This was much easier than others indicated. Use very hot water. I filled a small pot with water and put it on the stove at medium/high heat - enough to maintain small bubbles in the water, but not a rolling boil. It stayed there the whole time, so it was always hot enough. Use dish gloves so you don’t burn yourself, and have a towel down like they show you. Soak the tube for 30-60 seconds to soften it before removing it from the nozzle. If you soak it for about a minute in the very hot water, the straw will cut like butter with normal kitchen scissors. When reattaching the straw, slide it on the nozzle until it gets stuck, soak it for up to a minute, then wiggle it on some more. If you get stuck at any point, just stick it back in the pot of very hot water for 30+ seconds. It makes all the difference. I’m not the strongest female around, but I didn’t even have to ask my husband for help. I used a sharpie to mark where I wanted to cut, so I didn’t keep having to measure/soak while cutting. This process is well worth it because now the straws fit me perfectly.
I followed the instructions and it worked. Here are a few tips for anyone who is still struggling; I poured boiling water into a Chilly’s flask to ensure that the water remaining hot throughout. I waited 7 minutes and then took them out one at a time to twist and pull the ends off. I measured 7cms and cut each end, replacing them both in the Chilly’s flask for just a few more minutes. I put a washing up glove on my left hand, then pulled each one out in turn, dried the end first and held it still with my left hand whilst I pushed the stopper back in. It was really quick and super-easy to do. Thanks for the video 🙏
After struggling I found that video and read all comments, very helpful! I let the tubes in very hot water for almost 15 minutes, trying from time to to time and replacing water frequently to keep it very hot. And at one stage the screw went easily! No need to pull just gentle unscrew. Putting the cap back was much more painful...same process backwards during another 15 minutes.
Following the folks in the comments here, I boiled water and filled a ramekin, tried to do it on the bottle attachment end as shown here, but eventually pivoted to the straw end as suggested here. After about 5 min in the boiling water, I used a kitchen towel to grip the plastic end and twist it out and it popped out relatively easily. I cut the straws with a sharp kitchen knife on a cutting board. Another 5 min or so in fresh boiling water, and then I jammed the plastic bits part of the way in. Alternating dipping in the boiling water for 30 second intervals and pushing the plastic bit down directly on the counter while pushing down on the straw and the "putting back on" stage took about 5 minutes. Overall I spent 45-60 minutes from start to finish but probably about 20 minutes from when I switched to the straw end vs. the bottle end, so I would recommend that
I had the same problem BUT I found that pulling of the top part (where you drink from) was super easy to take off. Took 30 sec in water and it was off. Also easy to put on again
I gave myself blistered fingers trying to get the first bottle done. After reading all the wonderful comments my second bottle took me less than 5 mins. I used boiling water from the kettle in a cup, soaked for a minimum of 90 secs, still required some effort to be pulled off though. Cut the length and quickly immersed back into boiling water for 30 secs so it didn't cool off. Used some cooking oil spray on the plastic spike before attempting to reattach the straw and it went on soooo easily. Don't know if this will solve any issues but hope it helps
The process is a lot more difficult than in the video. The hardest part is getting the plastic pieces out of the tube. I used a razor blade to slice the tube vertically off the plastic insert. It comes off very easily. Just be super careful with the razor. Use a towel to protect your fingers and go slow! To reinsert the plastic piece in the adjusted tube, push it in to get it started. Then soak in boiling water for a few minutes. The end easily slides into place. I used dishwashing gloves to get a firm grip, and protect my hands from the heat.
I was also confused. To the people who need help, after soaking in warm water for 30 seconds, reconnect it to the soft flask and then pull it off. then you can cut the straw and put it in warm water again before putting it back on.
While helpful, the process is a lot harder than it looks! How long should one soak in warm water? I've left it there for 10+ minutes and the hose is still very hard to pull off. Thanks in advance.
I have just bought this vest and read all of these comments. Was really worried about cutting the straws.. put the straws in boiling water and managed to get them off easy. Little bit challenging to get them back on but managed it. Just make sure the water is HOT
It worked just fine! Wasn’t as easy as the video made it look, but not as hard as the comments suggested either. Just soaked the straws in hot water and twisted them off. Wearing kitchen gloves helped a lot for grip to put the straws back on.
It’s SUPER helpful to cut the ends closer to the top of the straw (not the ends near the bottles) because when you have to put the straws back on, there’s less to force together. I boiled 2 pots of water and would take one pot off the water and put the end of the straw in for about a min or so, and if I needed to switch over to the other pot for hotter water I could! It took 2-3 tries to get it off and then only really one try to get the piece back on. It really wasn’t as bad as I was expecting based on the comments!!
How can you sell a product for so expensive that we then basically have to ruin just to be able to use it? It is not at all easy to adjust the straws, this video lies.
For everyone struggling to get the darn thing off, where's what helped me: boiled up some water in kettle, let it sit in the water for a minute or so and used a wrench to pull it off. Also helps to use a twisting motion to "unscrew" it off. Also helped to wrap the straw around your hand/fingers to get a better grip. Get it back on was actually much harder.
Much easier: just cut the straw above the attachment thingy, then it’s easy to slice the remaining piece off, cutting vertically. Might need to heat up the tube to get it back on but it’s the removal that’s near impossible
This really is impossible to do alone for me. Had to get my husband, who weights more than twice my weight to do it, and even then we couldn't get the straw all the way back on. Gonna just fold the long straw into the packets or below the cords.
Bought this vest, thought I found a great tip to shorten straws from this video 😢 nope…. almost cut myself and straw just won’t come off ! Now I’m scared after reading all the comments! Help !!!
Looped a string through the top plastic thing for more power to pull - after soaking in boiled water for 5min was able to pull it out with me holding to the straw and my partner pulling the string.
It's a no for me. Just couldn't get it. I'll be folding the straws down like someone else suggested. Edited: ok I just ran with the straws bent. That didn't work because they kept slipping out. So I just tucked them behind the little pocket opening on the shoulder straps. Worked great! Whew!
This was BEYOND frustrating and a reason I WOULD NOT recomendable this vest. My husband and I soaked it forever and COULD NOT get it off. Lost time on my run because you guys made it sounds simple. Please make a video letting everyone know how much harder it is than this. I will not be enjoying my run to the fullest, I will now be running without because I can get the straws back on. Thanks for nothing
Hi, sorry to hear that. If it didn't work the first time, just try to use warmer water and leave the straws soaked for longer. If you need more assistance, contact us! Just follow this link: www.salomon.com/contact Thank you. 👍
Microwave the mouthpiece end inside a coffee cup for 2 minutes. Pull off mouthpiece and cut to length. Reheat cut end and replace mouthpiece. Mouthpiece will come off in two pieces.
Easiest way to do these is to use a pan of boiling water..... Boil the tube/en piece for a few minutes then remove with tongs and hold with towel to the pull... Take extreme caution... They will be hot and there could be boiling water in the tube! After 2mins of boiling they come off with medium force They are far more difficult than they should be! Remember guys/girls.... Measure twice, cut once... You definitely don't wanna be fitting them twice! 😅
This is way harder than it looks. They must've changed the size of the tube in manufacturing. Absolutely ridiculous, Boiling water and a knife to slice it down... there's no way to get the straw fully back on again.
Agree that this is helpful, but much harder than it looks.

That was wild! Thanks to the commets I managed to put those fuckers off by using a lot of boiling water and prying it with a knife. Putting those straws back on was hella of a ride too!
I could not pull the straw off. Ended up cutting it open with a razor. But now I cannot put it back on either, I managed to push it over the first two notches but it will not go further in no matter how hard I push!
I held mine in a pan of constantly boiling water for about 10-15 mins. Then pushed on (with a towel) about half way. Then back in the pan, then managed to get it on the whole way. What a drama!
I don't know what temperature of water this person is using but it is not at all that easy! I've just spent an hour and managed to mostly get 1 straw done. The other, just wouldn't come off without using tools to stretch it, and now it won't go back on.

Not as easy as the clip makes out at all. Did manage it eventually and with alot of effort! Bet we all cut about the same amount of straw off (it's not like the other style of flask is adjustable), just sayin!
This is not nearly as easy as portrayed in this video. Also, if you buy the straws separately, there is no instruction on how actually put the straws on existing bottles.
Hi, we're sorry to hear that! Please give us a call, so we can guide you through the process. Just follow this link: www.salomon.com/contact Thank you. 👍
The instructions do not work! DO NOT buy this vest! I tried all suggestions in the comments as well. I contacted Salomon customer service and they provided zero help. They were unwilling to admit that there is a design flaw. They even claimed thousands of people found this video be helpful. They should not be saying you can easily cut the straws in the vest description!
