  • If you enjoy this relaxing walk, please leave a comment..always interested in what you think of these walks and tours! Historically, Dent was part of the Ewecross wapentake in the West Riding of Yorkshire. From 1894 to 1974 it was part of Sedbergh Rural District. In 1974 it became part of the new county of Cumbria. The origin of the name is debated. Older forms include Denet (1200). It may have been taken from the hill now known as Dent Crag (2,250 ft), to be compared with another hill named Dent near Cleator in Cumberland, in which case it would derive from a pre-English Celtic term related to Old Irish dinn, dind "a hill". Alternative derivations see the name preserving the memory of the dark age kingdom known in Latin as Regione Dunutinga, founded and named after King Dunot the Great of the North Pennines. Both place name and dialect evidence indicate that this area was settled by the Norse in the 10th century. Geoffrey Hodgson, in 2008, argued that this invasion accounts for the high frequency of the Hodgson surname in the area. Dent was the birthplace of Thomas de Dent, Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, in the early 14th century. Dent was the birthplace of the geologist Adam Sedgwick in 1785. Dentdale was one of the last Yorkshire Dales to be enclosed, Dent's Enclosure Award being made in 1859.

Did you visit Dent railway station while you were in the area? It is the highest mainline railway station in England.

The streets are narrow, the houses are old, historical monuments of medieval England are everywhere! Clean and comfortable everywhere. There is no one on the streets, probably everyone is still sleeping? You probably walk through the empty streets early in the morning, I think? Stone walls and fences are everywhere, everything is like in a fairy-tale kingdom, cozy and beautiful!👍👍👍👍😊😊😊😊😊💂👑💂👑💂👑💂👑

Yes, I do try to get out early, whilst filming villages, to avoid busy times with cars and people, but never goes to plan..very tricky to film! This village is very busy at weekends or holiday time.. The Yorkshire Dale's are full of old villages and castles 🥾

@@relaxingwalks_uk I understand you well. It’s uncomfortable to feel during the shooting of the film when people around are interested, ask curious questions, or just ordinary onlookers!👍🤗😉😏☝️

9:46 Pretty sure I stayed in that house on the left in the late 1990s...was a lovely B&B. Close by was a blacksmith's forge run by a guy who'd been a photographer in London. He'd only recently bought it and told me there was iron bits and pieces up in the loft that had lain there hundreds of years. I think his missus ran the wool shop at 4:32

Interesting.. it really has kept its heritage, and they have done a great job in preserving the village..I wonder what he did with the iron bits..there is a small museum in the village.. thanks for your comment 🥾

cobbled streets.....and they're not that old. Most were laid to give horses more grip as they pulled heavy carts......
