Getting rare materials from the ground into your phone is ugly. The mining industry is responsible for air and water pollution and the destruction of entire landscapes. But what if we could replace the mining industry on Earth with a clean process that can’t harm anyone? Well, we can. All we need to do is look up.

05:30 bird explodes on impact of payload landing in the ocean. Albeit grisly, it's more dignified than drowning in a major oil spill, and I doubt these orbital landings will wipe out nearly as much wildlife as we do now with terrestrial operations.
to space we go!
The dead bird!!! T_T
lol definitely did a double take at that part. Jesus, the eyeballs!! Sadly I think virtually all industrial activities end up killing wildlife, even ones we consider "green" like wind turbines. Space hooks on the Moon ! ^^
“Going to space is expensive. Let’s do it right now”
so true
Sondadir yt
Because it is?
Actually the metals we get from space would become worthless from the amount we would have from large scale mining. The more platinum we have, the more common it is. Thus lowering the price. In a business standpoint, it would cost way more to mine than you would make. But in terms of human advancemen, it would be invaluable. Priceless even

It would be impossible to move and put an asteroid this size close to earth even if we wanted to
That's the one thing that makes me nervous. It only takes a slight miscalculation or a misfiring from the craft maneuvering the asteroid and the earth gets a big rock slamming into its face.
@@ommsterlitz1805 Nothing is impossible in space, between the absence of air friction, the orbital mechanisms, and so on, you could push an asteroid this big with a little probe, if you calculate right ^^
Krankar Volund yeah it might just take a while lol
Promising as it may sound, this could be extremely difficult to accomplish even with advanced technology. Most mining companies on earth are so rich and powerful, and they will not give up easily.
they will if they get more profit mining in space
This is where Crown corporations come in (similar to state owned companies in countries outside the Commonwealth). In Canada most of the major resource and infrastructure developers started as Crown corporations because no one other than the government was willing or able to take the risk. These are also usually organised on a not-for-profit basis where, depending on the charter authorising it, any potential profits either went to reducing cost, improving service, into government coffers, or sometimes into a "legacy fund" of some sort. (Many of these were privatised in the late 80's, with a rapid decline in services and increase in cost following. Ironically, many of these are major providers of essential services so in times of strife the government still has to bail it out anyway without having the benefit of reaping the profits in good times. Air Canada is one of these former Crown corporations that were privatised and has had to be bailed out on numerous occasions.) One notable exemption to a crown corporation being made to fill a gap is several telecom companies that were privately owned but wouldn't take on the cost to provide service to remote areas unless they were granted a chartered monopoly for a given area, thereby guaranteeing a return profit. And before someone says monopolies are inherently bad, the major difference is that these are chartered monopolies they come with conditions, regulatory oversight, and can be revoked. It is likely that the country which to achieve asteroid mining first will be China because they're organised essentially like a nation sized company.

Out in space there is LITERALLY an UNLIMITED amount of usable materials for us to gather. Not just in our solar system but in other systems too. With the countless stars in the galaxy and beyond we need only imagine what there is out there. All we need is some VERY smart people who can help us do these things and very advanced equipment to get the job done.

Me: I can't find my ph-
Kurzgesagt: *SPACE!*
So What!!!
SPACE!!!!
Indeed.
"Proby McProbeface" had me rolling
These videos are really cool, more space please
Kurzgesagt are:
-Intelligent
-Make the best explained videos ever
-Obsessed with the idea of aliens existing
-Constantly making videos on how humans can leap into a solar system civilization or more
They are CLEARLY a benevolent alien race that want to help us
Probably some kind of bird-like species of alien.

If your wood stove has an open fire, you have problems.
I literally have to set a fire in my living room once a while cuz I have a fungi infestation

Sacrifices have to be made tbh
This is why investing in space travel and "helping the Earth" aren't mutually exclusive.
So finally we can say intersection isn't a null set
Hyper cars tv only initially. Once a space station where parts can be moved around is established it’s basically game.
You have no idea how much I tried explaining that to people
It depends on what you mean by "helping the Earth". Helping poorer nations? Yes, it will help. Stopping climate change? Well, it's complicated. If there is a reasonable alternative - some current power holders will most likely switch, unless it is too expensive in the short term. But what is most likely is that current billionaires will just expand into space, while leaving the state of the earth production the same, reaping the monetary benefits from both.

I love this channel for this reason, (among others) they know the difference between science and science *fiction*

Suddenly the billionaires' space race is making more sense.
A serious comment finally.
Do you like Science and Tech?
People say that space is useless because it's just full of boring rocks.
But those rocks are valuable.
And billionaires want valuable things.

I would like to make aware a very important fact @Kurzgesagt, we've seen the impact of changing the waters dynamic is megastructures here on earth that can shift the Earths axis. Now we are talking about adding mass to the Earth with every trip, while slow at first both the Gravity and the Axis of the Earth based on the location and development of these new resources could very well cause major environmental and new planetary effects created by higher gravity due to an increased mass, changes in our magnetosphere, or even things we can't imagine wildly in active imagination.
Kurzgesagt should replace the government.

When its already one of the most hostile environments found anywhere mankind has been, I highly doubt anybody will care.
The only pollution I could imagine being a problem in space is orbital pollution. Having random bits of junk and debris flying around in random trajectories at hundreds of times the speed of sound
