Joseph LeMercier Laroche, Jr. was born 17 December 1912, he married to a Mlle Claudine _?. He died 17 January 1987. Claudine LaRoche is still living in the Paris area. She and Joseph had several children who are the only living descendants of this family.

Mrs T BrumfieldGary If it’s not been documented, then where’s your proof? These shipping companies built and fitted these ships in Liverpool and Southampton and that’s why most of their employees were from there. If these black workers existed, where did they sleep? White Star logs list berthing assignments for all crew and they were carrying a full crew on the maiden voyage, with all the allotted berths for firemen and stokers taken. There were no additional bunks in crew quarters to house these mythical black crewmen. White Star certainly wasn’t going to let them stay in the empty third class cabins on the ship. How is it that literally no one aboard mentioned seeing black stokers? Several stokers and firemen survived, yet none said they saw black crew members-and they would’ve if they had, because the A La Carte restaurant employees had to be housed in their own section of the crew area because they got so much harassment for being Italian.
I would love to see the proof if you have it though. As someone who is both black and has researched the Titanic for years though, it’s just an urban legend.

Things like land willed to her by white people, but her life and the life of my grandmother was threatened so my grandmother signed off on the land. @@Bigbosstb I'm actually pretty calm--using caps in online posting is usually a signifier of someone who isn't though ;) And I know that our people have a strong oral history. Within my own family, we have stories of the exploits of our ancestors that were never written down, but have been passed down through the generations. And I think that's fantastic. However, this is one instance where there is zero evidence of either written or oral history. There's not even evidence of White Star's alleged claim for "lost property" that typically goes with these stories. So believe me, I know we have a rich oral history, but this Titanic myth ain't one of them.

n smitty this is a great story. however, if he was born in Haiti his nationality is Haitian. if he immigrated to the United States he would then be a Haitian-American. But it sounds like he had at least two nationalities. I don't know if he retained his Haitian nationality when he moved to France but at the very least he would have been a Parisian American or haitian-american. He is not an African-American because he was not born in Africa. Africa is a continent that has 54 distinct Nations. The same way with Black Americans (black people that are born in the United States) are Black by race and American by nationality. nationality meaning of course the place of one's birth and or legal residents. If they were born in any one of Africa's 54 Nations and moved to United States they would be known by the particular Nation they immigrated from. they would be designated as a Nigerian American, a Ghanaian American, a Somalian American or a Sudanese American etc. The term "African-American" is a made-up term used by racist white supremacists to disenfranchise American-born blacks from their full rights of citizenship in the land of their birth. If you take a moment and realize you will not see white Americans across the board referring to themselves as immigrants or "European - Americans" despite the fact that their ancestors got off a boat from England called the MAYFLOWER in 1620. Again, great story I just wanted to bring this piece in that I just shared with you for clarification for everyone that will see it. Thank you and thank you again many blessings!

It wouldve been wonderful if his story was also included in the movie. Many characters were portrayed in the movie even if it was only for a single scene. An Arab family frantically trying to find a way out, a Chinese passenger who was rescued from the water, some even say that Eva Hart, one of the survivors, was also portrayed as her 7 year old self saying goodbye to her father in a scene.
Being the only black passenger on the ship I feel like Joseph was a significant character and deserved some screen time. They could've easily included a little segment about him when the lifeboats were being lowered.

If I remember correctly, sometime around the hype anticipating the 1997 film's debut, Denise Monder of KPOO FM San Francisco mentioned on her weekly jazz program that director Jame Cameron had been notified before the close of production by someone with documentation from the 1950's regarding Laroche and his family being on board, but instead of taking the opportunity to reveal the facts, and add non Caucasian cast members, Cameron and the producers chose to ignore them.
Again, if I remember correctly; this omitted historical truth and subsequent missed equal employment opportunity, and some others in part led to an industry wide boycott including the Oscars and television that year and the next.
I believe one of the letters to Cameron is posted online now.
