I wish I'd seen this video about 15 years ago so I'd have been less concerned on a dive in Palau when my high pressure hose did the aquarium aerator behavior early in a dive. The divemaster wasn't concerned (he obviously knew more than I did) but I was massively distracted by what I imagined was going to be a catastrophic failure and potentially a dangerous loss of air situation. It wasn't until watching your video just now that I understood what happened. I'm very thankful you've taken the time to put together all these tech-tip videos to share with everyone.
Thanks for sharing your story and glad your a calmer diver after watching. Kevin had his dive computer explode (yes, the big bang) on a Cozumel dive. He was holding the HP hose as parts of his dive computer drifted to the sand, 20' below. He slowly goes down, picks up all the pieces and is slowly ascending to the horror of all the new divers watching. This happened after our video so he knew what happened and how long he had. Surfaced with 1800 psi to a shocked boat captain. Knowing makes you smarter Jim.

Hi Alec! My HP hoose brooke when I turned on the air and there was a really loud bang. Since I watched your video where you cut one I was totaly prepared, no panic. I just wanted to thank you for making me a more safer and prepared diver!

Thanks Alec! Well explained. Every 2 years I replace my hoses as assurance, I think it is good practice.
Manufacturers recommend that be done every 3-5 years but few dive stores tell their customers and most divers would consider a silly expense. Nope - it's a good idea. Alec

There is many good cheap , good expensive! The variety is crazy but I like to buy a light that does not also like to fill up with water ...

More great information. Thanks Alec. You go into detail which as we know is where the Devil is. I’ve seen the odd comment saying that these vids are too long, but that’s rubbish. Every video of yours I watch makes me a slightly better and safer diver (not to mention, influences my choice of gear ). Much appreciated from a U.K. diver.

Kevin keeps telling me to shorten up. He says our average watch time is 6 minutes but that includes the many viewers who watch 2 minutes and then decide to move on. I aim for 10 minutes but it obviously depends a bit on the topic. Try to explain the adiabatic temperature change that makes a regulator freeze even in warm water in less than 6 minutes!!
Plus I admit I do get going once I'm into a topic. I appreciate that you appreciate my efforts.
We hope to be back in the UK in the spring. Maybe I'll see you at Simply Scuba.

Hi Alec, hoses break rubber even steel braided. Used in past steel braided hydraulic break line on my street bikes. They work as designed. Fine Presentation 👍

Love it, thanks.. Any suggestion on how often one should change hoses, I have the mesg thingy hose to both my Apeks stages, but regular rubber hoses to my bcd and drysuit
Mesh QD (Quick Detach) hoses are cheap and easy to add. The QD end is almost universal. Your LDS should have them in stock or go to XSScuba.com . You'll be amazed what a difference it makes. You can also make the hoses longer or shorter at the same time if you need to. Alec

Great video again. I usually pull the hose protectors off, after rinding them with fresh water, since, from my experience, the water moisture trapped between the hoses protectors and the hoses, then to rot the hoses under them.
Absolutely correct Miguel! I spend more time cleaning the hose ends from under the hose protectors than I do servicing the entire rest of the regulator. Next time put a bit of silicon grease on your hand and then wipe the hose and hose end. It'll protect it and make it easier to slide back to rinse.

Thanks Alec. Yes I do this, with the silicone spray. Makes life easier, and I think the outside rubber likes it too.
do you need hose protector with the nylon hose ? there is no outside rubber to crack, but I suppose the inside might still bend harshly at the metal connection. That would solve the water and not drying issue....
I've not been putting hose protectors on the flex hoses. I didn't want to lose the flex benefit and they bend so easily that it's not likely they will crimp and tear at the metal ferrule. And, as you know, hose protectors trap water, corrode the metal ferrule and can soften the rubber unless rinsed a lot and greased. I don't know yet if there's a need for the hose protectors. If I see some coming in with frayed nylon at the fitting, I'll let you know. If you want hose protectors, get the nice soft ones from Oceanic. They will protect the hose but they're not stiff and very easy to pull back to rinse. Good luck guys. Alec

Hi Alec, could you do a video on the different bcd's: jacket, wing and hybrid please im looking to buy my first bcd and am interested in the wing and hybrid bladders but can't quite decide between them, im a drysuit diver and dive in the uk. Keep up the great work!

Is it possible that my high pressure hose doesn't have these small holes? I can't see them.
About your statement at the beginning of the video, I wouldn't blame the regulator's manufacturer for a failed hose, but I would be considered about their choice of the hose's manufacturer.
Would you consider making some maintenance videos? This time of the year is the end of diving season for many of us (north hemisphere...) and there is a lot of equipment cleaning, parts replacement and long term storing going on.
Also, could you share your opinion on inflator integrated alternate regulators?
Sometimes there is no choice. That is, scuba gear manufacturers are limited in their choice of parts suppliers, the same as car manufacturers. There's only 1 maker of air bags for example. However, depending on the model and where it was made (USA, Europe, Asia) there may not be holes in your HP hose. Also if it's an older one it may not have them. I plan on doing some service and maintenance videos. They are very popular. Thanks for watching.

recently, i heard someone mention the idea of single cylinder lp hose failure where you grab a heavy duty zip die, turn off your valve, cinch down the zip tie, turn valve back on, end dive.
i was curious if this is something you would test/had experience with.
Never work. Watch my video S13E06 Will Crimping A hose stop a Freeflow? I won't spoil the ending but forget the zip tie and end the dive.

Hoses are made by myflex mostly there are others. Same as on trucks air brake systems.
They are a great replacement for the old rubber hoses.
