At the start of the film of the 72 southern 500 it shows some fans in the stands at the start of the race,the man holding a cigarette with a white shirt an black glasses is my daddy,I was there but was just a few months old,my mom had to take me out because of the noise.
I was there in April of 1977. Stationed at Cherry Point NC I WAS going home for the weekend when I saw 3 Marine friends trying to all get on 1 Harley Davidson motorcycle and I yelled YOUS CAN'T DO THAT, & and they said WE'RE GOING TO DARLINGTON 1 WAY OR ANOTHER & I asked IS that NASCAR? YES, YOU DIG NASCAR? So we all piled into my 1967 Chevy Impala and we drove SOUTHBOUND. WE were 3rd in line to get inside the track when it opened. Cost $10. for ALL of Us. We went and parked on the 3rd turn. What a GREAT TIME we had. Good Ole Boys shared their WHITE LIGHTING and smoke to. Big REBEL FLAGS and 1 big party for 2 days. I've been to 4 total races BUT nothing topped this.
This was the 7th out of 30 races for the 1977 NASCAR Cup Series. Here's the top drivers in points BEFORE the race: · Yarborough (1065, 4 wins, Chevrolet) · Petty (-120, 2 wins, Dodge) · Waltrip (-139, Chevrolet) · Baker (-145, almost 1 race behind, Ford) · Parsons (-233, Chevrolet) · Marcis (-283, Chevrolet) · Childress (-317, around 2 races behind, Chevrolet) · Gordon (-326, Chevrolet) Bobby Allison was 11th with his Matador
Excellent race. DW's first super speedway win, the late J.D. Mcduffie, Bobby driving the 1 for Donnie. Pearson would would drive the 1 a few years later and also four races in the 2 for an injured Earnhardt claiming top 5s and a win as well.
I laughed so hard @18:29 when Chris Economacki asked Waltrip about being a college graduate. DW looked so surprised (and so was i) lol. I don't think Darrell even attended college (much less graduate). But, something i learned recently about DW DOES impress me, i read an old article quoting wife Stevie (Waltrip) as saying Darrell took basic training at Fort ? during the Vietnam war.
That threw me for a loop too. Doing some research, Bobby did sub for Donnie. That finish I also had to rewatch several times to figure out where Darrell was in relation to Bobby and David, as the broadcast did not pick up right away Darrell had passed both of them. I have heard of the whole "gentleman's agreement" about holding position racing back to the yellow, but with very few laps remaining that went out the window... and Darrell didn't slow down as much, therefore getting to the start finish line first by at least half a car length.
@@JesusTapdancingChristOnaCross I think gentlemans agreement was in force but not on the last lap. Since this was likely the end of the race he passed. Dangerous , yes by todays standard but that was racing back then. I LOVE IT!!!!
Well this was certainly a treat! 🤤 Ol' King Richard had his usual luck at Darlington, BAD! The Leader of The Alabama Gang had his usual luck everywhere it seem's, BAD! The Silver Fox, who didn't suffer too much bad luck at Darlington, certainly suffered some in this race ( damn that Man was so tough at Darlington! ) Then there's Ol' DW showing the world exactly why the old guard didn't cotton to him, those old Cup car's were so dangerous & the old guard raced hard in them, but they raced clean & took care of each other on-track, but DW took chance's The OG saw as reckless, which put them all at risk ( See the finish of the 81 Busch Clash for example of said recklessness 😉 ) Oh well, all's well that end's well, at least for DW in this race anyway.

Trying to call it a rebel race now days they slapped with a lawsuit I sure miss the old days
I used to love going to Darlington. I last went in 2016. In my opinion, it is the best track for old-school-racing still on the NASCAR schedule.

Amazing that this remains today! One might think that video tape is endless back in those days but it is very hard to find or come by.
