  • Overnight trip. I take a traditional wooden boat down river, find a location and start building a lean-to shelter from natural materials - no rope or nails. Open the full video description for more information.
This is par 1. All episodes can you see here • Bushcraft trip - shelt...
    ----------------------------
    Date: 10-09-2019 to 11-09-2019
    Day: 10°C (50°F)
    Night: 8°C (46,4°F)
Location: Sapmi - the land of the Sami people in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Clean and remote classic northern wilderness. Fresh water rivers. Pine, spruce and birch forrest. Mountains, bears, wolves, eagles, reindeers etc. No wildlife is giving campers problems. I can't give you any information about my location, only that I am somewhere in Sapmi. You need to be the owner or get the owners permission if you want to do the same.
Consuming: Water (meltwater) and spruce tea (hot and cold). Meat (pig) with salt or spruce/pine campfire smoke as spices.
    _________________
    A few questions:
    1. Why do the meat have that color/surface?
It is just raw meat that I did hang outside in the wind one day before the trip - the wind dries the surface and gives it that color.
    2. Is the water safe to drink?
Yes. Almost all water in Sapmi can you drink straight from the source. All can do it and a lot do.
    3. Why the roof extension?
    Extra protection against rain/snow.
    4. Is the shelter waterproof?
No. You need to add birch bark or other waterproof material before it becomes truly waterproof. Moss is not water proof - but a lot of moss and poles close together and a steep angle on the roof, will provide some shelter from rain.
    5. What did damage the birch tree next to the boat?
Beavers. A lot of beaver activity in the area.
    6. What is the white plants on the ground?
Moss. I know it as "Reindeer moss".

I am most envious that Bertram has figured out how to make a living by simply living and documenting it. We see his incredible traditional/primitive woodsman, smith, and fisherman skills in each of his peaceful, calm videos. Each one contains multiple angles, different camera placements and techniques, good use of all available lighting, and considerable thought given to framing each shot to best illustrate what he is doing, and wordlessly tell the story. Then there is the editing and audio so that it all sounds right, and flows smoothly. I think he is in the enviable position that he has the skills of both worlds, and could successfully move between them as he chooses, or live entirely in one if circumstances or choice so moves him. I think I would have his permanent grin too if I were in his shoes! Congratulations on the well deserved growth of the Chanel!

Building a shelter is very important if you want to survive in the wilderness - there is a movie and a book about someone form the United States he died in an abandoned trailer because he could not find food - if he would have met someone like you he could have survived, when I remember correctly he met a trapper or a hunter or a similar person that knows how dangerous it is there - this person warned him.
Here in the video: the small boat also a cool thing to have and use - such boats you could use on every small lake or river. Cool haircut and beard looks natural the woman surely love it. A Backpack with room for the most important things you do not need very fast. Small wood put under the boat maybe so it gets not to wet if it rains much or something like that to protect it. Bertram searches for fitting trees. reindeer skin with enough room for the things from the backpack cool. All very cool things that fit in this relatively small backpack with meat - he might have hunger. The clothing might be self-made,
I remember a video about this.
I Do not know it yet I guess Bertram starts with the floor. Metal with enough metal and the knowledge you could build blades yourself - wait I did this already very long ago the father of a friend of mine he had a private forge. Small knife most useful tool most of the time. Small blade a very small blade can for example be used to open shoelace safely and many other things like to cut dressing material. I have a nail scissor for this. Fire. A visible spark and now it burns. At the clothing the scabbard for the big knife - hm I have no time to watch more = I write this down it is better for my memory as well. Then I remember everything better. Usually pupils etc. do this as well before an exam.
Bertram might sell tools I do not know if this was this channel here - I look back later here. Looks almost like snow might be certain plants - this are likely the reindeer's favorite dishes. Cooking tea maybe next in the video later I might look how it continues. Added to the watch later playlist.

Oh Rune, you are a gift to the CZcams bushcraft community. To say I absolutely love your work would be a gigantic understatement. I have a few questions, and would very much appreciate if you could give me your opinion and experience:
1 - Is a roof covered with moss and ground vegetation like the one you did here waterproof, or will it leak in heavier rainfall?
2 - When you are roasting meat or fish are you not worried that the scent would attract some bigger predators, like a pack of wolves or a bear? Or are those animals not that common in the area you camp at all?
3 - This lean-to shelter doesn't seem that suitable for colder weather, and by the looks of it, the temperature goes quite low during the night where you're camping. Is there any specific advantage to that shelter over others? Because it seems that if it rains heavier, and there's wind, this shelter will do little to protect you.
4 - Having in mind you are a blacksmith, do you actually make custom tools for clients? I want to buy an axe for bushcraft, and I don't really want to spend US$200 for the legendary Gränsfors Bruks Forest Axe. It would be an absolute honor to have an axe done for me by you. If you do this kind of stuff, we can discuss the details by email for example.
I love the way you supported that top wooden beam of the shelter. No rope or nails or anything, and it's as secure as it gets. Very nifty! Once again - thank you with all my heart for doing what you do, and sharing it with all of us for free. Be well, brother. Odin watches over you with pleasure. ❤

      Thanks.
      1. Answer in the video description.
      2. No. Isn't a problem in my part of the world.
      3. One of the big benefits is having a view. But yes you get limited shelter compared to a closed one.
      4. No - I don't sell anything.

I am so very jealous of the talents it took to produce this series of videos! Here is a man who can blend technology with primitive craft and tell an unbelievable, yet timeless story without saying a word! Amazing!

Me and my friend feel such a great calm watching Bertrams clips, each time we bring up the conversation about him, we always laugh in pure joy and love of the silent smile that is upon his face when he is in peace and fulfillment of nature, the camp & fire bring to his senses! You are great!! 24:37

    Excelente video Bertrand.
    Muchas gracias.

I'm always amazed at how much effort you put into these angles and distant shots. It's one thing to do this on land but on a moving river is much more time consuming. Also love the deliberation and precision in almost every scene. I'm sure you screw up (that's why we have editing) but what we see is a masterpiece. Great job with another incredible video. This is easily one of the best bushcraft/adventure channels on CZcams. Also, loving the new landscape. Is that Norway?
