Afternoon Tea at Claridge's - Best Afternoon Tea London

  • After the Sketch, afternoon tea at Claridge’s was once again a more traditional experience. I quite liked the afternoon tea at the Ritz, and because reviews on the internet say that Claridge’s afternoon tea might be even better, I was really looking forward to this afternoon tea.

I loved the whole experience. The interior is beautiful. The location of the hotel is excellent. The staff is extremely friendly. Live music is great, and the food! Food is extraordinarily delicious.
I really liked desserts in the afternoon tea at the Ritz. But I think it's fair to say that desserts at Claridge's were even better.
[EDIT: February 2020] - The prices are advertised as 'from £70' + 12.5% service charge from this year.
The price - The advertised price for the regular afternoon tea experience (no champagne etc.) is £60, but they charge 12.5% service charge on top of it, which makes it quite a hefty £67.5. However, I believe it's worth it.
How to book afternoon tea at Claridge's?
Book here: www.claridges.co.uk/restauran... and do it well in advance. I had to wait almost three months to get the weekend reservation.

one of my most wonderful experiences on my first trip to london in 1968 was afternoon tea at claridges. i had the good sense to dress up, which is why i was seated at once. the room was much simpler, lots of slightly curved love seats, and a tea table in front. the tea was quite good; i was amazed, when they put down a large plate of tea sandwiches. i thought perhaps i was to choose from them. but , no, they were all mine! wonderful pastries. this was b4 the scone and clotted cream craze, which was fine. i had tea in penzance with marvelous scones, clotted cream (looked like it was going to go str8 to my heart and clog it up. lol) and strawberry jam. loved the vid. i think they have gone overboard with the decor, but no one asked me. wink btw, in my 4 trips to england, i never had a bad meal. english food gets a bad rap. for one thing, there are gobs of different cuisines from the commonwealth countries.

Went there for my big birthday a few years ago it was expensive but lovely. The service was impeccable and I got to take away my left overs too. I wonder how long it will be before the world becomes normal and one can travel again and go to restaurants and cafés. Would love to to go to England again.

Enters a five star establishment with high-expectations. I hope so. I can't think of anybody that enters the Ritz , for example, with low expectations wondering if it's not going to measure up.
Looks like this place made the cut. Very polite staff in clean pressed white coats. Marmalade was delicious, extra cakes were served. Tea was fabulous. Accommodations opulent and splendiferous.

I've had afternoon tea at Claridges. Worth every penny, but be sure to plan and make your reservations prior to your trip. Also, if you're going to do other activities that day be sure to allow enough time. I speak from experience. For a number of reasons, we almost were late for our reservation and would have lost it as there usually are people waiting to see if there are any no-shows.

Very nice video which reminds me of my own experience there. In April 2015, I flew to London to spend one week with my sister and her 13 years-old son who lived in Paris. It was my nephew's first visit to UK. The day we walked to the Claridge's for the afternoon tea, my nephew was in a very bad mood after visiting the National History Museum. We arrived at the Claridge's and he still was grumpy. But just after the waiter served the tea, the pastries, scones, the sandwiches, etc., I noticed he started to change as he grapped a pastry... and then he ordered a fresh squeezed orange juice.. twice ! He loved everything and felt much better after his ate and drunk like a prince ! Spoiled rotten kid !

1:50 Just a note - It's considered inappropriate to use the utensil and put the clotted cream or preserves directly onto your scone. The proper thing is to put the cream and the lemon curd/preserve onto your plate, then use your knife to put it onto your scone. Also, you don't cut your scone (like you would a bagel), you use your hands and either break the scone into halves or just break off a bite-size piece, then put the clotted cream and preserves on the individual bite and then eat it.

I am not advocating that people behave boorishly and stuff their faces or don't follow polite etiquette. Good manners, politeness graciousness are wonderful. Just forgive and smile the tedious nuances that really don't matter.

If I remember correctly they put in some extra marmalade. However, I am not sure if they do it always (I would assume that they could as it's just the size of the jam you can get in the airplane) or they did it just because they knew that I am making YT video. Hi, they are both great. I would recommend visiting The Ritz. Savoy has more generous seating, so it feels a little bit less crowded and relaxing, but the Ritz it's still the top Afternoon Tea experience in London, in my opinion. Definitely the most glamorous. They have a very strict dress code. Men have to wear a jacket and tie, which might make it difficult for a holiday visit (although you can borrow it from the cloakroom), but it's well worth it. I am going there in two weeks again and will try to make a new video, so maybe you will be able to see it before you will book your visit.

Hi Rachel. It is a very traditional selection of sandwiches. Smoked salmon, chicken, ham, egg mayonnaise, cucumber, and chef’s seasonal savory which in my case was a mackerel. Hi Melanie, I wrote a blog post with the details about the Claridge's Afternoon Tea. You can find the link in the description below the video now. However, a long story short. There is no strict dress code mentioned on their website. A smart casual is alright, but people really like to dress up for these occasions. The price was £60 per person + 12.5% service charge, so £67.5. That was for the traditional afternoon tea. They do also festive and champagne afternoon teas which are £20-30 more expensive per person. Definitely give it go. Claridge's afternoon tea is in the top of my list. You will have a wonderful time.

@@thomaslowdon5510 Correction. The best people used to go to Claridge's. Now they go to the Ritz or the Goring. Claridge's has lost its special cachet. It used to be the place where European royalty and aristocracy stayed. It now markets itself to the rich American, Far East and Middle East clients. A three month waiting list doesn't prove it's where the best people go. It proves it's where everyone wants to go. It has become a tourist stop off.

@@ladolcevitauk1474 Absolutely agree with you. Claridge's used to be unique and fabulous, now it is just a very smart 5 star hotel. I know it's wrong to look back, but it was really something special until it was bought and modernised. It lost the almost indefinable qualities. I remember how it was from my childhood in the 1960s.

Do you have to book a table or just show up in the hotel and ask for it?

These high tea/afternoon tea eats look almost the same at all hotels in that price-range. Only the porcelain and rooms are exiting

Yes. The differences are subtle. It's mostly about atmosphere, scones, jams and pastries.

Hi Tanya, sorry for the late reply. I believed I replied on my mobile phone but it seems it got lost. It's a tough call. All the afternoon teas I tried so far were very good and had something unique about them. I will make a dedicated video explaining this, but until then I can say that Claridge's Afternoon tea is definitely in the top of my list.

    • @TimeToDessert
      @TimeToDessert  Před 6 lety +2

It's very difficult to say. They are both excellent. If you never experienced traditional afternoon tea then I would recommend you to go to the Ritz first. I think it's a little bit more glorious and richer experience for the tourist. However, if you prefer a little bit more casual and relaxed atmosphere then definitely Claridge's. Food wise they are both extraordinarily good.

@@TimeToDessert I agree. As someone who was a regular at Claridge's from my childhood in the 1960s until about 10 years ago, it is now very casual. Unfortunately, at least as far as I am concerned, it is has gone from being unique and magical to just another 5 star hotel. The clientele has certainly changed. I now use the Ritz or the Goring. Claridge's just seems too bright and flashy for a a traditional old man like me. Too many badly dressed and loud people.

How much is afternoon tea @ Claridge's 2024 prices? probably £80 per head. I can replicate all of this at home from M&S for around £12

The crockery appears decidedly thick walled, please correct me if I am wrong. Tea of this quality should be served in bone china only.
