    Good video. Subscribed. I have a 2006 GT and I was installing a rear sway bar over the weekend and I saw that there was some light blackish residue at the bottom of the diff cover almost looking like a grease stain. I’m the original owner and it’s just shy of 100K miles. Should this cover be completely dry? I never noticed any oil on the garage floor. It’s been stored all winter. How do you check the oil level? Just put your finger in the fill hole? I never jacked by the rear diff before so I’m not sure why it would be leaking if it is.

    • @mcgurrentertainment
      @mcgurrentertainment  Před rokem +1

      Original owner, very nice. Typically, the differential cover is dry, however sometimes grease and fuilds from the road can splatter under the vehicle (reasonably). Yes, you can easily check the level via fill plug. If you remove the bolt and the fluid is close to the fill hole, you're good. Leak can be caused by a defect in the gasket (it happens). Are you noticing any issues (noise or vibration) while driving?

It looks like something that’s been there a while. I have found this car to always have some rear end noise but it’s hard to tell if it’s the rear end or the tires. I’ve read some other comments from people saying the same about rear end noise.

    Excellent tutorial. Couple of questions: 1) Is it exactly the same procedure for 3.7? 2) How often should you change the fluid, 3) Is it OK to replace valve later (or only can do it with empty diff).

    • @mcgurrentertainment
      @mcgurrentertainment  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you. Those are good questions, I'll try my best to answer them.
      1) Its very possible. Starting in 2011, both the V6 (3.7L) & V8 (5.0L Coyote) Mustangs used the Ford 8.8 rear ends.
      2) Per the Ford Manual, "do not check or change fluid unless a leak is suspected, service is required or the assembly has been submerged in water." Ford-design axles are lubricated for life.
      3) Yes. The valve can be replaced anytime. Since this was the cause of the leak, it needed to be replaced.
      Hope this information helps.

      @@mcgurrentertainmentThank you very much! So if it looks OK all dry etc. maybe I shouldn't touch it? I did have the fluid changed 30-40k miles ago so it's not factory. • @mcgurrentertainment
      @mcgurrentertainment  Před 2 lety

      40k miles ago is not bad. If you're not having issues, it should be OK. The service manual states, "Service refill capacities are determined by filling the axle to the bottom of the fill hole with the axle at ride height." It also calls for 5-5.25 pts (2.5-2.625 qts).

      Before changing the differential fluid, we did contact AMSOIL, and they did inform us their fluid contained Friction Modifier. However, their lubricant is formulated for typical limited-slip differentials, and the Mustang falls under the atypical category. So, leaning on the side of caution (and following procedure), we decide to add the Friction Modifier. At a minimum, we can at least minimize gear-housing chatter. Verify through the manufacturer. But according to Fel Pro, "Using a Fel-Pro gasket means you don’t have to keep multiple tubes of different RTVs on hand." So you may not need RTV.
