Pure Cinema Podcast interviewed Nick Redman years ago before he died. Basically, Nick used to work in the soundtrack department at 20th Century Fox. The trends in physical media at the time was that most studios were only selling about 3000 copies of catalogue titles. Essentially, he and his partners thought the era of physical media was ending, hence the Twilight Time name. They made a business decision to limit every release to 3000. They never expected to sell out horror titles as quickly as they did, which is why some got second runs. Nick had great connections with Fox, which is why they released so many Fox films. The saddest thing about this is that in some cases the only legitimate way to watch some of those films is these old oop blu rays. Only 3000 copies worldwide. No streaming, no other physical releases. Disney could care less.

There is a great interview with Nick Redman on Killer POV which later became Shockwaves. He laid out the reason why they licensed 3000 copies. They would pay the studio up front and that was the best model to license from the studios. Sony didn’t allow them to produce their own special features.

Special Features and supplemental material in general was something Criterion popularized on their laserdiscs back in the 90s but really only among laserdisc users. The general public wasn't aware of that sort of thing because the vast majority of people were into VHS, which didn't carry any supplemental features. The general public was not really exposed to it until DVDs came out.

Twilight Time was curated by one of the founders and they would buy licenses for a limited run. One of the founders died and they ceased to exist as they once did. A lot of their titles went for a lot of money, but they would have sales a couple of times a year to clear inventory. Almost all were limited to 3k but there were a few exceptions. They renewed the license for Fright Night and they printed another 3k and when they did that it was a big controversy because the people that got their hands on the first run were mad because it caused the first run to drop in value. Was fun while it lasted.

A classy evening with the Rad Master and Planatoid Hannah. 😅 Great little retrospective. P.S: I've said it before in both your channels and I'll say it again: there's a kickass spanish steelbook with both "Fright Night" on Blu-ray, the first being a 4K scan and the second close in quality thats really worth it. Was my favorite buy from 2022.

Twilight Time had some great titles. Talk Radio, The Last Detail, Kiss of Death, I Could Go On Singing, Blue Lagoon, Birth of a Nation, etc. I miss that company. They had close out sales once the owner died. I believe most were $10 each at the time. Screen Archives bought the name and whatever was left. They put out a few titles since then, but I don't think it really caught on. I miss Twilight Time.

Twilight Time was owned and operated by Nick Redman and Brian Jamieson. Both have worked in the film and/or music industry and started the label as a hobby. Screen Archives is/was a 3rd party retailer for Twilight Time. Their main retail focus is selling CDs of film scores. Screen Archives was also known as the main retail outlet for Code Red and Scorpion Releasing before RoninFlix. (besides Code Reds notorious Big Cartel store, which was rarely open.)
I dont know all the fine tune details about operations of Twilight Time, but they had limited editon runs of 3000 across the board besides a couple releases. Most of the titles they would release would be comparable to a mix of what Criterion or Kino would release.

  • @SidneyJenkins1973
    @SidneyJenkins1973 Před 7 měsíci +2

Twilight Time was one of my favorite companies. They started selling on Screen Archives only, but then also sold on their site. The last proper release was in 2019, but then they started shutting down in early 2020. Screen Archives has brought out a few since then. Those were the non-limited ones you were looking at. I was trying to figure out why Garrett sold The Vanishing because that remake has no other American release.

I have around 100 Twilight Time BDs in my collection. First discovered them after I started importing boutique label releases like Criterion or Scream Factory around 2015. As mentioned in your video Twilight Time was only sold online on those two sides. After the founder died in 2020 Twilight Time shut down with a big last sale. Afterwards screen Archive bought the name rights and the remaining Twilight Time stock. That’s mostly what you can still buy from them. They also released a couple of new releases after 2020 through Screen Archive under the Twilight Time name, but for the most part Twilight Time is history now. I really liked their approach of focusing on the movie itself, carefully chosen artwork and always including a short, but very insightful booklet essay. Their printing run was mostly 3.000 units. Greetings from Germany! Chris
PS: Enemy Mine is a great movie, but also a Fox title. Eureka had a Steelbook in the UK. I have both of those releases in my collection.

The reason they'd be limited to 3k is they were a small company and it probably kept their licensing fee down for all these big titles, their contracts promised they'd only do 3k runs so that got them a discount.

I own a Twilight Time sealed copy of “The Other” (1972). Never seen the film, but it’s apparently sold for as much as $180, so off to eBay it goes. 😂 If anyone wants to trade for some other limited editions, though, feel free to let me know.

The first time I heard of Twilight Time was when they were going to release Christine on blu. I don't remember how I heard of them. Back in the early 2010s, I really wasn't on facebook. I know every once in a while I will google movies to see if there's a blu-ray release coming out. That's probably how. That and there may have been a bulletin board back then that I frequented.
In any case, I do own one Twilight Time title. Picked it up sometime circa 2018-2019. This was off of Twilight's site not Scrern Archive. Not horror, though. Got Rapid Fire with Brandon Lee. That was released by TT in 2018.
But yeah, I think TT's model was similar to Code Red's. I think everything or most everything was limited to 3000 copies. I know Rapid Fire was limited.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Twilight Time used a transfer that has a dark blue filter on a majority of the film, even the daytime shots. It obscures detail to hell. Not sure if Savini actually approved the transfer or not but it is way too dark IMHO. I prefer the Sony disc.

@@adamsteinbacher2629 Interesting. I guess being that I only saw the movie once on VHS, I never noticed the filter. Has Sony put it out on 4K? Being I paid $100 for the TT disc, I really can't justify getting rid of it unless it's on a 4K disc.

Twilight Time is hands down the worst company ever, especially when they would hold a license but refuse to reprint the title just because they "didn't want to piss off their customers." Like screw that, you don't deserve to hold a license if you aren't going to let people buy it. I missed out on many movies from them and after a while, I just stopped caring. Thankfully, real companies like Shout! Factory and Kino started to get some of those titles away from them.
I've got their Night of the Living Dead remake along with a few Film Noirs.
