The way you talk about those plants is just incredible 😊Recently I've bought one grown strelitzia from a person who didn't know how to maintain it and I'm currently trying to fix her up. But today I've found that a new leaf died and has rotten inside another leaf, without even showing, so I didn't know it was there. I hope mine will be as grand as yours one day! 4:30 the growth you mention are petiole sheaths - leftover from when that leaf was the middle one / newest. While a new leaf did indeed grow from there, it will not grow another as strelitzia grow from the centre of the plant. New shoots are likely to grow from the bottom or the side, though

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the comment. I have been growing strelitzia for more then 30 years now and in my experience when the plant is not established and it hasn’t grown fully to its fan like shape then the growth is mainly from the center but once the plant is fully grown and the fan is done, the leaf will start to get older die out and be replaced by new leaves coming by side shoot of each old leaf. This is a constant renewal the plant does and continues throughout its life. Petiole sheath I see them more in my Colacasias plants. Right now I am growing 4 strelitzias at home. 3 are reginae and 1 is a nicolai and both do the same. The new leaves grows from within an old steam not necessarily from the center trunk. Again the new leaves coming from the center happen more at the beginning when the plant is a baby growing to its full potential. Back in Puerto Rico at my house we have lots of strelitzias growing like wildfire I love them so much and they have always done this. I will make another video in the future with a time lapse of the growth that might help. Thank you again for your comment. I can see you are passionate about plants just like me. @@YalisCommunity That would be a video to watch! :) I don't live in an appropriate, so haven't had a fully mature strelitzia yet. Anyway, looking forward to the timelapse, it will be good to see the mature growth pattern.

Thank you.💚

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Paul Jarvis for your kind comment! It makes me so happy that you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! I wish your plant a prompt recovery from the mealy bug. You are certainly treating your plant well. The leaves of the Bird of Paradise are very smooth and easy to clean so you can create the habit of cleaning it once or twice a week also keep it away from vents this leads to more mealy bugs and check for the soil. Sometimes we have removed all the bug from the plant but they are still on the soil. If this is the case you will need to repot it into another pot with new soil free of bugs ... but before doing this maintain it clean and use the hand garden tool that I used hear and aerate the soil as much as you can. I swear I do this to all of my plants and I think that this is why I do not get bugs. In another of my videos for the colacasia plant I showed a product that I use to keep the leaves shiny and clean. I use it occasionally because I like to keep everything organic but I have certainly found it helpful in keeping my plants clean of diseases. Its called ultra leaf shine by masters. I used to use it when I worked as a florist in my younger days and is something that had stick with me. Hope this helps. Thank you for being part of the Community! Welcome!

      @@pauljarvis7386 I understand it can be scary. If you ever get to transplant them it is okay if some roots brake off this will not affect the plant as long as it is not the main trunk (the biggest roots usually in the center). Your plant is wonderful, it is the most beautiful plant
    I live in the eastern country of Iraq and it is very hot and I own it, but its leaves appear in strange colors?
    And another problem is that I suddenly lost many of them?? I do not know why ?
    And now I have little, unfortunately, because it is rare in our country

    • @YalisCommunity
      @YalisCommunity  Před 2 lety

      Hi Saif Salah! Thank you for the kind comment and I am sorry to hear your plant is not doing well. I suggest if you have it planted directly in the soil/ or in a pot, remove the main plant and check the root system. If you are getting constantly many leaf changes and falling it might be a worm or any other pest. You can also check the plant directly and see if it has any plant spider mites, just wash the plant well ( sometimes is better to just use a wet cloth and wipe the leaves with this, that way no mites fall on the soil). This plant loves water but not tooo much, follow the advice from the video. Wishing you the best in your journey growing the strelitzia! Thank you for being part of the Community and May you have a wonderful day!

      Hi there! Quick answer is yes! Just remember to cut as suggested, cut away from the base and making sure to cut above any new shoots coming from the stem that you are cutting. If the stem is all dry up then you can cut all the way to the base. Hope this helps. Thank you for your comment and being part of the Community! May you have an awesome day.
