  • I partnered with VSDC to bring you this first tutorial in a series of how to edit videos with VSDC, a free video editor for PC users!
    You're currently watching #1 of 3.

If there is one question I hear all the time, it's "what free video editing software can I use to edit my videos?" There are a handful of free video editor options out there for Mac and PC users, but one of them was recently retired by GoPro, and in its place, GoPro recommends PC users use VSDC. VSDC is a free video editing software and it's full-featured... meaning there is no trial period, no watermarks, and no usage limits on the free version.
In fact, VSDC came to me and asked if there was any way we could partner together to get the word out about their free video editor, knowing that video editing is a hot topic (especially among my audience of video and GoPro enthusiasts). So in this first installment in this three-part series, let's dive into getting started with editing your GoPro videos, mobile phone videos, or any kind of video, with VSDC.

Great tutorial video! Far more explanatory than most other videos I've found on the subject. I'm just barely needing to use video editing software for the first time and I hope your video series can help me at least slightly master the basics of VSDC so I can hopefully create minimally adequate video clips. Thank you for posting this information in such a clear and understandable video!

Thanks so very much Meredith. You bailed me out. I can't say it better.
Previously I had been using Windows Live Movie Maker but when I had issues with my P.C I was forced to upgrade from windows 2007 to windows 2010 which no longer has Windows Live Movie Maker. I stumbled upon VSDC Free Video Editor online but it was a nightmare for me to navigate it until I had a breakthrough from watching this video. I will watch your other videos in this series.
Once again I say thank you so much.
    Big thumbz-up.

This is exactly what I"ve been looking for in VSDC tutorials. Most are just background music where you try to follow the cursor to see where they clicked, and can only guess as to why. Your work here is SOO much more informative and a better use of my time.

Hi, I had problems with exporting 4K video from this tool. I've used standard layer ordering from my past experience instead of using the wizard, and then I exported the video (first layer to last layer , from left to right, which you said is opposite than other tools). My exported video was longer than I expect, and the video is freezing at certain points. Could the layer ordering be the reason for this unsuccessful export? Do you know? Just saw your video here, and I'll try today again with wizard.

My wife and I literally have hundreds of hours of GoPro footage that we've never known what to do with. Every editor I've looked at is either incredibly expensive and/or has a huge learning curve. Or is crap.

I have a question, the first section where you upload your videos, the section that has transitions and where you can rearrange the videos, there is no sound. Since I use multiple clips I'm having difficulty rearranging the clips due to it not having any sound. Can you tell me how to turn on the sound in that section before I click "apply settings"? (Refer to the 6 minute mark on your video to see what I'm talking about). Thank you!

So I have a question, I'm trying to edit a video on vsdc free version. Well my video that I'm trying to edit has a ton of stuttering and skipping and cant even preview the video to edit because how skippy it is. I then changed preview settings to 144p to see if that would change it. There no difference from previewing it in 144p or 720p it has the exact same amount of skipping like a buffering affect every fraction of a second. How can I fix this? Windows 10, i5 processor, 8gb ram.

I'm really struggling wirh vsdc . for example I select play on my file and when I press stop so I can select to split it, the cursor goes back to the start also when I do manage to split it by dragging the cursor to the split spot I couldn't seem to select the unwanted bit to delete it, the whole file deleted , I had to drag it to the left until it disappeared. When splitting in Camtasia Studio a file when split is really easy to see and select and is obvious, so I must be doing something wrong .All my goro footage is usually from one file and I just select clips from it and then edit it in the next screen so easy in GoPro studio, that's another thing there doesn't seem to be the tool for marking in and marking out the wanted clip. I want to get this working before I think of the pro version.

Question tho - I have been trying to use VSDC and while watching playback preview, its really jumpy and hard to watch so im going to find editing quite hard while it is like this.. is there anything im doing wrong ?
I have uploaded my vids straight from gopro and also saved them to file and both ways they are still jumpy on preview. I have also tried converting using Handbrake first and then opening these files into VSDC but still really jumpy ?!

Hi thanks for sharing. Could you please share how to trim a very long video and divide that long video into several videos. Thanks

Does this program allow you to edit the sound? Such as getting rid of background noise?

Hi Meredith thanks for making these very informative tutorials. I have tried adding my clips to the software at the same time and they don't open in layers like yours did from the sprite. Can you please show again if there are multiple clips how they can be added to the software at the same time. I need to do them wash separately and that's awful lot of time .
