    It's changed a lot over the years then - I worked very close by in the late 80s and my word were the shop assistants and floor walkers snobbish unless you were obviously wealthy. Terence Stamp used to have tea in the afternoons as his Club was just a little further along Piccadilly. I had no idea who he was at the time, but he was the most elegant and handsome man I'd ever seen at the time.

When it was designed by another unmentioned Royal & Presented to ERII, it was never to be over 50 pounds per person, 100 for two. Rising costs represent a mismanaged economy. Wonderful products & place, nonetheless.

    My grandfather, a Naval Officer and businessman, adored F&M, and he'd bring back hampers and goodies on his business trips, I was the only child for sure at my school who would eat caviar, foie gras and lava bread! He only liked elegant places, and I actually got to see it one day, not go in, in passing and it did look impressive. Inside in your video it looks lovely, and the tea rooms look as good as my beloved Betty's in Harrogate, (who have a beautiful Victorian style shop attached where you can buy what you eat in the tea room) it's what a proper tea rooms should look like, so after Covid it would be worth a visit, and to pick up some of those beautiful tea caddies.

    • @TimeToDessert
      @TimeToDessert  Před 5 lety +4

      Hi Melanie. Fortnum and Mason is a good choice! Actually, there is no bad choice! All afternoon teas I tried so far were very good. They all had food and teas of high quality and the professional and friendly staff (and pretty much the same prices). The biggest differences are in the atmosphere. Hotels (the Ritz, Claridge's) are generally more glamorous and formal while Fortnum's afternoon tea is a little bit more relaxed. So, it depends on what style you would rather experience. If you want to have a nice 'girls' time out with your mum, dress up, take photos in extravagant interiors then I would go for the hotel afternoon tea. But if you want something more casual (but still with great quality!) and maybe do some shopping afterward in the oldest department store in London (I sometimes buy their jams and teas as gifts) then Fortnum and Mason would be an excellent choice.

    • @mscott3918
      @mscott3918 Před 4 lety

      Avoid Claridge's. It is full of loud, badly dressed people. It just isn't what it was, and I can remember it as far back as the 1960s, when it was special. Try The Ritz, the Goring Hotel or, if you don't want to take out a mortgage, Patisserie Valerie. Fortnum and Mason is good, and again I remember how it was from the 1960s, before it was enlarged. Now a must have on the tourist trail.

      True. The noise level in London in restaurants is very high in general. In that sense the Afternoon Tea at the Claridge's was probably the best. The space there is quite big and tables are further apart. The Ritz is the worst. It has gazillion tables squeezed into a tiny space.

    If you cant go here in person, you can order many items online. I like their Russian Caravan Tea Bags, they work out at 22p each, add Traditional Hand Made in Ediinurgh
    Shortbread, at 55p each and you have a exceptional experience for 77p. Only slight issue, both are so good, I have 2 cups of tea and three bits of shortbread, so call it £2.09.
    Cup ot tea and a muffin in McDonald is £2.48, mass produced poor quality food with a muffin full of palm oil. Fortnem and Masons are perceived as being very expensive,
    but compared to others, they are not. Also, they deliver all over the world, so get ordering your gifts for Christmas and treat family and friends, they will be impressed!

    Forgive my ignorance: is clotted cream the same as butter?

    • @mscott3918
      @mscott3918 Před 4 lety +2

      No, it's made by heating milk in something like a bain marie. You let it cool, when thick lumps of cream called clouts come to the top. That's clotted cream. As for butter, that's cold churned.

      @TheRenaissanceman65 Thank you so much for your wisdom! Like most Americans, I associate tea with a simple cup of that soothing elixir, as opposed to "tea." I'm becoming increasingly fascinated by the ritual and iterations of tea.

      @TheRenaissanceman65 As opposed to dinner, tea is used. Interesting! A tiny word with so many connotations.
