Um at the time of this recording she was singing at the met on an almost seasonal basis and frankly not making that much of a impression. And the only reason she decided not to sing there after 1994 was because her husband became basically bedridden and she didn't want to be outside of Italy for more than a certain period of time. That and the fact that the met didn't do much of repertoire outside of the basic bel canto things. I saw most of her performances there and nothing she did was in any way shape or form as good as what she did elsewhere. So the idea that she snubbed the met because she was better off is bull. They gave her many opportunities, it just never came together and then personal stuff caused her to re-arrange her priorities. And frankly we were not lacking in great bel canto singers at that time.

Devia's voice isn't as beautiful as Sutherland's nor is her technique as superlative, but she always manages to deliver the goods. And her top is solid, never horribly wobbly like the much-overrated Callas.

Whenever i have heard Dessay sing this ,she sounds as though she is angry and struggling to hit the higher notes and her singing is more like screaming.This role is not for her,she is better in lighter roles.
