Columbus, Georgia | Driving Through Worst Parts

- Why would anyone want to live here? Columbus, Georgia is looking pretty rough in these areas. High in violent crime, not so great schools, and with over a 22% poverty level, you may want to rethink that move. Although the cost of living is lower than much of the surrounding areas, amenities are few and long commutes are common. Population is around 202,957 as of 2023, down just a little bit from recent years. There's always some nice areas but today we're looking at the worst and most impacted areas. Let's take a drive and check them out!
Didn't know Columbus George was a big town till I got into kayaking.i went with some friends there.what amazing fun I had . The waves on the river is like being on a roller-coaster. Anyone who likes kayaking must definitely go there. It was the best fun I had kayaking yet..
This area had gotten hammered by tornadoes since the 50s; probably contributed to some of the decline
Quite a few shotgun houses. I bet that hotel was nice in it's day now,.....! Enjoyed the ride! 👍
Most of the homes look like company housing similar to the coal mining towns of Appalachia.

Quite a few of those boarded up shotgun houses look livable, but the For Rent sign says a lot, too. Wonder who actually owns all this? The state?
I don't think they are shotgun houses, they're not narrow enough.
I live in Columbus GA. Its a hell hole for sure.
There must have been something going on at one time to warrant all these houses. What business failed and left the area impoverished?
Columbus is right next to Fort Benning.
Columbus, GA was also a big mill town. So alot was worker homes
It used to be a big mill town with lots of manafacturing

With some reference points thrown in maybe I could recall this area from my memory as a youth. We moved there in '54, I was about two and moved away in '64, I was ten. We were on Morris rd and I went to Edgewood elm.
Would this be close to the Buena Vista side or the Macon rd side of Columbus ? Curious.
I had a relative stationed in Fort Benning (now Fort Moore) near Columbus back in the 60s. I wonder if any of that was Army housing at one time?

@5:22 Those apartments on Rigdon Rd used to be a hotel. It was the only hotel where African Americans could stay. So MLK and Civil Rights leaders used to stay there. Now, the area is rundown sadly.
