Not if it is fun to the people doing it or if it serves some other purpose like developing language skills or maybe it is rational to one person in the debate and not another because one is enjoying annoying the other. To really know if something is irrational you have to know the desires of the people involved and then apply logic to see if the behavior is consistent with the desires. Claiming the desires of people are right or wrong is not an argument about rationality but simply asserting dominance over other people.

I'd say critical thinking is a subset of rationality, synonymous with skepticism. One can be skeptical and not necessarily rational. Rational means striving to attain the most accurate view of reality possible. Critical thinking / skepticism means investigating claims and reevaluating beliefs to better ensure they are accurate, instead of just believing whatever you hear. That's how I view the terms at least.

I see it the other way around to you. I see rationality as an intellectual tool used in critical thinking. In the example Julia gives, rationality wasn't employed effectively. It may have been employed on the small scale for the sub goals for the ultimate goal of making the restaurant decision, but rationality wasn't used on the larger scale on the ultimate goal of achieving a restaurant decision within time limits.

Andrew McAuliffe I see epistemic rationality as the principle of taking all available information into account prior to making a decision or reaching a conclusion (meaning you're not leaving anything out due to negligence or bias). In this example, I would say the time it takes to analyze all of the information and the limit of time available to complete the task were factors left out of the equation, so in a sense it was not a rational course of action.
Thats something I find funny about people who criticize rational decision-making - you have to account for *all* of the available information, including the time it takes to process it all! Sometimes, an incomplete estimate with a spice of uncertainty is the best possible course.

Rationality simply refers to thinking in "inferential chains"--in other words, thinking along the lines of how formal logic works: If P then Q. P. Therefore Q.
Critical thinking refers to analyzing something, especially claims that someone is making, where you're looking for errors/fallacies they might have made, unanalyzed/unrealized assumptions, and so on.

Hmm, it gives a nice example of a difference but
it was rational in an epistemic way - based on the goal being concluding the best restaurant, period (with no further goals or restrictions, like available time).
However, it was indeed not instrumentally rational - based on the goal of concluding the best restaurant _and_ within a certain time-limit, so they could actually eat there that night.
So, you could say that rationality (colloquially used) is practical (goal-oriented)
and critical thinking is epistemological and analytical.

I'm so pleased you are back! Finding your 'What is Rationality' video substantially changed my life--providing the tipping point that helped me go from vaguely transitioning from Christianity into a sort of deism, to embracing atheism. Your video that helped me 'steep my mind' in Bayes Rule, helped me later explain my decision to my family in such a way that half of them were able to make the break as well. Certainly Hitchens, Dawkins, and Harris helped after the fact, but it was your videos I found first. I cannot fully articulate how much lighter and less stressful my life became when I woke up to reality.

Hey Julia. Great videos as always, but I do have a question and some general comments. In the rational and skeptical circles why is it that I never hear the names Dr. Richard Paul and Dr. Linda Elder? Both have been collaborating on the concept of critical thinking for over 30 years. When I made my journey to be a more rational person about 4 years ago I started looking around at different people’s perspective on how to be more rational and logical and what these terms even mean. In my opinion the term "critical thinking" as used by Dr. Paul and Dr. Elder captures what it means to be rational the best. So in a very brief, rough, nutshell I would like to take a stab at the relationship between critical thinking and rationality. Critical thinking is the process of analyzing and evaluating your thinking with the view of improving the decisions you make. Rational is what you call someone who is using this process. I wouldn’t say the person in your example is using very good critical thinking skills because they haven’t successfully considered the standard of significance. Meaning at some point they should have asked themselves "How long should I deliberate on this issue before making a decision?" Anyways I’m a big fan of you and all the other big names pushing for reason and keep on keepin on sister haha

I've always understood "rational" as trusting logic and facts over emotions and wishful thinking, when making decisions. Critical thinking requires logical patterns of thought and the examination of the available evidence. As far as I understand, being rational means that you trust your critical thinking over your emotional impulses. I'm sure you know that these two patterns of thought can be traced to different areas of the brain, and having a "gut feeling" feels very different from carefully weighing the options. We all use both systems for making decisions, when it's appropriate and when it's not. In your example, going with the gut would have been the right option. However, I think a more typical example would be spending an afternoon reading reviews and choosing what camera you'd like to buy, then going to the store and buying something else because one of the salesmen persuaded you, only to come home and regret your purchase. Critical thinking is too scarce to complain about it's occasional abuse, as in your example.

Critical thinking seems to be about a method to dissect patterns and unravel accessible true statements and logical relationships between them. But ultimately, rationality seems to be about making a decision about something (going to such and such restaurant or believing in something) by taking the most "logical" path (in fact, a rationalist will always try to maximize utility). Pascal's wager was rational for instance.

Interesting analogy but I'm not sure I agree with you, at least based on the content of this video.
In so far as the analogy goes it seems to exclude the time constraint of "going out for dinner tonight" in the build up to the evaluation. There is no reason why that could not have been a piece of information used to constrain the time taken in making the evaluation.
The way I see it is that rationality, or the act/quality of being rational, is to do things in such a way that they be considered logical. I.e.: they conform to accepted logical axioms.
Critical thinking can be described as a process of evaluation that one engages in in order to make a judgement. I.e.: the acquisition and consideration of information with respect to certain goals or questions.
If an evaluation is not logical (rational) you may draw incorrect conclusion/s, or by chance draw correct conclusion/s but with no valid and/or sound reason/s for how you got there.
In my view, critical thinking is a rational (or logical)l analysis of some set of information while rationality is a term we use to describe someone/something being rational.
Why engage in an evaluation that consumes time and energy if you are not wanting to arrive at the correct, or at the very least the best possible conclusion?

An elegant illustration for encapsulating her point. However, I proffer that these two entities (rationality and critical thinking) can be exchanged in this illustration. Certainly the point made that it's possible with critical thinking alone to over-focus to the point of losing sight of the necessary overall picture, can also interpreted as to potentially apply to any rational process, up to an including rationality itself. But the argument being subtly interwoven into this illustration is the assertion that rationality, being the bigger picture itself, can never allow such oversights. And therefore, to rephrase this, rationality is an ideal by way of definition, such that when properly followed can never unwittingly stumble into unwitting error. Thus to err is to fail to be rational. And to fail to be rational is to err. In other words, rationality has no limitations to it. However this is a kind of circular reasoning, which prompts me to realize the deity-like absoluteness which rationalists ascribe to rationality; as though it is something transcendental and above any (otherwise human) limitation. Yes, there is some critical thinking happening here. But at least by the circular argument derived from the illustration in this video, it seems as though the speaker's position is such that there is no other lens through which anyone who values rationality must view it.

Rationality includes adaptability, which dictates that our thinking needs to be modified to keep up with change - in this case time.

So, the intense, exhaustive, contemplation (itself) on a specific question is demonstrative of critical thinking, but the disregard for the proportionality and the end result are demonstrative of the rationality (or, rather, the lack thereof more precisely).
Moral: Don’t leave all the critical thinking to irrational people, perhaps?

I've noticed that most models of rationality rely on the assumption that some choices or some actions have more value than others. (For example, economists assign value to options based on their "utility", making it the economic unit of value.) It seems to me that the important question is not, at root, what action is or is not "rational" per se, nor is it about which choice has more value, but it centers around the very idea of value itself. Value, itself, is not rational. The value of an object or an action is in the future; namely, how the object or action affects the chooser subsequent to the choice being made. That is to say, the rational chooser is attempting to predict the future value of that object or action, and since the future hasn't happened yet at the point of choosing, that prediction can only be made using historical data and information. That sifting of historical data and information, that is the act of critical thinking. The actual necessity of predicting future value, or the necessity of critical thinking, that is rationality. Visualize it this way: a rock is not in need of making choices, because it exists at the whim of outside forces, but a fly has internal forces and motivations behind its behaviors. If the fly simply moves around aimlessly, choosing objects and actions at random, then it is no more rational than the rock, because the results of its behaviors are indistinguishable from that of the rock. But if the fly does make determined choices in its motion based on perceived value, then it is, as I explained above, attempting to predict the result of its choices, and at that point the fly is acting rationally. So the distinction between irrational and rational behavior is like that of the rock and the random fly, whose behavior is no wiser than the rock, versus the fly that is making valued choices. That's rationality. Critical thinking, on the other hand, is the actual process by which said fly would go about selecting options based on perceived value; therefore, critical thinking is the analytical processing of historical data for the purpose of acting rationally. Now, imagine a hammer and a nail. Rationality is the act of striking the nail more often than not (as opposed to striking the nail no more or less than would be expected by random chance), and critical thinking is the method by which the hammer achieves greater and greater accuracy of striking that nail.

***** Again, you're making the mistake of presuming what it means to value something. Nothing has intrinsic value. Indeed, it could even be said that nothing actually has a value until an animated being is motivated to acknowledge its existence. That is to say, we imbue something with value simply by designating it as a selectable option. The act (choice), itself, defines the quality (value), and the process (rationality) prescribes the method of selection (critical thinking).

Tal Moore Intrinsic Value lets see.... Water, Food, Air. No Motivation to Acknowledge there Existence Needed when Biological Mechanisms Automatically/Naturally take care of that. Life would not exist without them. You have No Choice in this matter if You want to be in front of your computer right now reading this. What is the point of Life if Death is Equal in Value? I'm pretty sure you Value Life over Death Right?
In Essence, We Value Life for Any of This to even be happening. To Value Death more is an Illogical premise because you will need to experience Life First to even be able to consider this notion.
"Nothing has intrinsic value" Unless You where able to choose to be Born, Your Life is Intrinsically Valuable and Important for You to be able to Experience that Mind of yours. ;-))
