Sonic Black & White is a ROM hack of Sonic the Hedghog that features new palette, audio, zone layout and special stage modifications, in addition to new gameplay mechanics. In each stage, collecting rings will gradually restore the proper color and sound to the vicinity. Collect as many as you can! Made by TheInvisibleSun.

How bloody ridiculous! The idea that any entity can come on here and claim ownership of the audio is disgusting. Unless it's Masato Nakamura or Sega, no one else has the right to mute the audio.

This is a very interesting concept, I especially like how the music interacts with the core mechanic of the hack. I think if it was just fleshed out a little more it would be great.
Hearing the music fade in as rings are collected really makes you realize how important each instrument is

This concept reminded me *a lot* of another ROM hack that I'd seen in years past, so I did some digging. Turns out that this hacker also made _Sonic 1: Color Contrast,_ which is remarkably similar to this in many ways. I thought that they had completely scrapped the project, but it turns out that it was just extensively reworked. Great find, and thanks for posting this.
It's actually a totally different project; some day I'll revisit Color Contrast. Some day...

Everything is black and white because Sega is sad that someone died but everytime sonic collects a ring Sega gets more happy.

This is cool, I vividly remember making an old palette hack of Sonic 1 to make it black and white. And to see that in action with gimmicks and everything really makes me feel good.

I remember playing a demo of this hack and loving it, so it’s awesome that it’s a finished hack.

This is actually one of the more creative Sonic ROM hacks.
The concept of this hack making the levels completely empty and devoid of any real qualities and then giving them more life as you collect more rings kind of makes me appreciate the visuals and music of the original game even more now. Like, you really don't understand just how much better they make the game feel until you play without them.
I love this concept or rings restoring color and songs. I haven't seen any eninies, but I'd know the pain of that if they existed

I remember in Bart's Nightmare losing all your zeds in Windy World would cause a similar effect, the colour would disappear and the instruments would fade leaving only the percussion. I wonder if the concept was used from that game?
