The Problem With The MagSafe Charger

  • David and David tell you about the problem with MagSafe. It's a good idea, but was poorly executed.
    The power adapter for the MagSafe charger doesn't come in the box, which means you might need to spend another $10-20 to even use it.
    In our view, the MagSafe magnet is too strong, effectively making it not a wireless charger. It needs a heavier base so the MagSafe charger doesn't stay connected to your iPhone when you pick it up.
    If you buy an adapter to extend the length of the cable and make it work with USB chargers you already own, you'll quickly realize the MagSafe charger doesn't work. It simply doesn't deliver enough power for that setup.

    I know this video is two years old, but I just got a MagSafe charger for my phone, and you summed up my thoughts exactly!
    I think the only real benefit to MagSafe is that you don’t put wear and tear on the lightning port from regular plugging and unplugging. That’s about it.

  • @btozziey
    @btozziey Před 3 lety +6

    Wow! I normally love your videos, but you really don’t get right on this one. I absolutely love the MagSafe feature of my iPhone! It IS wireless every bit as much as any other wireless charger is. Also, I bought a MagSafe charger on Amazon for $19.99 and I have three of them; two of them are in my cars and one on my nightstand. It is super cool in my cars because I just plop my phone near the charger and it snaps into place, and when I’m ready to leave I just grab my phone and go; so cool. I drove me nuts that 60% of the time I’d go to bed with my phone charging on my wireless charger only to find during the middles of the night (without me moving the phone) my phone wasn’t charging anymore. Ugh. Problem solved now.

      Finally someone who understands....
      This is a magnetic wireless charger. Putting the apple tax aside, this product functions perfectly because now they can have 3rd party companies make accessories that work with the charger that fit individual needs of the end user. Imagine going into apple and having to figure out which version of wireless charger you need cause they have 6 different ones. That makes no business sense, so let the Spigens, belkins, and whoever else makes these items make them and have them work with the charger.
      Prime example is Apple Watch, I hated that I couldn’t see it cause it had to face up while on my desk. Insert Belkin and Spigen here... made a stand that the charger fit into and is how I like it. My wife doesn’t like it but she likes the other model she bought from Amazon that holds it a different way.
      Literally listened to 5 mins of “this is not wireless charging cause there’s a wire attached, and a charger wasn’t included in the box”. Are you kidding me, I bought a desktop stand charger made by anker for $50 and it didn’t include the charging adapter either, and come to think of it not many do.

    This mag safe is a ‘solution’ that doesn’t actually have a problem. It has been scientifically determined that the increased utility of this MagSafe, and in fact the chi charger in general is less that one tenth of one percent in the ‘charger’ category, which excludes all the other ten usability and functionality categories, which include things like does the phone actually do the things you want it to do. I just made that all up, it’s how I feel about it. On the other hand MagSafe on my laptop, which Apple has eliminated, actually performed a significant function, mostly for me quick and accurate connecting up. Like getting all things smaller, this is a program of diminishing returns, where the next ‘improvement’ is of such arguable and minor effect that it amounts to really nothing at all, whereas something like an incremental increase in processor power actually has a measurable effect. Good work guys, call it how you see it. I use a case on my phone so Chi doesn’t work, however I have invested heavily throughout my life in using my fingers and hands, and it turns out I can still plug the phone in , burning off five seconds. Pick the lint out of the charger port (toothpick) twice a year and you’re good to go. In ten years, five seconds a day ads up! To 34 minutes.

    The MagSafe charger is amazing! I don’t know why it gets so much hate. Maybe because I have the 12 mini and because of how light it is, The magnetic connection is much stronger. This is something I wanted so much. THIS IS WIRELESS. Finally I can use my phone while charging it. Although the mini can only use 12 watts out of the 15 the MagSafe is capable of providing for the 12/12pro, and pro max. It is still faster then the 7.5 watts that most Qi wireless chargers offer. My only complaint is that I wish they would make the cable longer. Other then that great job Apple!

  • @rbm0307
    @rbm0307 Před 3 lety +2

    The charger is wireless because the interface between the puck and the phone is inductively coupled. That's the wireless aspect. Agreed that the short cable is a problem, as is the inability of the USB-A charger to signal to the USB-C cable that the charger has enough capacity to activate the charging interface. The Magsafe principle still holds; it would be less catastrophic to the phone's USB-C jack should you trip over this cable and yank the puck away from the phone. The alternative scenario is much worse. If you trip over a plugged in cable, the force of the jolt would not necessarily be inline with the plug and the jack on the phone will probably be damaged. The issue you're bringing up is that the light weight of the phone means that it is more likely the phone will be jerked off the table in case of a trip rather than the puck/phone part ways. I can see that happening.

The Qi charger didn’t charge my 12 Mini if it was disturbed by >1/4” and I found myself waking up to a phone at 15%. So I purchased off brand from Amazon for $16. And I love it. Heh - “not wireless charging”. Curious, exactly how do you expect electricity to be transported sans wire from the power company to your phone? Are not all other inductive chargers also tethered to a wallwart via wire?
    Perhaps your point is the MagSafe magnet is too strong for how you intend to use it, rather than it’s not wireless charging. And, perhaps a better term would be “connector-less charging” rather than wireless charging.
    Yes it’s expensive, but when used as designed and intended I’ve found MagSafe works exceptionally well. I agree, a heavy base, which I have; does make MagSafe a more elegant charging solution.

    I do not think Apple did not really think about this product well. I think it has something to do with what's going in Europe right now. Where there's a plan to require manufacturers to use only one type of charger, which is most likely leaning towards USB type C. And we all know Apple does not want that. So, they are actually thinking far ahead before this law comes into effect. And most likely, they are planning to eventually remove the charging port and replace it with... Magsafe Chargers. Just my 2 cents.

So the mag charging is a good idea and for all of my other devices I have gone to the cables with the magnetic 🧲 round connecters most devices use the mini usb which are terrible but the 2 pin magnet connecter is great there is a circle ⭕️ with a pin in the middle and the cable sticks to it whenever it gets close charges great 👍 pulls off easy and when all of your devices have them installed you can use the same cable to charge everything phone tablets portable speakers or headphones. It has made life a whole bunch better.

    Wouldn't a strong magnet somehow affect internal components/data?

    The only thing that makes MagSafe worth while is 3D printed charging stations that house the MagSafe charger. Either then that I completely agree with your review.

    Does magsafe fast charging damage batt faster like normal fast charging compare to normal qi wireless charging?

    You could get a 10 foot mag safe charger which would fix the issue with the other cable not delivering enough power.

    I've bought a Amazon stand for it, £15.
    I guess the benefit of MagSafe is to be able to hold the phone like a mount. For users that just want to sit it down and pick it up, as you say, just get a regular Qi charger.

    Actually I don't quite agree with your statement re. "no difference between unplugging the cable from the bottom of the phone . . ." I have an iPhone 7 and REALLY looking forward to getting the 12 - ONE of the many reasons is that I won't have the frustrating experience of trying to find the slot for the charging cable in less than daylight light conditions and on occasion, not having plugged it in all the way and waking up to a half charged phone. The Mag Safe centres the phone on the charger - it works just fine (I tried it in an Apple Store) and I really don't think it's a stretch for an able bodied person to have to use two hands to remove the phone from the charger - I do have to agree that it WOULD be nice to have the charger stay put as you lift the phone though.

    funny you mentioned glue/brick. I did just that, or something similar. I went to a granite counter top store, got a free sample piece of granite countertop, and made a base for my night stand. After, I superglued apples MagSafe to the FREE sample piece of granite, it works flawlessly. I love it.

      also bought and placed dollar tree felt feet under granite so it did not scratch my night stand.

    Why do people charge their expensive phones like a lemon? At this point people want their magnet phones to double as a grappling hook. Jfc LOL

    I’ve never got enough power outlets to cope with all the ‘wireless’ items, every wall power outlet has to have an extension cable and I have spaghetti wires hidden behind chairs & units it’s a nightmare

    I purchased the new mag charger & love it! Not worried it’s not wireless. It’s super fast charging & will be purchasing the stand for it which is $39.00 plus taxes @ the Apple store, which will sit up instead of lying down flat.
