      Have the oldest of its kind Cathedral in Ripon what makes it a city third smallest in the country, goes back to literally around the 650s, well with the original Saxon crypt as well (Alfred the Great and all that Monarch of the West Saxons before even England was established and unified as a country of course and where Masham certainly would have been if it didnt exist back then would have been like Ripon in the Anglian Kingdom of Northumbria (going up to part of Scotland even or what became Scotland.

    Masham may have been the best small town that you visited but I would suggest that there are other even better natural beauty spots in our small island in Devon, Cornwall, The Peak District, The Lake District and especially The Cotswolds. British people reading this will probably disagree or favour their own town but for tourists these four areas will fulfill your expectations. My personal favourites are Bibury, Lower Slaughter and Bourton On The Water in the Cotswolds and as most visitors fly into London, The Cotswolds are much closer than the other areas.

We English have a special affinity towards Americans due to the debt of gratitude we have for the sacrifice of their forebearers made in helping to preserve our freedom.

    You know, living in the county, as I do, you could be forgiven for thinking there was nothing wrong with the world, if you didn't travel to certain other areas, that are not really so far away, and/or watch the news!
    It's taken 'they' say, over a ridiculous three hundred million years to get to where we are, and there are those who are hell bent on destroying everything, before this century is out!

    Wow! Thanks for taking us along on your visit to Yorkshire. I've wanted to see it ever since reading the series of James Herriot books. And yes I know his name wasn't really James Herriot and some of the stories were embellished a bit. It was his description of the beautiful countryside, small towns and people that intrigued me. It is as lovely as he said it was. Thanks for sharing this beautiful part of England with us.

      James Herriott's "Darrowby" is real life Thirsk, located about 12 miles due east of Masham. And although I believe his vet son is since retired, the surgery that James (real name Alfred White) and Siegfried (Donald Sinclair) ran is in Thirsk and open as a museum. BTW, I know several people who had him as their vet, and VERY few of the stories were embellished.

    It's interesting how you can tell they are finding a lot of things interesting or surprising that we just find normal in the UK -like the bread, cakes, flowers, gardens, buildings, and other things that the camera is lingering on - and I don't know what...we are supposed to be looking at! Shows how you take the things you see every day for granted. It's interesting to see the UK through the perspective of visitors.

  • @leod-sigefast
    @leod-sigefast Před 5 lety +1

    I think the fact It is Mas-ham is that ham is a common English place name suffix (related to Home) but meaning farmstead in Old English. By juxtapose it found its attached to a Mas- name; the s and the h never were nor should be considered together. It happens in other English place names with the -ham suffix. Also to note that the sh spelling for the 'shhh' sound was introduced by Norman-French scribes to English. In Old English it was always 'sc' for the 'shhh' sound. So this problem wouldn't arise if we still used the original English spelling!

    Lovely 😊 our stomping area. Although you can’t live on a Dime in Masham. If you bought your allergy tablets from Home Bargains same thing and amount for 69pence. You should have bought the Fish and Chips from the White Horse in Thirsk or Northallerton. If you buy your Brymore Ice Cream from the Co op at the bottom of the bank and left it’s cheaper. You could have used our two berth Caravan and awning at Gretna Scotland from there you just nip up and catch the Car Ferry to Ireland 🇮🇪. Have fun and be blessed. You could have had High Tea ☕️ and a meal 🥘 a lot cheaper at Walworth Castle , Swindon Castle is expensive. Was that Fountains Abbey Grounds you were at? You all look to be having fun !

    One thing comes over really clearly in your videos and that is - what a good family you are. You are super polite and respectful and obviously enjoy discovering the world. Jack is growing up a well-rounded fine young gentleman. It was great to see your vlogs about visiting the UK and, particularly my part of England, Yorkshire. By the way, just in case someone hasn't mentioned it - Masham is pronounced mas-ham (not Mash-am) because it is made up of two words mas and ham. Ham is the Saxon word for a village; so "Mas" "Ham" is the village of Mas. US/GB.

    Just to clarify, it's a popular misconception that a cathedral bestows city status. In fact, there's no legal or official definition of what makes a city in the UK. Towns can and do apply to become cities just for reasons of tourism or to attract business, but there are no real criteria, it's just an honorary title.

    Unlucky with the weather in Yorkshire and London, it looks so grey. Apart from the last two days in Lancashire, it's been hot and sunny with barely a cloud in the sky for the last three or four weeks, only rained a few times during the night. At the beginning of summer it was the opposite way around though, south east dry and sunny, north west grey and cold.

      Actually we had sun for 90% of the time we were there. It was great.

      @@LivingOnADime That's good. The sun has disappeared around here now. Yesterday was cloudy and temperature wise supposedly cooler but it was so humid I sweated more walking ten minutes to the shop than I did the previous week walking over 20 miles to the next town and back. I think there's storms a brewin but hopefully back to hot and dry by next week.

      The weather is the main problem. When the sun shines it is heaven, but you can never guaranteed what the weather is going to do.

    Aren't Northerners friendly, warm and good-humoured? Your afternoon tea looked great but it's butter, jam first with the cream on top! Although that's a source of contention. Others will disagree.

    • @andrewuk2683
      @andrewuk2683 Před 5 lety +2

      @Matty Jones Indeed. People are people wherever you find them in the world. I just find northerners to be generally as I described them. Oh and before you say, people in the north who voted Brexit....this doesn't automatically make them racist! Lol
