa it was a beautiful mall sad what it's become. My dad's favorite store tools hecswore by craftsman
Now you're in my neck of the woods, such a shame to see that Sears go away and not be used. Luckily, Mentor is a booming town and real estate is at a premium there.
& if it is not paved in Mentor, Osborne will be sure to provide the concrete! 🤣
I remember when that Sears and the nearby Penney's and May Co. had escalators.
Awesome video! I miss Sears, used to be my goto store for a lot of stuff...
Thank you 😊
The have the very same Sears store in salt lake city Fashion place mall. But there long gone.
My sears in ontario turned into avita hospital. We have a cheddars abanded in ontario. And i think a burger king abanded in shelby ,ohio.
I used to work there 10 years ago. Got let go 3 months into my employment. Guess it was for tbe the better, as it felt like not long afterwards, it closed down. I just found it funny but sad that every day they were telling us how much money they were losing, yet they wanted us to push credit card apps. We had no customers.
As of a few years ago there were only 10 sears left.the reason they went bankrupt, is due to walmart and amazon. so sad you kinda felt special as a kid going into one.peace
You ever make it down here to Columbus? We have tons of abandon buildings too.
That box is a Knox box. Holds keys for fire department emergency entry
Ever think of going to haunted locations??👻💀
I lived in nearby Bedford as a kid, my good friend lived in mentor.
The flagpole probably had the U. S. Flag. So another commercial company has already bought the building? Thank you ❤💕💜😉😘🥰😍 Did a Wal Mart (or Sams) happen to open about the same time ss the Sears closing? Hugs my traveling queen 👑 ❤️💜 "Never too big to fail..." 16:10 might be an air hose, or a garden hose. 🌹
Wal*Mart about a couple miles East, & come to think of it Wal*Mart wanted to put a second floor on their existing store & convert to a "Super" but Mentor rejected the proposal.
@@CSmith-gb1sl so the Wal Mart is a single floor building? Thank you
@@j.lietka9406 Yes, single story as just about all are, they built it in '91 or '92. Wal*Mart could not find enough land to stay in Mentor to expand it, so that empty Sears would be a good candidate for it, seeing that mall area lost its only grocery store recently as well.
I haven't seen a Wal*Mart as a mall anchor... yet.
@@CSmith-gb1sl seems like it take a lot of work to turn it into a Wal Mart!
@@j.lietka9406 They would likely gut the building anyway, even if it was newer, & Wal^Mart has the cash. Fun fact, when it opened, the Eastlake Super Wal*Mart (about 5 miles away) was their smallest Super store in the country.
Sears went bankrupt in 2018 and 2019 some stores were sold off to another company
midway mall in elyria has a emty sears and most of the whole mall is vacant too
They are demolishing the Sears in my area right now as we speak. It sat empty for at least 7-8 years.
Very sad!
@@Lydwetzel I know! I used to buy bathing suits there.
Is GLM gone? I lived in Chardon as a kid and would go to that mall all the time. Mom bought our first color tv at that mall in the early 80’s.
Great video
7:33 I picked up my washing machine from there 😂
Yes I remember that was a pick up area under the canopy
get ready for Rite Aid, all of them are closing
That would be a great spot for a wicked haunted house or an indoor skate park.
I was in brookpark yesterday I noticed that brookview elementary school is abandoned don't know if thats your type of exploration but it looked pretty cool
I would be into that yes!

@@Lydwetzel Seasonal was always inside that area (Lawnmowers, Christmas Trees), I remember looking at the riding mowers over there. Bought all my appliances from that store when I moved back to the area, sad to see it go. 😟
Optical or makeup counter?
@@karolinesmail489 There was a Sears Optical in that store, & a hair salon, but I don't recall a make-up area.

Is there a radio station in Cincinnati Ohio called "W K R P"
No, it was WKRC.
@@CSmith-gb1sl
WELL that certainly makes sense
Cause there was a program on TV
called W K R P in CINCINNATI
it was a comedy show
And that why I was asking.
@@duanecole6663 Yes, I remember it quite well, it was likely a satire on WKRC & they couldn't use valid callsigns for the show due to legalities.

That certainly makes sense
