Nessuna cantante (renata tebaldi esclusa) ha tutte "note belle" nella propria estensione vocale, non la callas, non la caballe, né tantomeno la sutherland (gruberova nn ha proprio una voce migliore oltre a sparire completamente nel confronto vocale con Mariella). Le note di mariella che vanno dal mezzoforte al sovracuto oltre che tecnicamente perfette "suonano" anche in maniera sublime, di una purezza ed incisività immacolate che nessuna riesce a cui nessuna si riesce sd avvicinare.

Tecnicamente eccellente. Nessuna anche tra le più famose interpreti di quest'aria, fa sentire insieme questa dizione, la differenza tra colorature legata della prima strofa e staccata della seconda, tra la voce piena e la ripresa in "eco lontano", il nitore perfetto dei trilli, in una quadratura ritmica perfetta. Il fraseggio però manca di luce di follia, il calore di questa innamorata è tutto affidato al caldo brunito del timbro, ma è l'affetto della moglie, non dell'innamorata lasciva che si getta tra le braccia del bellissimo e sconosciuto straniero (che in realtà in modo ambiguo e intrigante è una donna) appena sbarcato su un'isola incantata e stregata dal desiderio di eterna giovinezza e bellezza. Questa sensazione è confermata dalla rinuncia a salire al mi bem. nella volatina finale ma anche da un accompagnamento orchestrale troppo regolare, un po' lento e con poca fantasia. Comunque una grandissima Mariella, vocalmente eccellente, ma che altrove sa rendere un senso tragico del personaggio di tutt'altra caratura.

Una voce stupenda, fuori di questo mondo. Prima ho messo un comento stupido sopra lei che lo faceva meglio Dessay, tutte e due lo cantano benissimo, ovviamente Devvia ha una voce piu oscura e grande. Meravigliosa.
Wonderful voice and talent! Glorious singing! But don't we all have our favourites? For me Joan Sutherland is superlative -- she has a warmer, rounder sound. But I should say that the artistry shown by both (agility of voice) is comparable.
Joan Sutherland had a great allure to her, People enjoyed seeing her perform regardless of her diction or acting ability. Her voice was enough to capture the audience and give them somthing to remember. Maria Devia is a very good singer, but her voice is not Joan Sutherland. Again music is not just singing with diction but its a diversified language in itself. Sutherland made the rep come alive regardless of her diction, This made her great and thats why both wealthy and common people love her.
Wonderfull, lovely sound...Not the voluptuous, virtuosic, brilliance of Sutherland in her Handelian prime, but a worthy competitor never the less...Brava Diva Devia.

Nel fraseggio che è importantissimo per l'azione e il pathos melodrammatico lasciava a desiderare... e in un'analisi storica del bel canto le verrà rimproverato Sempre .La mia osservazione non ne fa una cantante Comune...ma con dei limiti che lei sottolinea a torto in Chi canta la partitura come è scritta...senza trucchi e inganni per ovviare alla mancanza di studio o per nascondere pecche se la memoria la tradisce...A Roma in una recita di Lucrezia Borgia ebbe difficoltà che rischiarono di rovinare uno spettacolo peraltro molto bello. A Bologna una Ricciarelli ancora in forma...la surclassava......La signora Devia in Italia ha portato in auge le tre Regine donizettiane...e Lucrezia Borgia...come forse in Teatro non sono mai state fatte; avendo i consigli della Genger che con una voce piccola faceva miracoli e riusciva a fare i recitativi come un'attrice avendo avuto come consigliera la Callas..... la Devia... a quasi sessant'anni; ha cantato una Norma autorevole...e credibilissima. Mi stia bene ...le opere non sono dei fans Scalmanati...ma dei musicisti e degli interpreti senza i quali ...le partiture rimarrebbero mute....non me ne voglia...ma certe frasi non si possono leggere e se ne è capace...argomenti...ho già il colapasta in testa.... un caro saluto...
Sometimes I feel she's slowing down the orchestra and in some parts it's opposite. Neverthless, her voice is heavenly soft and her technique brilliant. I can't resist to compare her to Joan Stherland.
Un'interpretazione apparentemtemete meno veloce,brillante e squillante di altre, ma in realta' carica di variazioni tecniche che rendono il brano non ripetitivo e musicalmente piu' interessante delle altre interpretazioni; oltre ad avere una dizione perfetta, non trovabile nelle cantanti straniere che mangiano le parole . La tonalita' scura della voce aggiunge potere ad un testo, che rappresenta un'amante matura e sicura di se stessa. Tali brani, vivono vita a se stante e non devono necessariamente essere interpretati a seconda di schemi operatici fissi (Io dedico questo capolavoro amoroso, al mio scomparso marito, con tanta nostalgia)

Per quanto riguarda questa aria la signora Devia forse non dà il massimo, ma tra dire che in genere fa miracoli e dire che qui è noiosa ci passa un oceano... esistono anche le vie di mezzo. Most people I ask said Joan Sutherland. Again Diction is not everything when it comes to singing, but it is how well you are ablt to capture the audience. If you have great diction and the audience is sleep, then you are singing to yourself and the walls.
Ella es una extraordinaria soprano bel cantista pero tiene ciertas dificultades en la coloratura. No es muy ágil en esa parte. Pero en el drama en cambio no hay quién la iguale.
Mariella Devia nunca ha tenido ninguna dificultad para colorear y hay muchos ejemplos aquí en youtube. El tiempo de la coloratura (si no lo sabes) es lento porque ES EL CONDUCTOR EL QUE DA ESTE TIEMPO !!!! Cantar en este tempo lento es mucho más difícil y, a pesar de esto, esta interpretación es perfecta. while i agree with you that she is talented i agree with dgviktor, i have seen her live at the MET and honestly sometimes she looks like she is having a seizure. voice is spectacular so i dont mind and she most of the time can maek it work, like in her lucia but not all the time
I understand what you are saying and I respect what you are saying,But its not about just having a big voice. Joan Sutherland voice is pure as silk and big. She can do things that Devia could only wish of. Although I hearing what you are saying but I have recently asked people and they prefered sutherland over Devia . Just to listen to sutherland voice alone, makes it better even if there was no rep. From my understanding, Devia tryed to mimic sutherland's voice while adding Callas diction.
being the professional you are? of what exactly? mado robin in a league of her own? for what exactly? scooping sovracuti out of style? Baroque is not Devia's area of expertise but she is one of the most prominent Bel Canto singers in history. a true coloratura with stunning technique, control and diction (unlike Sutherland!) Being a professional as you claim to be, you shouldn't even compare a wagnerian soprano, a lyric, a dramatic coloratura etc. PARVENU that's what you are.
you are such a Die hard fan of Devia, Again I not trying to discredit her so you dont need to bash me. Im just stating the fact that they are better. They are far more famous than she is. As far as the voice, Devia has an excellent voice its just does not have the appeal to most audiences of opera. Im certain that she would get great crouds of people around her but not the crouds that the others would get. for example. Eva Turner is still asscociated with turandot.
devia is better , by far, than Rona. The Rona's voice need more open pharynx, chiaroscuro and squillo. Rona's technique is more a pop lyric adaptation of "traditional technique"

N. Dessay = she behaves on stage as if she had a permanent seizure + she makes grimaces and other exaggerated facial expressions = simply awful. Devia = sings pleasantly this interpretation is pure delight. Baroque operas should be sung with proper dignity and humility not like today: as fast as you can + theres a tendency to make certain pieces sound like hardrock songs(bartoli and co)

You would know that Joan Sutherland is a great singer and is from the Golden Age. Montseratt Caballe said that her voice is like Heaven. Luciano Pavorroti said that her voice is like it the voice of the century. Joan Sutherland is a Dame and is also known as "La Stupenda".
I never said that Devia cound not sand, but Leontyne Price, Joan Sutherland, Birgit Nilsson, Maria Callas, Renate Tebaldi, Mado Robin, Eva Tuner and Kirsten Flagstag were all in anouther league above Devia, I did tno say this bit for centuries people have raved about there voices and Devia was only in the shadows of them. Sutherland is better than Mariella Devia. Sutherland has a bigger voice than Devia and Much more people would rather listen to Joan Sutherland than Devia. If their was a concert to be held by both soopranos,singing the same reptior on the same day and time. Sutherland would have more fans support than Devia. well being the professional that I am, I have to say that devia has a good voice, however she does not stand a chance against Joan Sutherland, I would have to to say devia is out of her league when it comes to Sutherland and all the other great performers such as Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, and Mado Robin. @@Dadacomero ...mi permetta di farle notare che una cantante non è una romanza....ma una carriera!!... quando Tullio Serafin la aiutò a levarsi la h...che metteva davanti alle a....e a non intubare da mezzosoprano come faceva con Lucia...a Venezia la Sutherland cantò un' Alcina scintillante ...e si capiva tutto il testo...poi non so cosa le sia successo cominciò a usare un italiano improbabile. Potrà essere perdonato da orecchie anglosassoni..ma oggi la Sills...la Horne la Verret ..la Cabajelle, ma la stessa Janet Backer erano regine di dizione e fraseggio... la Sutherland levata la terza superiore e i sovracuti in tasca.... Nel fraseggio che è importantissimo per l'azione e il pathos melodrammatico lasciava a desiderare... e in un'analisi storica del bel canto le verrà rimproverato Sempre .La mia osservazione non ne fa una cantante Comune...ma con dei limiti che lei sottolinea a torto in Chi canta la partitura come è scritta...senza trucchi e inganni per ovviare alla mancanza di studio o per nascondere pecche se la memoria la tradisce...A Roma in una recita di Lucrezia Borgia ebbe difficoltà che rischiarono di rovinare uno spettacolo peraltro molto bello. A Bologna una Ricciarelli ancora in forma...la surclassava......La signora Devia in Italia ha portato in auge le tre Regine donizettiane...e Lucrezia Borgia...come forse in Teatro non sono mai state fatte; avendo i consigli della Genger che con una voce piccola faceva miracoli e riusciva a fare i recitativi come un'attrice avendo avuto come consigliera la Callas..... la Devia... a quasi sessant'anni; ha cantato una Norma autorevole...e credibilissima. Mi stia bene ...le opere non sono dei fans Scalmanati...ma dei musicisti e degli interpreti senza i quali ...le partiture rimarrebbero mute....non me ne voglia...ma certe frasi non si possono leggere e se ne è capace...argomenti...ho già il colapasta in testa.... un caro saluto...

Sometimes I feel she's slowing down the orchestra and in some parts it's opposite. Neverthless, her voice is heavenly soft and her technique brilliant. I can't resist to compare her to Joan Stherland.

Un'interpretazione apparentemtemete meno veloce,brillante e squillante di altre, ma in realta' carica di variazioni tecniche che rendono il brano non ripetitivo e musicalmente piu' interessante delle altre interpretazioni; oltre ad avere una dizione perfetta, non trovabile nelle cantanti straniere che mangiano le parole .
La tonalita' scura della voce aggiunge potere ad un testo, che rappresenta un'amante matura e sicura di se stessa.
Tali brani, vivono vita a se stante e non devono necessariamente essere interpretati a seconda di schemi operatici fissi

@madziua90 no no è molto buono,non ti preoccupare. be' che dire?trovo la Devia notevolmente superiore alla Dessay tecnicamente parlando- Natalie non mi piace per niente in questo repertorio, e non la trovo così eccelsa in genere, ma è questione di gusti. Per quanto riguarda questa aria la signora Devia forse non dà il massimo, ma tra dire che in genere fa miracoli e dire che qui è noiosa ci passa un oceano... esistono anche le vie di mezzo. E ce ne fossero di noiose come lei di questi tempi :)

Iosonmedea and viafilodrammatic, I need to ake this question to you, If you were to have sutherland and Devia to perform near you in the prime voice, performing the same rep,at the same time, which would you go to see and why. Most people I ask said Joan Sutherland. Again Diction is not everything when it comes to singing, but it is how well you are ablt to capture the audience. If you have great diction and the audience is sleep, then you are singing to yourself and the walls.
Ella es una extraordinaria soprano bel cantista pero tiene ciertas dificultades en la coloratura. No es muy ágil en esa parte. Pero en el drama en cambio no hay quién la iguale.
Mariella Devia nunca ha tenido ninguna dificultad para colorear y hay muchos ejemplos aquí en youtube.
El tiempo de la coloratura (si no lo sabes) es lento porque ES EL CONDUCTOR EL QUE DA ESTE TIEMPO !!!! Cantar en este tempo lento es mucho más difícil y, a pesar de esto, esta interpretación es perfecta.
Ps: Si Devia hubiera tenido dificultades para colorear, ¿podría haber hecho esto alguna vez?

while i agree with you that she is talented i agree with dgviktor, i have seen her live at the MET and honestly sometimes she looks like she is having a seizure. voice is spectacular so i dont mind and she most of the time can maek it work, like in her lucia but not all the time

I understand what you are saying and I respect what you are saying,But its not about just having a big voice. Joan Sutherland voice is pure as silk and big. She can do things that Devia could only wish of. Although I hearing what you are saying but I have recently asked people and they prefered sutherland over Devia . Just to listen to sutherland voice alone, makes it better even if there was no rep. From my understanding, Devia tryed to mimic sutherland's voice while adding Callas diction.

Baroque is not Devia's area of expertise but she is one of the most prominent Bel Canto singers in history. a true coloratura with stunning technique, control and diction (unlike Sutherland!)
Being a professional as you claim to be, you shouldn't even compare a wagnerian soprano, a lyric, a dramatic coloratura etc.

you are such a Die hard fan of Devia, Again I not trying to discredit her so you dont need to bash me. Im just stating the fact that they are better. They are far more famous than she is. As far as the voice, Devia has an excellent voice its just does not have the appeal to most audiences of opera. Im certain that she would get great crouds of people around her but not the crouds that the others would get.
for example. Eva Turner is still asscociated with turandot.

devia is better , by far, than Rona. The Rona's voice need more open pharynx, chiaroscuro and squillo. Rona's technique is more a pop lyric adaptation of "traditional technique"

Personally i think she just kept working at her voice ..
N. Dessay = she behaves on stage as if she had a permanent seizure + she makes grimaces and other exaggerated facial expressions = simply awful. Devia = sings pleasantly this interpretation is pure delight. Baroque operas should be sung with proper dignity and humility not like today: as fast as you can + theres a tendency to make certain pieces sound like hardrock songs(bartoli and co)
Esecuzione perfetta ma che non concede nulla al pubblico. Nella cadenza finale mi aspettavo che sviluppasse ulteriormente quella già sublime della Sutherland....peccato.

You would know that Joan Sutherland is a great singer and is from the Golden Age. Montseratt Caballe said that her voice is like Heaven. Luciano Pavorroti said that her voice is like it the voice of the century. Joan Sutherland is a Dame and is also known as "La Stupenda".

I never said that Devia cound not sand, but Leontyne Price, Joan Sutherland, Birgit Nilsson, Maria Callas, Renate Tebaldi, Mado Robin, Eva Tuner and Kirsten Flagstag were all in anouther league above Devia, I did tno say this bit for centuries people have raved about there voices and Devia was only in the shadows of them. Again I belive that you need to lean more becuase evidently im not talking about just Baroque music but just a better voice period regardless of tessatura or role.

Sutherland is better than Mariella Devia. Sutherland has a bigger voice than Devia and Much more people would rather listen to Joan Sutherland than Devia. If their was a concert to be held by both soopranos,singing the same reptior on the same day and time. Sutherland would have more fans support than Devia. Again Devia is good but she dont stand a chance with Dame Joan Sutherland ( and that a fact). Devia's compotition is more of Renata Scotto or sumi joe.
This aria is supposed to be a flirtation. All I hear in this performance is an orchestrated vocalise.
Cabelle,Calas,Gruberova and Scotto has all said that Joan Sutherland voice is big and pure. Cabele even sid that its like heaven. Please dont mislead people with limited information. Joan Sutherland is Great and will alays be. Devia has to learn how to sore like Joan Sutheland, Birgit Nilsson, Kirsten Flagstag,Leontyne Price,Maria Callas and Renata tebaldi. This are the prima voices. Devia cant match any of the voices.

well being the professional that I am, I have to say that devia has a good voice, however she does not stand a chance against Joan Sutherland, I would have to to say devia is out of her league when it comes to Sutherland and all the other great performers such as Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, and Mado Robin. So their is no comparison when it comes to Devia and these other great artist. Becuase the artist mentioned above are in another relm that is higher than hers
