  • Have you ever had a specific space and shape in mind for a your model railroad industries on your layout, but couldn't find the perfect kit to fit the bill? Or maybe you were trying to model a specific structure, but no kit quite came close? Well, today, we're going to dive into the world of kitbashing and show you how I took a standard kit, combined it with pieces from my scrap box, and created a totally unique masterpiece to fit my space!
Imagine having a vision for your layout and being able to bring it to life by modifying a kit and transforming it into a jaw-dropping masterpiece that no one else has on their layout! That's the power of kitbashing. It's all about adapting and customizing to make something truly special.
Today, in part two of this video series on building a complex structure for Crown Cork & Seal, we'll explore how I identified a kit as a starting point and then kitbashed it to fit the specific space and shape I needed for my model railroad layout. (Well, it's a bit of a kitbash mixed with a scratch built model.) And the best part? You don't have to be an expert modeler to do it!

I feel that kit bashing is the only way to go on custom buildings. And I save all the bits and pieces from kits and scrap styrene. Great video, Joe.

It is a good way to go much of the time, but sometimes, you just can't get away without scratch building.

I haven't done any kitbashing or scratch building yet. But eventually I will. However, I just want to say, Thank you. Thank you for lighting a fire under my...feet to get motivated. I have been procrastinating about adding my second mainline. So, due to watching your videos, I finally got that started. Again, thank you, Joe...

My tip for glueing windows, especially window glass, and really anything already painted together, use Canopy Glue. The stuff is amazing, strong, and it dried crystal clear so it's not a disaster if you get it somewhere it should not be. You can even make windows for small openings with it. CA around any sort of transparent plastic too often turns into a disaster, no matter how careful you are.

I’ve never really used canopy glue, but I know people who swear by it. I’ll have to finally break down and get some to try it out. Thanks!

Great job, Joe. I've never been much of a kitbasher. Scratch builder, yes. But not mixing several kits or parts together.

You asked for those of us who have been guilty of being armchair model railroaders to tell if we finally got off the pot. I am finally. We moved into our new home a year ago this past April. I had a dream layout. I wanted to so not have it in the house and we were going to put it in a good sized out building in the back yard. Money has changed and I don't see that out building happening. Just recently I built the hobby work table for the crafts room upstairs and now I have a place to build and solder and learn how to make DCC happen in a DC engine. I have 4 or 5 Athearn blue boxes. I decided that I have just got to see my little fleet of good running condition locos move about. So, I am going to make a small 8' to 9' by 20" wide very basic switching layout. I bought the timber for the basic frame just today. I will do the sanding of the 1" x 3's" tomorrow. I am hoping to find some Homasote for the base that fit into the cradle I am constructing. I have always been a DC modeler, but I recently bought a NCE power cab and I am ready to plug away at this new territory because it makes huge sense and is so much more able to do extra flexible activities that DC could never do. That our little town of < 40,000 finally got a hobby shop and it is trains only and is run by a former railroad engineer who will answer any question that his experience allows. Well, it's a start, right ?

Very good video, Joe. Your building looks great. Kinda like putting together a jigsaw puzzle only you can make the pieces whatever size and shape you need. I also need to go back and get the ratios of your washes.

On my N scale layout, I used an Atlas mill kit with a Walthers George Roberts printing kit to create a large industry. My idea was to create something with super tight curves and tracks running close to the walls to get that cramped feel to the scene. When you look at both kits, they are wildly different in terms of achitecture so you need to tell a story to sell the build. The atlas kit is really cool because it comes with lots of windows of different types. I cut up the building in half and used the backside as one building flat along the backdrop and a spur in front of it. I used the front half next to it also with a spur running in front of it but with a slight curve, so it
