- Some of you have waited a long time for this. I assure you, it's worth the wait. Make sure you watch the video till the very end or you might miss something.
Yes, it was sad to find out that my block was likely not going to work for me. Don't feel too bad though, I'm already working on the solution. All I can say is, the solution... well, maybe I won't say anything.

You are literally the only guy on CZcams that I can just sit for 45 minutes and watch an engine teardown and still want more
Sleeper dude and vice grips garage too
Good old saying, "Cheap, fast, reliable! Pick two!"
TANSTAAFL :D
Unless you get a 94-96 roadmaster LOL
Can't we all just agree that Eric's laugh when he put the turbo down on the bench was epic? POWER!!
I enjoyed the bit about the oil pump and distributor being driven off the same shaft - thanks for sharing that part!
Dude. You're incredible. I have watched you since the beginning! I'm a weekend warrior mechanic. I'd never attempt an engine rebuild but I always learn so much from you. I also appreciate your simple explanation and your compassion. Keep up the amazing work!
I was bummed once you found out about the damaged block, but you definitely raised the morale of the video with the TURBO surprise.... can't wait to see how this build comes out.... Good Luck Eric!
Constantly watching videos on car and in particular engine work, I plan to rebuild a car my self in the near future. And you and ChrisFix are by far the two best channels!
I enjoyed this video well done Eric! One thing I have always loved about your videos is you actually say the size of the bolts and you explain how things work together. I am no master mechanic or anything I have learned from my mistakes and I have learned from your videos thank you for doing what you do! Oh and hey that's a nice turbo when you go to install it you should go over clocking the turbo for the ease of the oil drain and what not!
The best ending to a video EVER, I cant wait for the rest of the series.Keep up the good work Eric.
I am living vicariously through you Eric with this build. I have had my Fairmont project (1981 Durango pickup) sitting in my side yard for nearly 5 years now waiting for me to start on it but life keeps getting in the way. I'm inspired to finally get this thing going (although I am going in a very slightly different direction by changing to fuel injection from a 1988-1993 Mustang). LETS DO THIS!
it is so difficult to stop watching your vids... I learned so much about cars, its parts, maintenance, etc from your channel even though I'm not "the car guy" like many others... now I'm able to maintain not only basic repairs on my car => not being ripped off anymore by cheap and fast mechanics - thank You Eric :)
Great vid and timely for me as well. Going to rebuild my 85 GT this winter. Engine is out of the car and sitting on a stand. I will be doing a tear down in the next week or two before dropping the block off at the machine shop. This video has given me a lot more confidence for my first tear down of an engine. Thanks!
These long videos are awesome...and so entertaining!
OH MY GOD THE TURBO AT THE END!!!!! IM SO HYPED RIGHT NOW
I love all the knowledge he provides and talks about how it works and why. Your channel has helped me so much.
As I have seen your personal progress, it occurs to me that you deserve your success, Thanks for sharing it with us.
i did a ground up rebuild on a 351 clevo with no prior mechanical training was rather easy really checked all the bearing tolerances all that needed doing when i was 25.
man did that thing fly left a turboed cordia sitting at 280kmh he told me the next day he was doing 280kmh and like a flash i went past him and disappeared the car was a very low 1973 xa superbird coupe and spin in all 4 gears till the cows come home wicked
Not only remove all parts from block to save machine shop labor but also, you won't get them back.
On my 302, I left the transmission alignment bushings in. Did not notice they were missing until I went to put the engine in. That was and unexpected delay as most auto prts stores were clueless on finding them.
You can tell how excited you are just watching this, there is a level of energy and excitement in the air!
best ending ever, to any ETCG video. love it! keep up the awesome work Eric! cannot wait to see the final assembly!
19:21 someone secretly placed a Go-Pro in the piston bore. There's where you're mis-firing came from lol
🤣🤣 There's all your problems hahaha 😆
literally was bummed till the last seconds and my face lit up! I'm so excited for this lol
Human error
I would just like to say, I really appreciate the videos you make. You're very informative. Seems like pretty much every video you're telling us some useful tip you've had to learn the hard way. You show the process of doing the entire job. You also put out long videos like this. Sure you could have broke this up into 10 minute videos ranging from part 1 to whatever for ad revenue, but you didn't. It's a pleasure to watch, learn, and be entertained by you. Thank you for this arsenal of mechanical information, Eric.
Thank you! I really appreciate that.
I love how your camera person films this. it’s amazing how you bring it in so ppl can see exactly what you’re talking about it’s super cool thanks 😊
Just an educated guess being that he didn't day , if the tight piston rod assembly come out of the cylinder with the pitting , the water that set in that cylinder to cause the pitting may have been in the cylinder when the engine was fired up . The resulting hydrolock could have bent the wrist pin . This would cause binding . The lack of cylinder ridge wear and cleanliness of the motor indicates that the motor wasn't run too much since the last build . If the motor was only bored .030' over you would still have .030' to bore out which might just clean up that pitting . you can always have the machine shop start with that cylinder to see . If it does clean up all the pitting continue with the rest if not get a new block . The nicks in the bottom of the cylinders most likely caused by the use of heavy duty rods and or rod bolts that weren't properly clearanced before assembly . The bottom end of the block can be notched properly and fix that . Of course you can use these problems as an excuse to get another core to build and get a 351 put those heads on . There is no replacement for displacement ! I once had a 1978 Camaro that I built a 385 cubic inch vortec motor for and finished it off with an air cleaner and value covers that said 5.0 l Vortec on them to add to the sleeper effect . but not much point in that with a turbo order the hood .
Damn good call, I just went back and watched it twice and can confirm that you're absolutely correct on the tight piston rod assembly coming from the cylinder with the pitting.
those years of ford 302 had a high nickel content in the block and most did not get much ridge even on engines with 150k miles and being a 302 they have thin castings and a .040 over bore is pushing it on most blocks
My first though seeing those notches was looks like where you're supposed to notch the block for a stroker crankshaft to clear the rod bolts.
that turbo laugh :D good closing on a video that ended up being an autopsy more that a tear down :P
See I clicked this expecting to see a quick engine tear down...what I got was a ton of questions I've had floating in my head answered. Love what you do Eric thank you
Happy to help. Thanks for the comment.
This is great ! I'm so excited to see how the Fairmont turns out.
that's how you drop a bomb shell at the end of a video :p
I was getting to the end going "What the hell are they talking about??" Oh shit.
katie_incredible
Guess I'll make me some popcorn at 5:20am
my day has gotten better i cant wait to see this build finished
BAM!...Turbo on the table > Insert "Evil" Laugh !Cant wait to see the remaining vids in regards to this build.
im sure a dozen people have told you this by now but you can have that bad cylinder sleeved, they will bore it way over then press a steel sleeve in then bore then bore the sleeve out to match the other bores, the gouges in the bottom of the cylinder walls is probably from someone installing a stroker crankshaft without clearencing the block so the rod bolts wouldnt hit it
I've already solved the problem with a new block. See my newsletter on 5.31 for details. www.ericthecarguy.com/blog
EricTheCarGuy: How's it running though? If that was a stroker crank, it might be damaged from the lack of clearance that caused all that damage to the bottoms of the cylinders and it might damage your new block. YIKES! Didn't know about strokers. This engine shit is rich!
i can tell your tone really changed when you found the damage I'm the bore
This video really helped me out My dad left me a 1968 cougar with a 302 engine inside im planning to rebuild it myself even though i have never done it before he was a mechanic for over 35 yrs, Its just something i have to get done trail and error i guess .... but this vid did help me alot thanks EricTheCarGuy
Why didn't u learn of your dad
Erick I’ve been watching you since CZcams first started and I found you. Got into cars cus of your vids, and my mustang, this now is just like icing on the cake.. since I love and only work on mustangs now thanks for your work.. cheers 🎊
The orientation of the connecting rod end caps is for the locks on the bearing, if you reverse them the bearings will spin. Modern engines use use fracture split sintered metal rods which work okay for normal applications, performance applications need forged rods.
Roller lifters can be moved around it is really pitting or other abnormal wear (as well as a failed hydraulic section) is what you should be concerned with. If you reuse them flush them with diesel and refill them with 40 wt.
As far as 2 bolt vs 4 bolt the LS engines have em beat with 6 bolt, better flowing heads, better cam design the weak point is their oil pumps and that stupid rubber plug at the end of the galley which can pop out and cause no oil pressure. I machine in an actual plug which those boys at GM should have done on day one.
What the hell did the last guy do to damage the engine like he did. But cool vid! Engine rebuilds/tear downs are always fun to watch.
Most enjoyable thanks Eric
On a side note, I used to own a 1974 Ford Fairmont with the 302 Windsor. Was a beast till I blew it up.
I hope I don't blow mine up. That would suck.
EricTheCarGuy Haha sure would :)
I have not visited your videos in a long time what a great video to jump back in with!
I saw that cylinder wall, and said, "Oh, that'st the pits."
Ba dum tss!
.
.
.
I KNEW that was a boost guage you were showing your pops!!!!
Watched the whole video and found the video, as well as the Eric, to be one of the best CZcams videos I have watched. Great job in describing what he is doing and explaining how it is done. I will definitely review other videos of his as my first choice when reviewing auto repair.
Hey great vid! Been awhile for me on any of this. Needed a great refresher like your video. Thanks for posting !!
That's a nice AC pump at the end
That was a better twist ending than any of the M. Night Shyamalan movies.
Finally got ta watch the vid. man im excited ta see were you may be going with this I 2 will soon be tearing in to my 302 full rebuild style what perfect time to do it
That is why I love engines! They are a work of art.
And good job with the video, not everyone can make me watch 45 min video with out skipping here and there!
TURBO....Holy crap really!!!!!
Yea, really. ;)
Good choice. Everything needs a turbo. And an LS1.
Wow! So does this mean you have to go to fuel injection? Add an ECM? Quite the project!
Think he said he's going with a blow-through carburetor setup
I knew the one of the gauges you were hiding was a boost gauge!
Fram, Rtv, and un even torque on bolts... I feel bad for that mustang..
Sounds like a ford owner to me! Hahah just kidding.
Haha
well, that "this could be the only oil filter this engine ever had" line won't work......
that crinkle-top Fram POS wasn't around @ the end of Ford 302 production in '96.
I feel sorry for the transmission. : (
The previous owner obviously rebuilt that engine and Eric is referring to the fact that it's probably the only filter it's had on there since the rebuilt .. I guess the aftermarket cam,.30 over pistons,gt40 heads, and custom oil pickup weren't enough of a hint ??
What does a transmission have to do with an oil filter?
The damage when you took the oil pan off could be from the connecting rods coming into contact with the inside of the block, this happens when you don't tighten the connecting rod caps and that can happen, hope that might've helped, love your show! Keep the good work up Eric
i just gt an 82 with the same motor in it for a grand this video was excellent and i fell ya on love working on old stuff so simple
Thank you for helping me find my bearings.
/lame dad puns
I didn't know bears wore rings!
great vid! I'm glad I didn't read the comments and spoil it for myself
Nice, I've been really excited about this build ever since the first time you talked about it.
I bag and tag everything and take lots of pictures and put descriptions with them if bolts are different lengths or it needs to go a certain way. Saved me so much time
All that performance and someone installed a "Fram" filter........I am depressed......
Fram=Junk ......the inside paper colapses.its like you dont run a filter.....
(Rolls eyes) oil filters have a job to filter the oil you can have a Fran oil filter like the orange can with a 5 thousand mile oil interval. In short it's an oil filter who gives a shir
The_Phantom
Had a nice small car, Probe GT with HLA (hydro lash adapters) Found out the hard way that Fram filters of any 'quality' did more harm then good. Sounded like nickels in a tin can. Swapped it out for a Napa Gold (made by WIX) and it settled right down and ran like a dream. Found out later that Fram's quality isn't as good as it used to be. Cheap parts used that will just get by. Check out any NAPA oil filter display where they do a cutaway of the same filter by different companies. It's an eye opener.
oil filter affects ur engine performance crappy oil filter crappy the the engine runs and filter bad oil
+Tedybear315 I have had no problems with Fram and have gotten no reason to get a different filter.
Damn, Dude, video ended too soon. Really enjoyed it...........
This brings back great memories. My brother and I rebuilt a Ford 351 in high school. It ended up going back into the old Econoline Van we had. Funny thing is it was the same color as the Ford this engine came out of. I'd love to go back to wrenching/rebuilding engines like this again.
This was a cool video. I would like to see a budget build series in the future. Keep them coming!
What about resleeving the block Eric?
We've been duped! I am sure you had other plans all along. Based on what you have done so far, I could not fathom you using that POS engine in any way. Look forward to the new stuff.
Damn you, Eric! You kept the turbo from me- and I love you for it.
This guy just saved me some money. Now all I have to do is take my block and heads to the machine shop. Thanks Eric.
38:47 "WEEEEEEEEEEE!!" this guy is epic
You're the Bob Ross of Auto Repair
We can see that you were having fun doing this video. You looked happy.
Nice video Eric, keep on going and staying dirty :)
I really like the direction your videos are going - I enjoy watching stuff get built. I hope to see a video of you at the track when your done!
Me too. It would be nice to see what it does compared to when I took it there stock. czcams.com/video/hkOdD0P38ps/video.html
dat ending laugh... :O
ETTCG = EricTheTurboCarGuy
Not the greatest idea on a stock 5.0 block. The block webbing cracks pretty much no matter what you do if you run it above around 500hp. 450 is still pushing it but it can last a while if you're lucky. Not very strong blocks unfortunately.
hellloooo that block is not going to stay stock. In fact it is not certain that he is going to use that block. have you seen the pitting on cylnder wall, awfull
Changing parts inside the block doesn't change the block. It's still stock.
Sprint316 stock block is generally referred as stock internals crankshaft rods pistons etc
he already built an entirely new motor
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ERIC🙏🏼😇🌅😎I personally have been known to not get back to a particular project for a little while and have also forgotten where specific bolts go.. now I draw the part on card board and put the bolts in the picture where they go on the real part of the pay stays on the engine or car😉
So excited about this! I've got a 302 I've been wanting to play with.
Eric the car guy is doing mod tuner stuff cool
Now it just needs a wing that goes past the roof and beyond the side mirrors haha
+thomas smith rice
+Back Seat Garage nah
Pwerd by ferd.
I like Ford. They made some really good shit. Some really bad shit as well.
Regardless this made me laugh so +1.
?
first on race day, later found on road dead
lol
This project is great, nice work Eric as always
Awesome Eric!!! Nice twist with the turbo ☺ /with love from Sweden.
you turbo trickster man I'm excited for you lucky sob
Right?
Are you going to run the whole ON3 kit? I can't speak for them on the push rod stuff but I have their kit with a few upgrades on my '07 GT. I am very pleased. We went 6.90s at 6#s on a complete stock 3v drive train. Now we are getting the car ready for round 2. 10.5:1 comp and a lot more boost with e85. Shooting for 6.0s
Yes I am using the whole kit. Thanks for the input. I don't think I'll be running 6's though. :)
+EricTheCarGuy he's probably talking in the 1/8th
If that's the case I might have a shot at that.
looks like someone tried putting in a stroker and didn't check clearences and probably didn't degree their cams thus pistons meet valve
A stroked crank would also explain block damage (improper clearance relief) on the oil pan side.
John Panyon I don't know. I've seen plenty of Windsor blocks with those notches at the bottom of the cylinders. The 351 I've got right now has them and there were no signs of fretting, crank walk or any other clearance issues. It was a stock engine.
I thought the same thing until I hit Google with bare 351 W block search and there it was with the notches in the same spots.
Bagging and tagging WORKS. The first time I did it was the first time I remember not having parts left over on a huge project that wasn't my own.
Edit: I never had stuff left over once I started working as a tech professionally. But I always had stuff left over at home up until that point. But that's about the time I started taking inventory and making sure I did things correctly as well as b&t bolts and nuts.
The ending made me happy, cant wait to see the rest of the build!
Going with EFI or blowthrough carb setup?
Blowthrough.
I wish you luck- that will require some patience to get right. Blowthrough can work just fine though- basically it's just like any other carb (with some extra gimmicks of course), with the biggest difficulty being it's in a high pressure feed- so it's harder to just rip of the air filter and look inside to see what's not working right.
Rule number one of rebuilding your engine: Make sure you can afford a turn-key crate engine before you decide to rebuild your current engine.
well $32,000 for a complete hellcat turn key pallet vs a $250 used engine gamble.
The turbo made me smile...good luck Eric!
AHHHHHHH CHOO CHOO!!!!!! I am 20 times more excited for this build after the end there. CAN'T WAIT!
So much rtv.... Why oh why...
Right?
Excuse me language.... Fukkkk yeh eric!!
Awesome video!! Reminds me of when I removed and tore down my 289 from my 1966 Fairlane. It's been about 2 years that I rebuilt it and is still running strong!
Did a compression test ?
This is like the soap opera of cars and the drama is getting good.. Eric the turbo guy lol
If you really want to piss off people, get a turbocharged Honda V6, stick it in that Fairmont and put a few Type R stickers on it. And then watch a tsunami of butthurt roll in.
Ironic I am building a twin turbo J series engine with ITBs for my Accord, I'll post videos if anyone is interested
Ya post some vids
it probably would do pretty good too
It turned out to be way slower than a Golf GTI.
sweet, hope you are going EFI too...
Nope. Carb is better. Cools the charge going in.
yea eff efi
EricTheCarGuy Carb is most definitely not better. A tiny bit cooler charge is nothing compared to terrible mixture control. Do it right the first time Eric.
I am doing it right. Just because I don't agree with you, doesn't mean I'm wrong.
+EricTheCarGuy carb is also cheaper and easier to tune and upgrade.
I've been looking for a water pump bolt diagram for YEARS thanks eric! Jegs for the win!
Great quality video (both video quality, and the in depth explanations). This is the kind of thing I want/need to see, I really want to get a car/engine to work on, but having no background/previous experience, these are so helpful, sincere thanks.
And additional thanks for showing things like what can happen if you over-torque, and why some of these engine pieces/mods are valuable additions/investments, and the effect they have on performance.
why would anyone dislike the video
Jealously.
+EricTheCarGuy I concur
Yeah they should make you give a reason when you click on that , i swear there is just a person who runs around and clicks it for some odd reason ..
the chevy, mopar, jdm, and euro guys
lol. old owner put all that work into engine then puts a cheap fram filter on.
Lol, yeah. Well it wasn't a lot of work or at least "good" work. Anyway the filter. I used those for a while up until I saw a few videos of them being dissected and the piss poor material inside. My main reason for choosing it was the material on the end making it a bit easier to grip. If better filters had that on it or something similar I am sure they would sell more.
ran out of money maybe or know the block was probably not going to last and roadkilled it
tribulation138 Fram filters are the BEST!
Fram = fucks running awesome motors
Should've used Motorcraft
I'm ready for the ford 302 engine for my shelby charges and this video helps and a lot since I buy the parts in the USA thank you very much
Thanks for the harmonic balancer lesson, makes perfect sense now. Sorry about your cylinder misfortune.
I KNEW IT! CHOO CHOO!
Hey Eric. Forget that Ford engine. Throw a Subaru engine in it. Go Jap!
Nah. Just kidding.
the Ford V4?
+gbowne1 H4... but who really cares right?
+SS troll alert 😂😂
What gave that away? Its username is SS.
Why after watching this video I now feel that I'm now informed to do a complete tear down with only a diy mentality. No seariously, I got to watch your video about five or so times, take notes and study up and I think I'll be ready. I owned a 89 and 91 f150 plus my girl friend's 95 camaro(witch wont let me touch until she see me do minds). This vid will help me save thousands. Thanks...
That was a great video, thank you. For some reason your engine vids are my favorite!
Eric, that "find your bearings" joke was an official Dad Joke.
Not only am I a dad, but also a grandpa. I think that qualifies me to make the joke. ;)
