  • Forefather's deeply evocative epic "When Our England Died" is a tribute to the last days of Anglo-Saxon England, a homage to the valiant Huscarls and Fyrd men who fought and fell in three crucial battles defending their homeland, that fateful Autumn of AD 1066...
    ______
    Lyrics:
Wearily to the last battle they strode
Onward through day and through night
To death they did go but they let them know
    The power of Angelisc might
Together they walked and together they'd fall
    Under the Autumn sky
With victory song behind shield-wall strong
They slashed and they battered with pride
Over river and stream and through forest and field
They marched with fire in their eyes
Wiping the sweat from their brows
For miles they had fared and no effort was spared
On the day when our England died...

I'm not sure how accurate this is, I'm by no means an expert, but here's a translation I made of this song into Anglo-Saxon.
Wēriglīc to þā beadu hie striden,
Forþweg þurh dæg and þurh niht,
To hire cwalu forþgan dyde hie
    Ac hie rǣdan heom on
    Ure Angelisces cbeft.
Eador gan hie, and eador slægen sceal hie,
    Under hærfestes heofon,
    Mid sigelēoþ under scildburg dyhtige
Hie geswenged and bēaten mid pryte.
Ofer ea and broc and þurh holt and feld
Hie gefēred mid fyr in hire eagan,
    Drȳgan swat frum hire bruwum.
For mīla gefēred hie, mid ne frofor oþer līþs,
On se dæg ure Anglaland deaged.
For the curious, here's how you can pronounce it:
(Any vowel with a line over it is pronounced slightly longer. "r" is trilled. "æ" sounds like A as in cat.
"Ayuh" is the best approximation I can think of for "ea", pronounce it as one sound.)
    wair-il-yee toh thāh bayuhdu hee-uh stri-duhn,
Forth-way thoorh dæy ahnd thoorh niht,
    Toh heer-ay qua-loo forth-gahn did-uh hee-ay
    Ahk hee-ay rǣd-ahn hay-ohm on
    Oo-ruh Ahn-ge-li-shes kbeft.
    Ayuh-dor gahn hee-ay, and ayuh-dor slæ-yuhn shayuhl hee-ay,
    Oon-der hær-vest-us hay-oh-vuhn,
    Mid si-yel-lāy-oth oon-der shild-boorg deeh-ti-yay
    Hee-ay ye-swing-ed ahnd bay-ahten mid pri-tay.
Ohver ayuh and broc and thoorh holt and feld
    Hee-yuh ye-fēr-ed mid fir in hee-ray ayuh-yen,
    Drī-yahn swaht froom hee-ray broo-woom.
    For mī-lah ye-fēr-ed hee-yuh, mid nay fro-for o-ther līths,
On say dæg oo-ruh Ahnglahlahnd dayuhyed.
    Thanks for the epic song!

Don't forget the Angles who gave their name to England which means Angle Man's Land! The Angles were the biggest people to settle here, they completely abandoned their home land which covered parts of Northern Germany and South Denmark. There is a peninsula in Northern Germany on the Baltic Sea called The Anglia Peninsula, that is where the true English came from! So the Saxons and the Jutes were tag alongs basically. As an Englishman I identify as an Angle when referring to The Anglo-Saxon tribes. Plus I come from Suffolk which along with Norfolk and parts of East Cambridgeshire form the Kingdom of East Anglia.

We have as much in common with the Norman invaders as with the Saxon defenders, and not only in terms of language. It's a past to be appreciated, but this was not the English vs the French, it was a conflict between two groups that both constitute modern English identity.

@@aetheldan But as I said, this is true for pretty much any nation on earth. There are still places that latch onto their past and no one has a problem but as soon as it is Anglos it is apparently not alright. Germanic anglo blood is still present in many English people and if people want to take pride in the thing that pretty much started modern English off there is no problem with that. If we want to be pedantic, normans were were originally from Scandinavian origin, many normans would have also had a germanic bloodline, however diluted throughout the years that they became french speaking folk. Also, it was found that Normans had hardly any genetic impact on the makeup of people today. Many more white British people have Anglo Germanic ties in their lineage so it wouldn't be wrong to want to explore that. If we are being pedantic and using your logic, pretty much no nation can celebrate their lineage from a similar time frame then.

Thanks for a well made music video! I learned something new about the history of England.
This historical event reminds me of the battle of Gotland in 1361. A Danish large force with hired Germanic warriors, led by King Waldermar Atterdag was far too overwhelming for Gotland's defense which consisted mostly of peasants. At first the Gotlanders managed to defend the island but gradually became far too small and at the last battle at the town of Visby the force consisted mostly of old men and far too young boys. They did not even have a chance, but they still resisted a superior force. It's honorable.
A lot has happened in the almost 700 years that have passed, but it will be too long to write here. Gotland has been a Swedish island for many hundreds of years, but I still see myself as a Gotlander.

Being a descendent of the Norman knight De Malin, plus a healthy mix of Anglo (Eden, Goodman) and Norman (Bragg, Fitzwilliam) names, I can say I see both sides of 1066. Its all very well to put the Anglo-Saxon world on a pedestal, but their successions were always a complete disaster, even by the standards of the time. This opened the way for Norman conquest and really may have been better in the long run for everyone. On the other hand, William didnt have to be such a bastard about things, and the class-conciousness it created is still haunting England today. Lets face it though, whether Anglo or Norman, the EU and mass migration is the real threat.

Normans have not disapeared. Some got assimilated in England it is true. What remains of them now?
Normandy itself , and millions of Canadians with a strong Norman lineage. The same boys who acquired a feared reputation as shocktroopers in WW1 ,brought Victory to the Allied with Vimy Ridge . The same boys who fought at Dieppe in 1942, the boys who ended up being the World Champs at D-Day . The ones who liberated Northern France, Northern Belgium, the Netherlands and overall, helped England to survive against the Axis Power. We are still well and alive. To be honest, England is not our priority anymore. We have much better countries to live in now 🇨🇦

Normans made England great, they laid ground work for the taking of Ireland and made the Scots recognise the Normans as Protectors of Scotland and paid tribute to the Normans. I doubt a Bunch of tribal infighting Saxons could of done that.

      What the?
The Anglo-Saxons were already a powerful tribe.
And to be honest, their history is far more interesting that the bland-boring filthy normans who invaded England.

  • @tannhasuervonhohenstein3728

Ahh the funny thing is.....for ye folk who think you're Anglo-Saxon or in anyway like them......the Anglo-Saxons are nothing like the English of the modern day.
We're not Anglo-Saxons. Their England and our England are different. Have been for centuries now.

The Anglo-Saxons didn't call themselves Anglo-Saxons, they called themselves "Englisc"
Of course our culture and language has changed, but we've been English for over a thousand years and England is one of the first and oldest nation states in the world.
They are our far ancestors now, but their blood still runs in us and they laid the foundations on which England was built. I won't forget them.
