You've seen all the cute videos, but do you know the reality of caring for an owl? This video shows you why owls don't really make good pets, in addition to being illegal in many countries.
I completely agree, I dont agree with these people posting videos of pet owls online, its just encouraging more people to jump on the bandwagon. I live opposite a small nature reserve and at night, I hear the hooting of tawny owls and screeching of barn owls like 40 yards away. Why the heck would you want to mess with that? They are nocturnal active during dark hours and we as humans go to sleep at night during dark hours so how can we provide care for such a species it makes no sense for us to keep them as ''pets'' these animals should be free not shacked up with some old crone or some narcissistic kids lit up home. Get another dog or cat!
This doesn’t really seem much worse than keeping a dog or any other moderate maintenance pet. I’m not saying to get an owl, but most pets are more work than people realize.
I watched a super cute video of an owl and started thinking about having a pet owl but after watching this video my desire for one has diminished. thank you for this video?
Daniel Allen Disagree with the petted one. There are actually a lot of owls that like to be pet. You just need a lot of trust with them and the proper way.
In nature there is the ecosystem that takes care of disposing of waste: for the excrement there are dung beetles, for the vomit marks of feathers and rest of bones of the prey there are the microorganisms of the soil and insects. If we want to live with owls, keeping them armored in a room is not a good idea and I don't understand where the idea comes from that a bird of prey hunter can be kept permanently locked up in an artificial cave like our homes. Perhaps instead of accustoming animals to living in cages, we should do a rehabilitation course for humans on how to live in contact with the natural world again. It would be more efficient.
Thank you for this. I was thinking of having one but after watching this I'd rather appreciate them from afar. In the wilderness where they are most happy.
How is it worse than keeping any other moderate maintenance pet? If you had a lizard you’d have to feed it live bugs. Dogs are noisy. Rabbits crap everywhere. Many cats don’t like being petted. Most every pet is a fair bit of expense and effort to tend. I’m not saying you should get an owl, but, if this list puts you off, then most pets will be more work than you’d like.
"The owl expects you to be its mate to hoot with them" Indian owl : "Sorry Rajesh, you will get a better OWL than me" Even owls won't give you a chance !!
Native elders would tell you all about it! Why would you want to keep an owl inside a house anyways? You make friends with them. Not make them your pets!🙄
We have 3-4 owls that seem to like my yard and surrounding trees. They are on a regular schedule, as far as when they stay around for a few months. I think they also enjoy the bird feeders that attract smaller birds. Too bad they don't eat the squirrels that are steadily growing in numbers in my neighborhood.
And that you have proper veterinary care available. Most people do not know how to care for them properly, and I have heard from far too many people around the world who have had pet owls, pleading for help when they get sick because they do not have proper veterinary care. In these cases it's the owls who pay the price with their lives just so someone can have a pet owl.
@Lemurian Mapping I believe it is illegal in Canada to have an owl as a pet. Each province has its own laws about owls, but I am not aware of any that allow them to be kept as pets.
"most don't like to be pet and cuddled" there is an exception to this rule...like any bird,if an owl imprints on a person...they will show genuine desires of affection from them, and rather enjoy be pet, groomed and stroked, especially in ereas they cannot reach." while its true you should not keep them as pets, there are a few species that enjoy a sybiotic relationship with humans to the point its possible to befreind and form a bond with wild ones.. barn owls are a good example of this.
This varies by species, and Great Horned Owls do not engage in mutual preening and don't like it. The flip side is that human imprints (like Barn Owls) can be very aggressive with anyone other than the person they are bonded with.
I had a budgie who didn’t like to be petted, but he was otherwise very friendly. He was a very strong flyer and would zip right over and land on over your finger if you whistled for him.
The jungle cats also dont want to be cuddled and hiss at humas, attack with no reason with their big nails and teeths. The owl is same I think. The house cats are not like that. The house cats are made domisticated by humans through thousand of years. If we try, may be owls also can be domisticated one day.
My budgie micheal, Is a lot like an owl, hes loud and destructive. But hes super sweet! Hes skittish but quickly got happy the first day we got him because we USED to have another budgie named slushie, Sadly. Slushie had passed in march 2020. Mike is doin' well though.
I would never have an owl as a pet but bro if you’re trying to tell me that part of Owl Ownership is hooting with with them, I wanna help. I would volunteer to hoot with Owls that would be fun
In falconry can you apprentice with a Eurasion eagle owl or a great horned owl and I came across this one website that said you didn’t need a license to own a eurasion eagle owl can you tell me if that’s true
owls are really cute but maybe I could find a way to attract one to my yard, and have it by my 100 percent outside extremely loosely defined pet that visits sometimes
We have information from many countries about laws, but not the Philippines. You can see what we have here: www.internationalowlcenter.org/regulations.html. Regardless, we strongly discourage keeping owls as pets for all the reasons mentioned here. Even in countries where it is legal, we have gotten many emails from people whose owls get sick and they don't know how to care for them and don't have proper veterinary care, so the owls pay the price and die for peoples' whims to have pet owls.
That is the ideal for sure. It's much harder to attract people to learn more about owls without live owls present, however. So for those we have in captivity, we need to make our education efforts really count.
I cannot believe the arrogance of people who think they have the right to "own" owls. Anything that isn't a dog, cat, or other domesticated animal belongs in the wild and nowhere else PERIOD.
Operative word in that pair of sentences is 'domesticated.' Is owning a wild animal okay? No, it is not. Is owning a tamed animal okay? No, it is not, unless you have certification and/or the circumstance is appropriate. That said, IF we were to domesticate an owl, say... like we domesticated dogs and cats, I don't see what the issue would be with that.
@@InternationalOwlCenter That's not quite the same as it being prohibited to keep owls as pets full stop. In fact, the majority of US states DO permit the keeping of owls as pets with a permit. Some don't even require a permit.
Good luck. Snowy Owls are way way bigger than I thought. There was a male here (found out it was a male recently as the males are mostly white but the females have the black marks.) and I was stunned how big they really are. Not a chance you can build a pen big enough for that animal. Beautiful but stunningly huge.
Best way to have a pet owl: Live near owls in their natural habitat.
There's a red hawk that likes to hang out in my yard and I sort of think of him as my pet in a weird way
@Robert Robertson that sounds awesome. I wish I saw more owls around here
Definitely going to place nest boxes if I'll ever have a garden!
